College career

Over competing schools, including Illinois, Indiana, and Marshall, Anderson decided to attend Temple University to play college football for the Temple Owls over the weekend. Anderson spent time on special teams during his redshirt-freshman season and primarily as a defensive back during his first year in Philadelphia. Anderson converted to wide receiver in 2013 after Matt Rhule's appointment as Temple's head coach. He had 791 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Anderson set a Temple school record for receiving yards in a game with 239 against SMU in the 2013 season. Anderson skipped the 2014 season due to academic eligibility issues. Anderson spent 2014 attending classes at a community college in Florida. Anderson played for 939 yards in his senior year. Anderson's reception and yardage numbers were the second most ever by a Temple player in school history. In honor of his senior season, Anderson was chosen by the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Conference team and the Third Team All-Conference squad. Anderson was selected to play in the 2016 East–West Shrine Game after his senior season.

Professional career

Anderson went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft after running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at Temple's pro day. The New York Jets signed Anderson to a three-year, $1.63 million contract, which included a $1,000 bonus as an undrafted free agent.

Anderson played for Jalin Marshall, Chandler Worthy, Jeremy Ross, and Charone Peake, the Jets' fifth wide receiver. With 264 yards, he led all players in the 2016 pre-season in receiving yards, with 13 catches and three touchdowns, giving him a spot on the Jets' final 53-man roster and becoming their fifth wide receiver starting the season.

In the New York Jets' season-opening 23–22 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, he made his professional regular season debut. Anderson made his first appearance on a 26-yard pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick on September 25, 2016 and the Kansas City Chiefs lost 24–3 to the Kansas City Chiefs for 34 receiving yards. Anderson was named the Jets' starting slot receiver against the Seattle Seahawks in the next game and finished the 27-17 loss with two catches for 12 yards. Anderson was the Jets' starting slot receiver following Eric Decker's season-ending injury on October 12, 2016. He had four receptions for 61 yards and caught his first touchdown on a 40-yard pass from Bryce Petty on December 5, 2016. The New York Jets lost 41-108 to the Indianapolis Colts. Anderson had a season-high six catches and 99 receiving yards in a 23-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. In a Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, he led the Jets with 80 receiving yards, made four touchdowns, and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Petty.

In 16 games and eight starts, he had 42 receptions, 587 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in his rookie season.

Anderson played for 50 receiving yards in his first two games, a 21–12 loss to the Buffalo Bills and a 45-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders, and he began his second season with six receptions for 50 yards combined. He had three receptions for 95 yards and his first receiving touchdown of the season in Week 3 of the Miami Dolphins, a 20–6 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Anderson was held to 35 receiving yards on three catches during Week 7 of the Miami Dolphins' second divisional game. Anderson threw his helmet in rage, afraid that he wasn't getting enough targets, causing an unsportsmanlike conduct foul. Anderson was fined $12,154 on October 27, 2008. Anderson did a good job against the Atlanta Falcons on Week 8. He had a field day with over 100 receiving yards in his first professional game. In a 25-20 loss, he had 106 receiving yards on six plays, including one touchdown and a one-handed catch for 32 yards. Anderson continued his touchdown streak against the Carolina Panthers in Week 12, with a 54-yard touchdown and a 33-yard touchdown, extending his touchdown streak to five games. He finished with 146 receiving yards, but the Jets lost 35-27. Anderson led the Jets to 38-31 victories over the Kansas City Chiefs on Week 13. He had 14 receptions for 120 receiving yards over the final four games of the regular season. He had 63 receptions for 941 yards and seven touchdowns in his second season.

Anderson had been limited to eight receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown in the first four games of the 2018 season. Anderson also made two big plays with touchdowns 76 yards and 35 yards respectively during Week 5 against the Denver Broncos. With the Jets defeated 34-16, he ended the game with 123 receiving yards on three plays. Anderson finished with 140 receiving yards and a touchdown in overtime as the Jets defeated the Green Bay Packers 38-44 in overtime on Week 16. He played for 752 yards and six touchdowns for the Jets this season.

The Jets held a second-round restricted free agent tender on Anderson on February 28, 2019.

Anderson finished with five catches for 125 yards, including a 92-yard touchdown, while the Jets defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 24–22. Anderson had seven catches for 116 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 as the Jets defeated the Miami Dolphins 22-21. Anderson finished the 2019 season with 52 receptions for 779 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.

Anderson was signed by the Carolina Panthers to a two-year, $20 million deal that included $12 million in guarantees and a signing bonus of $8 million. The signing brought together Anderson, the former Temple head coach, and new Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, P. J. Walker, and Colin Thompson.

In Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders, Anderson made his Panther debut against the Las Vegas Bulls. As the Panthers lost 30-30, Anderson had six receptions for 115 receiving yards and a touchdown from former Jets teammate Teddy Bridgewater. As the Panthers lost 17-31, Anderson finished with nine receptions for 109 receiving yards during Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Anderson had eight receptions for 112 receiving yards as the Panthers defeated the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5 of Week 5. During the 28-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Anderson had 4 catches for 94 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown reception. Anderson finished the 2020 season with 95 receptions for 1,096 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.

Anderson re-signed with the Panthers on a two-year contract extension worth $29.5 million, which continued through the 2023 season.

Anderson had a 57-yard touchdown on his first reception of the game against the New York Jets in Week 1, as the Panthers defeated the New York Jets 19–14. Anderson finished the 2021 season with 53 receptions for 519 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.

Anderson played for 102 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, but Anderson was suspended after Anderson got into a tumultuous discussion with wide receiver coach Joe Dailey.

Anderson was traded to the Arizona Cardinals for a 2024 sixth round draft pick and a 2025 seventh round draft pick on October 17, the day after the game against the Rams.
