Tokyo Sexwale Life

Mosima Gabriel "Tokyo" Sexwale (Venda) (born 5 March 1953) is a South African businessman, politician, anti-apartheid activist, and former political prisoner. Sexwale was detained on Robben Island for his anti-apartheid works, as well as Nelson Mandela. Sexwale became Gauteng Province's Premier after the 1994 general election, the first truly democratic election in South Africa. He served as Minister of Human Settlements in South Africa from 2009 to 2013.

Early life and education

Sexwale was born in Soweto's township of Orlando West. In World War II, his father was a clerk at Johannesburg General Hospital and had fought against the Germans. Sexwale grew up in the midst of the black township's upheaval, and he graduated from Orlando West High School in 1973.

Sexwale joined the Black Consciousness Movement in the late 1960s and became a local spokesperson for the radical South African Students' Movement. He joined Umkhonto we Sizwe, Africa's armed wing, in the early 1970s ("spear of the nation"). He obtained a Certificate in Business Studies at the University of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland while in Swaziland. Sexwale went into exile in 1975, where he concentrated on military engineering.

Personal life

"Tokyo" derives from his time as a youth, and it comes from his love for the sport of karate.

Sexwale's two children by a first husband and two children by his second wife, Judy van Vuuren, a paralegal he encountered in Robben Island jail, are in danger. Following his financial prosperity, he and his family migrated into Illovo, a predominantly white suburb. Sexwale and his second wife filed for divorce in 2013.

"His technique was that of solving a society's most impractical problems by speaking and participating" three days after Mandela's death on December 8, 2013, where he praised him as the "purest of the purest good" and encouraged everyone to learn from his example: "His technique was that of solving a society's most impractical problem by speaking and engaging."

Tokyo Sexwale Career

Political career

Sexwale returned to Johannesburg, where he worked as the head of the African National Congress Headquarters' public relations staff. He was later named the head of special programs, reporting to the ANC's military headquarters. He was elected as a member of the executive committee of the ANC in the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (PWV) zone in September 1990. In 1991, he assumed the role of chairperson of the ANC in the PWV area, which he held until his resignation in late 1997.

Sexwale was elected first premier of the new PWV Province in April 1994 following the South African elections (renamed Gauteng Province in December 1994). He was credited with restoring stability to several political townships in this capacity. In 1998, Sexwale left politics for the corporate sector. The reasons for this were never made completely clear, but it was believed that central government limits were hindered as well as internal African National Congress intrigues. Sexwale has departed politics due to deep differences with Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's then Vice President. According to another theory, his marriage opened business opportunities in the white-dominated financial markets, which provided him with opportunities that weren't open to other black leaders. After Mandela resigned, Sexwale, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Mbeki were among the potential candidates vying for the presidency. Thabo Mbeki was once the most popular candidate, but Sexwale and Ramaphosa left politics to pursue successful careers as businessmen.

Sexwale's campaign for a leadership role within the ANC, according to The Sunday Times, putting him in a position to replace Thabo Mbeki as President of South Africa in 2009. On BBC's Hard Talk, Sexwale said that if asked to run for the presidency as a party president by the ANC's systems, he would seriously consider it. With 2,198 votes, he was elected to the ANC's 80-member National Executive Committee in December 2007.

President Jacob Zuma appointed Sexwale as Minister of Human Settlements, a ministry that had previously replaced the Department of Housing.

Sexwale founded Mvelaphanda Holdings (mvelaphanda is the Venda word for "progress"), a company of which he is also executive chairman, after leaving the public sector. Mvelaphanda's primary focus is concentrated on the mining, oil, and related industries. Sexwale's most important concerns are oil and diamond mining, for which he has received waivers from Africa and Russia; Mvelaphanda Resources, which is owned by Mvelaphanda Holdings, which is chairman, is responsible for these interests.

Sexwale, a partner of Mvelaphanda Group, has substantial stakes in the mining industry. He is currently discussing a proposal to purchase mining interests in Guinea with the Kazakh-owned Eurasian National Resources Corporation. A negotiation team is in secrecy over the acquisition of a local mining company that would be controlled by the Guinean state.

The latest mining law, which was drafted by consultants to Guinean President Alpha Condé, would give the new state entity a 15 percent stake in Guinea's mining projects, as well as the ability to buy another 20%. Even before Condé became president, Tokyo Sexwale was a business partner with Alpha Condé.

Mvelphanda Holdings and Walter Hennig's Palladino Holdings have formed an African Global Capital, a natural resources investment fund focusing on the continent.

OZ Management, Mvelaphanda (Mvela) Holdings, and Walter Hennig's Palladino Holdings announced the establishment of Africa Management Limited, a new joint venture. Africa Management Limited was established as part of the joint venture as a catalyst for investment in both private and public markets across Africa, focusing on natural resources and related opportunities. "We intend to expand our already strong foothold in African investments in partnership with Och-Ziff," Tokyo Sexwale said. We hope that the African Global Capital partnership with Och-Ziff will assist in the establishment of Africa's largest investment company."
