Stephen McKinley Henderson (born August 31, 1949) is an American actor.
He is best known for his stage work, particularly in several of August Wilson's plays, and he has appeared on stage, as well as on television and television.
Early life and education
Henderson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Ruby Naomi and Elihue Henderson. He spent a year at Lincoln University, Missouri, and was a member of Group 1 at the Juilliard School Drama Division before he left. He earned his BFA in Acting at the North Carolina School of the Arts (1972). He received his Master of Arts in Theatre (1977) at Purdue University. He attended summer sessions at Rose Bruford College in London and William Esper Studios in New York City.
Henderson was chosen to (virtually) return to his alma mater, Purdue University, in 2020 as part of the "Old Masters Program," an Old Master, meaning a person who has made major contributions to the field of study and to society. He participated with the Purdue community through a variety of interactive platforms, including the Old Masters Podcast, personal host calls, virtual classroom lectures, and student organizations in which he discussed his work and achievement. Henderson was the first hybrid version of the Old Master's program in 2020, and it was the first hybrid version, with Henderson broadcasting his appearances from his home. Career
Henderson is best known for his stage performances. In the productions of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Between Riverside and Crazy, he received the 2015 Obie Award for Best Actor for his role as Walter "Pops" Washington. He played Jim Bono in August Wilson's Fences revival, starring Denzel Washington, for which Henderson received a Tony Award as a supporting actor as well as the Richard Seff Award from Actor's Equity; he reprised his role in Washington's 2016 film version. Henderson appeared in Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea in 2016, starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams as the boss of Affleck's character. He appeared in Dracula, the Musical's Broadway performance before. He appeared in Greta Gerwig's 2017 film Lady Bird as Father Leviatch. He has appeared in Drowning Crow, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and King Hedley II's premiere on Broadway. Henderson is recognized as a veteran performer of August Wilson's oeuvre.
The gossipy Turnbo in Jitney, for which he received a Drama Desk Award, is Wilson's signature role in August. He appeared in the 1996 premiere at the Pittsburgh Public Theater and then honed it (as Wilson was still honing the script) in other regional theaters before its 2000 debut off-Broadway. Although they did not transfer to Broadway, Jitney and the rest of the cast travelled to London, where it received the Olivier Award for best new play in 2002.
