Gabriel Martinelli Career

Club career

Martinelli, who was born in Guarulhos, S.o., began his career in 2010 and spent for Corinthians' futsal team. He moved to Ituano in 2015 after making the breakthrough in football fields and having subsequent trials at Manchester United and Barcelona.

Martinelli signed his first professional deal until October 2022 on November 4, 2017. In a 2–1 Campeonato Paulista away victory over S. Bento, he made his professional debut on March 17th, winning as a late replacement for goalscorer Claudinho; he was the youngest player to play for the team in the century at the age of 16 years and nine months.

Martinelli scored his first senior goal in a 4–1 win over Tabo da Serra in the year's Copa Paulista. Definitively signed to the first team for the 2019 Campeonato Paulista, scoring six goals during the tournament, making him the club's top goalscorer when the club advanced to the quarterfinals; highlights include a brace against Bragantino on March 15, 2019.

Martinelli had been linked to a number of clubs, but he signed a long-term deal with Arsenal in July 2019, despite a reported fee of £6 million (R$46.9 million). Martinelli, who held an Italian passport, was not subjected to the rigorous criteria that was not mandated for English clubs to recruit South American players. He joined the Arsenal first team for their pre-season tour in the United States. In a 3–0 pre-season victory over Colorado Rapids on July 16, he scored on his non-competitive debut. Martinelli's original intention was for him to play for the reserve squad and academy in his first season, and then be seamlessly integrated from Hale End to the first-team setup later in his career. However, Martinelli's stellar pre-season and high success in training aided Arsenal that he is set to join Arsenal as soon as first-team integration is ready.

Martinelli scored 1–0 over Newcastle United in August 9, 2019 in his first Premier League appearance, a replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 84th minute. Martinelli scored a brace in his first competitive appearance for the club in a 5–0 win over Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup on September 24. "He's eager to have the opportunity to help us," head coach Unai Emery said, "he's eager to have the opportunity to help us." He fights for our cause. I told him to have some patience for his chance to do what he was doing. He did it. He deserved it."

Martinelli made his second appearance for Arsenal in a 4–0 home victory over Standard Liège in the UEFA Europa League on October 4th, in which he scored another brace. Martinelli maintained his goal scoring form by netting the equalizer in a 3–2 home win over Vitória Guimares on October 24th with another header. Martinelli scored another brace in a 5–5 draw with Liverpool on October 30th, as well as his penalty in the penalty shootout, which Arsenal then lost. As a result, he became the first player to score four times in his first four starts since Ian Wright. Martinelli's results were lauded by Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who described him as "the greatest" talent of the century.

Martinelli's performances culminated in him being named 'Player of the Month' for October, receiving 75% of the total vote cast, beating out Mattéo Guendouzi and Nicolas Pépé. Martinelli started his first Premier League game after being named interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg, scoring Arsenal's equalizer in an eventual 1–3 victory over West Ham United on December 9th. Martinelli scored in a 2–2 away draw at Chelsea on January 21, making him the first youth to reach double figures in a season for Arsenal since Nicolas Anelka. Arsenal's supporters named the goal as Arsenal's Goal of the Season later this season.

Martinelli signed a new four-year deal on July 3rd, with a team option for an additional year until 2025. Martinelli was ruled out before the end of 2020 and underwent surgery to repair a lesion in his knee cartilage following an injury in preparation on June 21. In a 2–1 away loss to Everton, he made his return on December 19th, coming off the bench to play 19 minutes. He sustained a minor ankle injury during the FA Cup warmup match against Newcastle United on January 9th, 2021, and Reiss Nelson was recalled in the squad. Martinelli returned to European competition on Sunday, making a 13-minute cameo appearance off the bench in a 1–1 draw against Benfica. In a 3–0 away victory over Sheffield United on April 11, he scored his first goal of the season.

On November 27, Martinelli scored his first goal (a volley with his second touch of the game) of the 2021–22 season against Newcastle United. Eventually, this goal of his was ranked third in the official Goal of the Season poll released by the club at the end of the season.

He scored twice against Leeds United three days later on December 18th, his first Premier League brace, scoring Arsenal's 7,000th goals in top-division English football. Martinelli was sent off for two yellow cards against Wolves on February 10th. It was his first red card in his career. In one passage of play, the red card sparked some controversy because he was given two yellow cards.

Martinelli scored for Arsenal in their 2–0 away victory at Crystal Palace on August 5, becoming the first Brazilian to score a season-opening goal in a Premier League season.

International career

Martinelli was born in Brazil and of Italian descent through his father; he holds dual Brazilian-Italian citizenship. Martinelli was called up by Brazil's national team manager Tite to complete preparations for the 2019 Copa América on May 20. Martinelli appeared on Brazil's under-23 side at the United International Football Festival in Spain in November 2019.

Martinelli was named in the Brazil squad for the 2020 Summer Olympics on July 2nd, 2021. Martinelli scored Brazil's second penalty to help defeat Mexico in the Olympic semi-finals on August 3rd, before becoming a gold medalist after Brazil defeated Spain in the final four days.

He was selected in the 25-man senior Brazil squad against Chile and Bolivia on March 11, 2022. Martinelli made his international debut when he came off the bench for Vincius Jnior's victory over Chile 4-1 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio del Maracana Stadium.

Tottenham and Arsenal 'set to battle it out to sign Raphinha in the summer'... with Saudi Arabian clubs 'also interested in the Brazil star' amid uncertainty over his Barcelona future

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 21, 2024
Tottenham and Arsenal could reportedly battle it out to sign Barcelona winger Raphinha this summer. The Barcelona winger's future at the club is uncertain due to the club's financial situation as well as the fact that he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot. This season, he has started just 12 out of his 21 LaLiga appearances, netting four goals and registering seven assists.

Now it's NOT like watching Brazil! Pele, Zico and Ronaldo stirred the blood when they came to town but this feels like a poor vintage, writes MATT BARLOW

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 19, 2024
MATT BARLOW: Brazil's new beginning broke in leafy Hertfordshire with Dorival Junior, their third boss since the World Cup in Qatar, gathering his squad for the first time and hammering home the message about what they represent and what their target must be. They are five times world champions and, despite a dreadful start to the qualifying campaign and more than a year of leaderless drift, nothing other than striking gold once again in the United States in 2026 will do, Dorival told his players. Staring back at the 61-year-old was a room full of talented footballers. Two young Real Madrid forwards in Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, and Endrick, the exciting Palmeiras teenager who will move to the Bernabeu Stadium when he turns 18, in July.

Why Brazil's stars love playing in the Premier League - and do YOU recognise the first player from the country to move to the top flight?

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 19, 2024
JOSUE SEIXAS: One of the first moves of Dorival Júnior when appointed Brazil's head coach was to plan a trip to England. Over the space of a week or so in February, he attended five games and visited the training centres of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Fulham, where he spoke to fellow coaches. And, when the time arrived to select his first squad, for friendlies against England, on Saturday, and Spain, three days later, Dorival named 10 players from the Premier League.
