Josh Gates (born August 10, 1977) is an American television presenter, television producer, and author.

He was the host and co-executive producer of Destination Truth and Stranded on Syfy, and he now hosts and co-executive produces the Travel Channel series Expedition Unknown and also Legendary Locations.

In addition, he is the host of multiple live specials for, as well as a guest investigator on, the television series Ghost Hunters and its spin-off Ghost Hunters International.

Through his production firm Ping Pong Productions, he produces the related Ghost Nation series and other paranormal television shows.

Personal life

Gates was born in Manchester-by-Sea, Massachusetts, to Lee and Sonia Gates, and now lives in Los Angeles, California. He studied at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, co-majoring in archeology and drama.

Hallie Gnatovich, a co-star of Destination Truth, was married in 2014. They have two children. Hallie Gnatovich revealed on Instagram in August 2021 that the couple had been separated for about a year and a half, and that their divorce was finalized on July 13, 2021.

Career

Gates was the host of Destination Truth on Syfy from 2007 to 2012. The series debuted its second season with its best-ever telecast, with 1.7 million viewers and the show's highest-rated second season appearance on Syfy. After the fifth season, the show was over.

Gates visited Walt Disney World in Florida in 2008 to speak with Joe Rohde, Executive Designer of Walt Disney Imagineering. During a Destination Truth episode, Gates introduced Rohde with a cast of the "Yeti" footprint. The cast members are on display at Expedition Everest, a Himalayan-themed, high-speed, coaster-like attraction where visitors can meet a Yeti face to face.

Destination Truth episodes were on television as of May 2017.

Gates hosted eight live specials for the television show Ghost Hunters and its spin-off Ghost Hunters International (1 episode). On four episodes, he appeared as a guest investigator. Jason Hawes, Steve Gonsalves, and Dave Tango appear in the related Ghost Nation film.

Gates hosted the Ghost Hunters Live Halloween special in 2007, and he appeared on the mid-season finale episode of Ghost Hunters International in 2008.

In 2008, he returned to host Ghost Hunters Live, where he helmed the live broadcast from Ft. Delaware, a civil war POW camp in Delaware Bay. Both seasons received high ratings and 2008's special made Syfy the nation's biggest television network on prime time on Halloween night. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, Gates appeared on the Ghost Hunters Live Halloween specials.

The Ghost Hunters Live 100th episode special from the stage of Saturday Night Live in 30 Rockefeller Center, during which the TAPS team investigated Alcatraz Prison.

In 2007 ("Revelations") and 2008 ("All Access") Gates conducted two round-table interviews with Ghost Hunters. Gates returned as guest investigator on a 2009 episode wherein Essex County Penitentiary was investigated, a 2011 episode in whichin Hammond Castle was investigated, and a 2013 episode wherein Mission San Juan Capistrano was investigated.

After starting with Travel Channel, which premiered in January 2015 and is now the host and executive producer of Expedition Unknown on Discovery Channel, Gates has been in its eighth season as of October 2020.

In 2020, a COVID-19 pandemic at-home version of the show was created to last the season and increase network airtime, called Josh Gates Tonight, in which Gates spoke to guests about travel and life.

Expedition: Back to the Future, a four-part special of Expedition: Unknown was created in 2021. Gates and actor Christopher Lloyd set out to search for six other DeLeorean Time Machines that were used in the production of the Back to the Future films with the intention of donating it to The Michael J. To raise funds for Parkinson's disease research, the Fox Foundation will sell off at auction.

Josh Gates appeared on Beg, Borrow & Deal, a reality/game show on ESPN in 2002.

Gates has appeared in a number of television commercials, including Coke and Ozark Trail, since relocating to Los Angeles. As part of a Publicis New York and BMW USA campaign, he appeared in a national commercial for BMW. Gates has appeared in commercials for EA Sports video games, Dish Network, and Stanley Tools.

Gates also works as a voice-over artist and can be heard as the narrator of Time Warner's audiobook A Brother's Journey, a biography by Richard B. Pelzer. The Earphones Award from Audiofile Magazine honors outstanding audio presentations that excel in narrative voice and style, vocal characterizations, appropriateness for the audio version, and text enhancements.

Gates premiered "Expedition X" in February 2020, where fellow paranormal investigator Jessica Chobot and scientist Phil Torres investigate paranormal findings and other unethical phenomena.

Gates premiered "Josh Gates Tonight" in April 2020, where he videoconferenced guests from around the world, including those previously featured on Expedition: Unknown, and travel and adventure figures. Due to the interruption of productions triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest show was created to fill airtime, and it could be filmed while isolated during lockdown and travel restrictions.
