Stephen "Stef" Carpenter (/'st?f/STEF) (born August 3, 1970) is an American musician best known as the co-founder and lead guitarist of the rock band Deftones. Both ringing open strings and dissonant chord voicings, as well as stock power chords in polyrhythms, are employed in his guitar technique.
Carpenter began his musical career with the Deftones, who played the traditional six-string guitar.
He began playing a seven-string guitar in the late 1990s after being inspired by such bands as Fear Factory and Meshuggah.
Following Deftones' third album White Pony, subsequent releases would be written with seven strings, until Diamond Eyes and 2012's Koi No Yokan, both written with an eight-string guitar. In Guitar World's The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists poll, Carpenter was ranked 60th.
Early life
Stephen Carpenter was born in Sacramento, California, on August 3, 1970, to an American father and a Mexican mother. Marci is his sister. He is Chuck Billy's first cousin. He grew up in the Sacramento area and pursued many interests, including skateboarding.
While skateboarding, Carpenter was struck by a vehicle when he was 15 years old. For several months, he was in possession of a wheelchair. He started playing guitar by listening to the music of bands like Anthrax, Stormtroopers of Death, and Metallica at this time. It has been reported that the driver paid Carpenter a cash settlement that allowed the band to buy parts, but drummer Abe Cunningham said in an interview that this was "a myth about how our band was formed."
Carpenter was a student at McClatchy High School with future bandmates Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham. They were childhood friends and remained close friends through the skateboarding scene in Sacramento. Moreno discovered out that Carpenter played guitar, he arranged a jam session with Cunningham, and the threesome started playing in Carpenter's garage in 1989. After playing with several bassists, the band landed on Chi Cheng and within two years, the band began playing club shows and then expanded their playing territory to San Francisco and Los Angeles, where they appeared with bands such as Korn.
Chino Moreno, the lead singer of the Deftones and bandmate, has been described as tumultuous at times. According to reports, the recording of Saturday Night Wrist was delayed due to their "warfare." Carpenter said he'd "definitely be able to bring it to the next level" if it was purely offensive for him [Chino]]; Carpenter said that "more aggressive for him] equals it being "more offensive for him [Chino]]; "more right now is asking too much."
Carpenter expressed his belief in many conspiracy theories, including the belief that the Earth is flat and expressing anti-vaccination views. Moreno speculated that this could be related to Carpenter's cannabis use or his presence in the Bataclan theatre shortly before the September 2015 Paris attacks in November 2015.
Carpenter has said that he listens mostly to hip hop, Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Faith No More are some of his influences, including hip hop, Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Faith No More. He has also stated that Chaosphere by Meshuggah is his most traumatic record, from second one to second last. It left me wondering where I'd been the whole time." When recording Diamond Eyes by the deftones, he claimed that the only artist he listened to was American rapper Tech N9ne.
