Stefan Struve Career

Mixed martial arts career

Struve made his professional debut for the GFN group while 17 years old, in a gruesome fight at Gentlemen Fight Night, defeating John De Wilde. He had racked up a record of 16–2, losing once (in his second fight) to Romualds Garkulis and again in the second round of a Bellator Light Heavyweight tournament in Ukraine, to potential Bellator Light heavyweight champion Christian M'Pumbu.

Struve negotiated with the DREAM and Affliction promotions in 2008 before concluding a four-fight contract with the UFC.

Struve lost his UFC debut at UFC 95 to Junior dos Santos in the first round, after dos Santos screamed Struve with a ferocious flurry of punches.

Struve defeated Denis Stojni in his next fight on June 13, 2009, at UFC 99. When on his back in the first round, the Struve was cut open by hammer fists from Stojnic, and the team pressed Stojnic's back into the second round, eventually securing a rear naked choke to win by submission at 2:37 in the second round.

On October 24, 2009, Struve defeated Chase Gormley, the unbeaten UFC newcomer, at UFC 104 (also receiving the "Submission of the Night" award). Since Gormley's dismissal of Struve, the match was mainly composed of grappling. Struve attempted submissions before giving up top position to Gormley and securing a triangle choke.

Struve also agreed to a new four-fight contract with the UFC. At UFC 107, he saw his first match of this season, as opposed to returning veteran Paul Buentello. Todd Duffee, who was injured, was replaced by Struve. Struve defeated Buentello by a majority vote (29–28, 29–28, and 28–28). Struve said, "I don't feel like a winner right now," after the fight, and Struve appeared dissatisfied with his results.

Roy Nelson, the Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights champion, defeated Struve on March 31, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 21. Nelson sank under several of Struve's punches and had a solid right hook on his chin for the knockout.

At UFC 117, Struve met undefeated UFC rookie Christian Morecraft. At 0:22 of round 2, Struve defeated Morecraft via TKO thanks to punches. In round one, Morecraft dominated Struve with a ground and pound attack, but Struve was counterpunched and knocked out by Struve during an explosive rush in round two. Struve earned the "Knock Out of the Night" bonus award for their efforts. "I'm almost fainting right now, guys," Struve said in his first round.

Struve signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC in September 2010.

On December 11, 2010, Struve defeated Sean McCorkle, who had been undefeated, in a first-round TKO. Struve swept McCorkle, gaining ground, after being taken down early and escaping a kimura attempt, eschewing a kimura attempt, delivering a steady stream of strikes for the victory.

On May 28, 2011, Struve met Travis Browne, who had been devastated by then-undefeated Travis Browne at UFC 130. Despite starting off strong and nearly locking in a D'arce choke, Struve would mistakenly leap for a flying knee, which Browne responded with a KO Struve punch.

Struve defeated Pat Barry on October 1, 2011, on Versus 6, a UFC fixture. Struve clinched with Barry, dragged him to the ground, and then locked in a triangle armbar, receiving the "Submission of the Night" bonus award in the process, despite a long-running process.

At UFC on Fuel TV 1, Struve defeated Dave Herman on February 15, 2012, winning in a second-round TKO. Struve got off to a slow start in the first round, with no success against Herman who closed the distance and appeared to be the more agile striker of the two teams. Struve's debut in the second round began to open, mixing in a body-clinch match while piecing together striking combinations. He landed a left hook inside leg kick, left hook & right uppercut in a snap to knock a stunned Herman, who then proceeded to mount his opponent and deliver strikes until requiring the referee's intervention.

On May 26, 2012, Struve was supposed to face Mark Hunt at UFC 146, but Hunt was forced to pull out of the match due to an injury and was replaced by Lavar Johnson on May 17, 2012. Struve quickly submitted Johnson with an armbar in the first round, earning his third "Submission of the Night" bonus.

