Sterling Clay Shepard (born February 10, 1993) is an American football wide receiver for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL).

He played football at Oklahoma University.

In the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Shepard was drafted by the Giants.

Early years

Shepard was born on February 10, 1993. Shepard played football at Heritage Hall School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he ran for 1,115 yards and tallied 38 touchdowns in his high school football career. He carried the ball 28 times for 303 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior and he intercepted 73 passes for 1,243 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was selected to the Under Armour All-American Game during his senior season. Shepard also competed in basketball and track at Heritage. He finished second in the long jump at the State Meet in 2011 as a senior, with a leap of 6.69 meters (21'11.5").

Shepard was a consensus four-star recruit for ESPN.com, Rivals.com, 247sports.com, and Scout.com. Under head coach Bob Stoops, he committed to Oklahoma to play college football.

Personal life

Derrick Shepard's father, who played in Oklahoma and in the NFL from 1987 to 1991, was a wide receiver. He died when the pound was six. His uncles, Darrell (1980–81), and Woodie (1975–79), both played at Oklahoma.

On March 3, 2018, Shepard married model Chanel Iman. Cali Clay Shepard, their first child, was born on August 10, 2018. Cassie Snow Shepard, their second daughter, was born on December 17, 2019. Shepard and Iman announced that they would get divorced in January 2022.

Sterling Shepard Career

College career

Shepard started all 13 games at the University of Oklahoma in 2012 and had 45 receptions for 621 yards and three touchdowns. On September 8, he made his collegiate debut against Florida A&M and had three receptions for 48 receiving yards. He had seven receptions for 108 receiving yards and his first collegiate receiving touchdown against Kansas State in the following game. He appeared in 13 games as a sophomore in 2013, totaling 61 receptions for 603 yards and seven touchdowns. He played his best game of his collegiate career against Tulsa on September 14, with eight receptions for 123 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. He scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown on a 13-yard play in the 2014 Sugar Bowl against Alabama. Shepard played in 12 of 13 games as a junior in 2014. With 177 and 215 later against Tulsa, he started the season off very well, posting career-highs in receiving yards at first. He had 49 receptions for 911 yards and five touchdowns in the first seven games of the season, but after suffering a groin injury on a reception against Iowa State, he was forced to miss the remainder of the game and the next week's match against Baylor and limited him to one reception for 13 yards in the final four games. He appeared in all 14 games and had 86 receptions for 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior in 2015. He made a five-yard touchdown against Tennessee on September 2, causing overtime. He got a game-winning 18-yard pass from Mayfield in the second overtime. He had 233 receptions for 3,482 yards and 26 touchdowns during his collegiate career.

Professional career

Shepard was the 32nd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Giants in the second round. He was the fifth wide receiver to be drafted this year. The Giants signed Shepard to a four-year, $5.94 million contract, with three-year guarantees and a signing bonus of $2.52 million.

Shepard and Odell Beckham Jr. were drafted as starting wide receivers heading into the regular season. He appeared in the Giants' season opener against the Dallas Cowboys and caught his first touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Eli Manning, aideing the Giants in their victory 20–19. Shepard won a 16-13 victory over the New Orleans Saints the following week, with a season-high eight passes for 117 receiving yards. During Eli Manning's first loss of the season to the Washington Redskins on September 25, 2016, he caught five passes for 73 yards and caught a 23-yard touchdown pass. In a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on November 6, 2016, he continued to play as a promising receiver after making three receptions for 50 yards and a 23-yard touchdown pass. In a 21-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, Shepard caught five passes for 42 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Shepard had his third game in a row after leading the Chicago Bears to a 22–16 victory over them on November 20, 2016. Shepard had seven catches for 61 yards and a touchdown as the Giants lost 24–19 in Week 16 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the season with 65 receptions for 683 yards and eight receiving touchdowns. With an 11-05 record, the Giants made the playoffs. In the 38–13 Wild Card Round loss to the Green Bay Packers, he had four receptions for 63 yards in his playoff debut. Following the season, he was selected to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Shepard opened the 2017 season with nine receptions for 67 yards in the first two games against the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions. He had seven receptions for 133 yards and a receiving touchdown, one of seven total plays against the Philadelphia Eagles. Shepard missed multiple games due to reported migraine problems during the 2017 season. Shepard had a career high eleven receptions for 142 receiving yards against the San Francisco 49ers on Week 10. Shepard tied his career high for receptions against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15 and set a new record for goals with sixteen. Shepard also had a touchdown pass, something he didn't get during Week 10. He finished the 2017 season with 59 receptions for 731 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Shepard had five receptions for 167 yards against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. In Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, Shepard had two catches for nine yards and the game-winning touchdown. He had 66 receptions for 872 yards and four touchdowns in the 2018 season.

Shepard signed a four-year, $41 million contract extension with the Giants on April 10, 2019, with $21.3 million as a guarantee. As the Giants defeated 32-31, Shepard had seven passes for 100 yards and a touchdown in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shepard won by 36-20 over the Miami Dolphins in Week 15 with a season-high nine touchdowns for 111 yards. Shepard had 57 receptions for 576 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the 2019 season.

Shepard missed the game against the Chicago Bears in Week 2 due to a toe injury and did not return in the second quarter. Shepard was placed on a wounded reserve with turf toe on September 23, 2020. He was activated on October 22, 2020. Shepard's victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 was a touchdown and a touchdown, and she ran for 24 yards and another touchdown. In 12 games, he had 66 receptions for 656 yards and three touchdowns.

In a 27–13 loss to the Denver Broncos, Shepard finished the game with seven receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown.

In Week 15, Shepard suffered from a season-ending injury in the Giants' loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The next day, he was put on wounded reserve. He played for 36 yards and one touchdown in seven games in the 2021 season.

Shepard tore his left ACL in the fourth quarter during the 16-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. On September 28, 2022, he was put on injured reserve.

Fourteen fields (and 16 teams) currently use an artificial playing surface at their stadium, and a growing number of players have expressed their preference for grass. According to Front Office Sports, making the change would cost the league will be costly, with totaling the tab at $11.9 million.
