Conor McGregor Career

Amateur mixed martial arts career

McGregor made his mixed martial arts debut in Dublin on February 17, 2007 against Kieran Campbell, an amateur fighting for the Irish Ring of Truth promotion. In the first round, he was defeated by a technical knockout (TKO). He became a professional after the war and was officially licensed by the Irish Cage of Truth organization. McGregor started training at the Straight Blast Gym (SBG) in Dublin in 2008 under John Kavanagh.

Professional mixed martial arts career

McGregor was able to defeat Gary Morris in a second-round TKO on March 9, 2008, defeating him as a lightweight. McGregor defeated Mo Taylor in his second match, but he lost by kneebone to submission specialist Artemij Sitenkov. McGregor considered a new path after losing to featherweight in his next bout against Stephen Bailey before his mother contacted his mentor John Kavanagh and encouraged him to pursue mixed martial arts.

McGregor then won his second match against Connor Dillon, then at featherweight, before returning to neutral for a match against Joseph Duffy, in which he suffered his second professional defeat after being sentenced to an arm-triangle choke. Following this, McGregor went on an eight-fight winning streak between 2011 and 2012, making him the first European professional mixed martial artist to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously.

Dana White, the UFC president of Ireland, went to Dublin, Ireland, for the Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage from Trinity College, and was bombarded with offers to transfer McGregor to the UFC. White offered McGregor a contract a day later after a meeting and discussing UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) revealed in February 2013 that they had signed McGregor to a multi-fight contract. He became Ireland's second fighter to compete for the company in joining, following teammate Tom Egan.

Mousasi vs. Latifi, on June 6, 2013, McGregor made his UFC debut against Marcus Brimage at UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs. Latifi. He won the tournament by being knocked out in round one. McGregor's first "Knockout of the Night" award was also earned for him.

At UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17, 2013, McGregor had been scheduled to face Andy Ogle but was forced to cancel due to a bruise and was later replaced by eventual UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway. McGregor was defeated by a unanimous vote (30–27, 30–27, and 30–26). Following his match with Holloway, an MRI scan revealed that McGregor had to break his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the bout and would need surgery, keeping him out of action for up to ten months.

After recovering from his ACL injury, McGregor was supposed to face Cole Miller on July 19th in his comeback bout. However, Miller came out of the fight due to a thumb injury and was replaced by Diego Brando. In Dublin, Ireland, McGregor faced Brando in front of a packed, rowdy crowd of 9,500 people at The O2 in his hometown. Referee Leon Roberts stopped the combat at 4:05 of the first round. McGregor's first "Perception of the Night" award was won by the winner.

McGregor met with Lorenzo Fertitta and agreed to a new multi-fight deal with the UFC ahead of his next fight. Dustin Poirier was the next opponent to face McGregor at UFC 178 on September 27, 2014. Despite McGregor's 9 major strikes to Poirier's 10, he was able to gain a win early in the first round by pressuring Poirier's back foot before exploding with a left hook behind Poirier's ear, causing referee Herb Dean to step in. The finish in the first round came at 1:46. This was Poirier's first UFC loss via KO/TKO, and McGregor's second straight "Perception of the Night" award was given to him.

Dennis Siver fought him on January 18, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 59. In the second round, he defeated him via TKO. McGregor received his third straight "Perseverance of the Night" award.

At the UFC 183 Q&A on January 30, 2015, the much awaited match with Aldo was announced. During the UFC's annual International Fight Week, McGregor announced that he was supposed to face Aldo at 189 on July 11, 2015 for the undisputed UFC Featherweight Championship. The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, hosted the fight. The UFC, who is confident that the fight will exceed expectations, has increased the promotional budget for the fight, with company Dana White stating that "the UFC] spent more money promoting Aldo–McGregor than in any other fight in UFC history."

On January 30, 2015, the fight against Aldo was announced at the UFC 183 and both McGregor and Aldo embarked on a 12-day world tour, featuring eight cities in five countries, including Aldo's home country of Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) and McGregor's hometown of Dublin. On March 20, the tour began in Rio de Janeiro and ended in Dublin on March 31. However, it was reported that Aldo had sustained a rib fracture and had pulled out of the match as a result. McGregor stayed on the track and was postponed to face Chad Mendes in the Interim Featherweight Championship. The official attendance for the festival, 16,019, beat the record in Nevada, while the entry of $7,200,000 set a new record for a mixed martial arts festival in the United States. "The Foggy Dew," McGregor's entrance song, was performed live by Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor prior to the match. McGregor won the UFC Interim Featherweight Championship by TKO, beating him on TKO.

In which McGregor coached against Urijah Faber, he appeared in UFC's The Ultimate Fighter. Ryan Hall, a Faber team member, finished the competition winning the tournament.

