Takefusa Kubo Career

Club career

Takefusa Kubo, a local team headquartered in his hometown Kawasaki, started playing football at the age of seven. In August 2009, he was named MVP at FC Barcelona Soccer Camp, in which he played at the age of eight. He was selected as a member of FC Barcelona School's team in April 2010 and represented him in the Sodexo European Rusa Cup held in Belgium. Despite finishing third, he was named MVP. After returning home, he began to play for the Kawasaki Frontale junior youth team.

After failing the hearing, Takefusa Kubo was allowed to join FC Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia. He began playing for Barca Alev C (U11). He was the top goalscorer in the league during his first full season (2012–13) with 74 goals in 30 games. He was promoted to Barca Infantil A (U14) in his third full season (2014-2015). The Spanish club was later found to have broken FIFA's international transfer policy for under-18 youngsters, effectively excluding Kubo from playing for the club. He returned to Japan in March 2015 in the hopes of playing time after joining FC Tokyo's junior youth team.

Takefusa Kubo joined FC Tokyo U-18 in 2016. He was promoted to the senior team in September 2016 at the age of fifteen. He made his official debut for the reserve team in the J3 League on November 5th as a halftime sub for the match against AC Nagano Parceiro. He made his J.League debut at 15 years, five months, and a day.

In a 1–0 victory over Cerezo U-23 on April 15, Kubo became the youngest player to score in the J.League for the first time in 15 years, ten months. In a 1–0 victory over Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, top-flight debuted for the first team in J.League Levain Cup, playing 25 minutes for the first time on May 3rd. FC Tokyo announced an extension to Kubo's deal, naming him as a first-team member in November 2017.

He joined Yokohama F. Marinos on a half-year loan on August 16, 2018. In an away game against Vissel Kobe, he scored on his first appearance with Marinos.

Kubo was a regular starter for FC Tokyo in both the J.League Levain Cup and J.League scoring competitions from the start of the 2019 season.

Kubo joined Real Madrid, Spain, on a five-year contract on June 14, 2019. Despite being signed to the U-19 squad, he was expected to predominantly play for Real Madrid B during the 2019–20 season. However, he played with the first team on Real Madrid's preseason tour of the United States and Germany.

Kubo joined RCD Mallorca on a season-long loan on August 22, 2019. After Yoshito Okubo and Akihiro Ienaga, he has become Mallorca's third best player in history. He made his La Liga debut on September 1st in a 2–0 loss to Valencia. He was the youngest Japanese player to play in a match in the Top 4 European leagues history for 18 years, 2 months, and 28 days. In a 3–1 win over Villarreal on November 10, he scored his first goal on October 10, 2019. He scored his second goal in an exciting 3–3 draw to Real Betis on February 21, 2020. In a 2–1 victory over SD Eibar two weeks later, he scored his third goal in a 2–1 victory.

He was loaned to Villarreal CF until the end of the 2020–21 season on August 10, 2020. His loan was shortened on January 8, 2021, despite being mainly used as a substitute.

Kubo moved to Getafe CF on loan for the remainder of the season right after leaving Villarreal.

Kubo returned to RCD Mallorca on a season-long loan on August 12, 2021.

Kubo joined Real Sociedad on a permanent basis on July 19, 2022. Kubo scored his first goal in a 1–0 victory over Cádiz in La Liga's first game of the season.

International career

Kubo has been active in Japanese national teams from U-15 to senior level. He was selected to the Japan U-20 national team for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup at the age of fifteen.

Kubo was called in the squad for the 2019 Copa América, his first call up to the senior squad, just shy of turning eighteen. He made his debut against El Salvador as a 67th-minute replacement for Takumi Minamino on June 9, 2019. He was drafted in the 22-player squad of the Under-23 team for the 2020 Summer Olympics in July 2021.