On September 29, 2012, Struve faced undefeated adversary, Stipe Miocic, at UFC on Fuel TV 5. Miocic barely escaped Struve in a competitive stand-up contest until Struve's second round, when Struve used his reach more effectively and became more offensive. In the second round, he secured the fight by TKO. Both participants were given "Fight of the Night" awards for their efforts.

Struve took on Mark Hunt on March 3, 2013 at UFC on Fuel TV 8. Hunt defeated Struve by TKO in the third round and broke Struve's jaw with one of his last punches of the fight.

Struve's symptoms, as well as an enlarged heart, were discovered by doctors on August 20, 2013, which means that his aortic valve has only two leaflets rather than three. For the next two months, it was decided to treat his illness with drugs. Struve's heart disease was improving, according to reports on October 8, 2013, and returning to combat was also a possibility. He was expected to return to a full training schedule on November 24, 2013.

Struve has permission from the doctor to fight again and return to the Octagon, according to boss Lex McMahon on April 7, 2014. "I think we're really close." Stefan had been actually cleared by his doctor in the Netherlands, which was very encouraging news. Right now, we're waiting for a copy of his file to be translated so that the UFC can have a look at it, and it will determine whether or not to have Stefan get a second opinion or not. If they do bring him out for a second opinion, it would almost be out in Los Angeles with the UFC's cardiologist, who is used frequently. Dan Hardy was sent by the Department to him and a few others," I believe.

Struve was supposed to face Matt Mitrione at UFC 175, but it was not scheduled to meet him. Struve fainted in the dressing room and had an elevated heart rate during the first match of the main card. UFC fighters have decided to call off the match due to a crew's absence. Struve was later admitted to the hospital for precautionary purposes.

On December 13, 2014, Struve took on Alistair Overeem at UFC on Fox 13. In the first round, he was disqualified by KO.

On August 1, 2015, Struve defeated Antônio Rodrigo No. 190. He was a unanimous decision in his second fight in his career, ending in a draw.

On November 14, 2015, Struve met Jared Rosholt at UFC 193. By a majority vote, he lost the fight.

On May 8, 2016, Struve faced Antônio Silva at UFC Fight Night 87. He won the first round by a knockout after catching his opponent with a right hook on the chin, a knee to the body, and multiple elbows to the side of his opponent's head. Struve also received his first Performance of the Night bonus as a result of this victory.

Struve was scheduled to face Ruslan Magomedov at UFC 204 on October 8, 2016. Magomedov had to drop out in early September due to a staph infection. Daniel Omielaczuk had him replace him. In the second round, Struve gained the back and forth battle by submission.

Struve was originally scheduled to face Junior dos Santos in a rematch at UFC Fight Night 105 on February 19, 2017. However, Struve pulled out due to a shoulder injury on January 12, the team had to cancel due to a shoulder injury.

On September 2, 2017, Struve took on Alexander Volkov at UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Struve. In the third round, he was disqualified via TKO. Despite losing, Struve received his second Fight of the Night bonus award for the match.

At UFC 222, Struve defeated Andrei Arlovski. He was disqualified by a majority vote in the fight.

At UFC Fight Night 134, Struve met Marcin Tybura on July 22, 2018. He was disqualified by a unanimous decision in the fight.

Struve defeated Marcos Rogério de Lima in the final battle of his UFC contract, in the ultimate fight of his governing body. Despite being knocked down by the first punch of the fight, he was able to win the second round by arm-triangle choke. Struve said it would be his last fight after the match. This win earned him the Performance of the Night Award.

Struve signed a new six-fight deal with the UFC and met Ben Rothwell on December 7, 2019, at UFC on ESPN 7. In round two, he lost the match due to a technical knockout. Rothwell mistakenly struck Struve in the groin twice twice during the second round and was fined one point for these infractions. The referee encouraged the compromised Struve to continue, resulting in a Rothwell finish in the second round.

On October 24, 2020 at UFC 254, Struve defeated Tai Tuivasa. In the first round, he lost the fight due to a knockout.

Struve announced his retirement from professional mixed martial arts competition on February 15, 2021.
