Lincoln Davenport Chafee (born March 26, 1953) is an American politician from Rhode Island.

He was mayor of Warwick from 1993 to 1999, and the 74th Governor of Rhode Island from 2011 to 2015.

He served as a member of the Democratic Party from 2013 to 2019, and in June 2019, The Boston Globe announced that he had been a registered Libertarian since being a Republican and then an independent in the interim, and then a Democrat. The son of Republican politician John Chafee, the 66th Governor of Rhode Island, the United States Secretary of the Navy, and a U.S. diplomat. Senator Lincoln Chafee's first elected office served as a Warwick City Council member in 1985.

Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Almond appointed Lincoln Chafee to fill his father's seat in the Senate, which he won in a full term in 2000 as the Republican nominee after John Chafee died in 1999 while serving in the United States Senate. In the run-up to the Iraq War, Chafee was the only Republican in the Senate to vote against authorizing the use of force in Iraq.

Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse defeated him in his reelection bid in 2006.

Chafee subsequently redirected his vote to the Democratic Party by first endorsing Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race, then running as an outsider for Governor of Rhode Island in 2010, and then officially joining the Democratic Party in May 2013.

He wanted to run as the Democratic Party nominee in the 2016 presidential election in 2015, but he delayed until the primaries and later supported Hillary Clinton.

In 2019, Chafee expressed interest in running in the Libertarian primary for President in the 2020 election.

Personal life

Chafee and his partner, Stephanie Birney (Danforth) Chafee, were married in January 1990. They have three children, Louisa, Caleb, and Thea. Louisa qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in sailing. He is a member of The Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. He lives in Teton Village, Wyoming, as of 2019.

Early life, education and career

Lincoln Davenport Chafee was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 26, 1953, the son of Virginia (née Coates) and John Chafee. Henry Lippitt, Chafee's great-grandfather, was Governor of Rhode Island. Rhode Island Governor Charles Warren Lippitt and Senator Henry Frederick Lippitt are among his great-uncles. Zechariah Chafee, his great-uncle, was a Harvard law professor and a leading civil libertarian. The Chafee family was one of the first settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts, before heading south to Rhode Island.

He attended public schools in Warwick, Rhode Island, Providence Country Day School, and later, Phillips Academy. Chafee captained the Brown University wrestling team and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in classics in 1975. He then attended Montana State University's non-degree Farrier School (a sixteen-week horseshoeing program) in Bozeman. He spent seven years as a farrier at harness racetracks in the United States and Canada. At Northlands Park in Edmonton, Alberta, one of the horses he shod, Overburden, set the track record. Chafee explained how his time as a farrier affected him, saying, "You tend to be a quieter person" when you're around horses.
