In a crucial game that might determine the Big Ten Leaders Division champion, he made his first appearance on the road against #15 Wisconsin.

Wilson, along with Justin Brown, who migrated to Oklahoma, Devon Smith, who transferred to Marshall, and Curtis Drake, who was suspended after a breach of team rules, was hurled into the spotlight in 2012 under new head coach Bill O'Brien.

In the Nittany Lions' 9–4 season, Robinson quickly came to an understanding with new coach Bill O'Brien and quarterback Matt McGloin. Robinson responded after losing by five touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns in a 34–7 victory over Navy in the first game since Shawney Kersey was suspended from the squad. "Obviously, he's made a huge improvement from the spring, and from there we saw that he could be a really good receiver." He's getting more and better at routing routes, getting out of routes, and, in addition, a much more efficient job with holding the ball in his hands every day. He has done a good job in receiving promotion in certain sectors, as we ask him to do, and he's been an excellent student of the game." In a 24–13 victory over Temple, he had five receptions for 82 receiving yards and a touchdown on September 22. In a 39-28 victory over #24 Northwestern, he had nine receptions for 85 receiving yards and two touchdowns on October 6.
