Tara was born to author and playwright Partap Sharma and British writer and writer Susan Sharma. She attended Bombay International School and the United World College of the Adriatic, Italy. She earned her B.Sc. in Management at the London School of Economics later.

In November 2007, she married media entrepreneur Roopak Saluja. Zen and Kai are the couple's two children.
Career
Sharma, a LSE graduate, worked as a financial consultant for Citibank and Accenture. She appeared in advertisements for Lakme, Garnier, Liril, and Pepsi, the latter of which included a commercial starring Shah Rukh Khan that was a stepping stone to films.