McGregor will meet José Aldo in the UFC Featherweight Championship on Sunday, and it was announced on ten August that the event would take place on 12 December. Both McGregor and Aldo weighed in at the weigh-ins, weighing in at 145 pounds. McGregor won the first round with a left hook, snapping his seven-year WEC and UFC championship tenure and eighteen-fight win streak to claim the title and winning the "Perspector of the Night" bonus as well. This was the fastest knockout in a title match in UFC history.

In a welterweight match, McGregor faced The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 champion and former UFC Lightweight Championship challenger Nate Diaz on Friday, 196 to UFC 196. On February 24, 2016, a press conference was held to help promote the forthcoming main event, with both men trading insults. McGregor and Diaz briefly clashed over a brief brawl during a face-off on Thursday, after McGregor landed a strike on Diaz's lead hand.

Diaz returned fire with two consecutive hooks, one of Nate and his brother, Nick Diaz, dubbed the "Stockton Slap," which started with a group name. McGregor had success with his bodywork, but Diaz began to land combinations of his own. McGregor attempted a double leg takedown after Diaz' one-two punches, which Diaz defended by sprawling. Diaz threatened the guillotine choke, which forced McGregor to his back after stopping McGregor from scrambling, but Diaz secured the mount and secured a rear naked choke. At 4:12 in the second round, McGregor was tapped to the submission. Both athletes were given "Fight of the Night" pay, and McGregor received the most revealed money of any fighter in the company's history, at $1,000,000. While praising Diaz, McGregor was dismissive of his own performance, saying, "I was inefficient with my electricity." It was a war of energy, and he had the upper hand on it."

At UFC 200 on July 9, a rematch with Diaz was planned for the event; but the UFC announced on April 19 that McGregor had been barred from the competition after failing to fulfill media obligations relating to the fight. The feud with McGregor was postponed and took place the following month, contested again at welterweight at UFC 202. McGregor won the rematch by majority vote (48–47, 47–48, and 48–47). The contest was once more honoured "Fight of the Night" accolades. With 1,650,000 viewers, the event tied for the highest selling pay-per-view in UFC history, which previously held by UFC 100.

McGregor's next match will be against Eddie Alvarez for the UFC Lightweight Championship on September 27, according to UFC 205. McGregor landed a multiple-punch combination to stop his opponent by technical knockout in the second round after dropping Alvarez multiple times throughout the first round. This was the first time a competitor had won UFC championships in two different weight divisions, as well as repeating McGregor's feat during his time with Cage Warriors. This win earned him the nickname "Perspetion of the Night," and it is widely regarded as one of McGregor's finest performances within the octagon.

McGregor had vacated the Featherweight Championship, effectively promoting José Aldo to the undisputed champion on November 26th, owing to his inactivity in the division. McGregor's coach, on the other hand, confirmed new reports that McGregor had indeed been barred of the position.

McGregor, the lightweight champion at UFC 205, has announced that he would take time off from the UFC to wait for the birth of his first child, who is set to be born in 2017. McGregor spent the majority of his public appearances in early-2017 campaigning for a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. With a victory by TKO for Mayweather, the game came to an end in the 10th round.

McGregor was stripped of the UFC Lightweight Championship due to inactivity, and Khabib Nurmagomedov was crowned the undisputed champion after defeating Al Iaquinta at the tournament.

McGregor will return to the octagon on August 3 for the first time since November 2016 at UFC 229 to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship, according to the organizers. This was one of the biggest contests in the history of the game, and it was brimming with pre-fight mania. In the fourth round, Nurmagomedov met McGregor with a neck crank.

McGregor announced his resignation on social media on March 26, 2019. Dana White, on the other hand, saw this announcement as a means to buy a majority stake in the company, with White later claiming that his resignation was not final and that he had been in regular contact with him, promising to fight again in the future. McGregor had previously announced that he wanted a match with Khabib Nurmagomedov and that he would see him in the Octagon.

McGregor defeated Donald Cerrone in a welterweight match on January 18, 2020 at UFC 246. He was more than a year away from the Octagon. He won the fight by a technical knockout 40 seconds into the first round. For his success, he received the Performance of the Night award. McGregor became the first UFC fighter to have knockout finishes in the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight divisions. McGregor confirmed once more that he was exiting from combat on June 6, 2020.

McGregor was scheduled to face former UFC Lightweight Championship champion Dustin Poirier in a rematch of their 2014 match at UFC 257 on January 24-2021 amid rumors of retirement. In the second round, he lost his first round due to a technical breakdown, marking his first knockout loss in his career. After the knockout, McGregor was sentenced to 6 months in medical probation.

McGregor defeated Dustin Poirier for the third time on July 10th, 2021, UFC 264. In round one, McGregor lost due to a physical injury after the ringside doctor called the fight off. McGregor was born with a broken tibia, causing him to be unable to move ahead.

Professional boxing career

McGregor will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his first professional boxing match against him on August 26, 2017, in Paradise, Nevada. The showtime PPV in the United States and Sky Sports Box Office in the United Kingdom was shown on Showtime PPV. With 8 oz, the brawl was fought at a super welterweight (154 pounds). Gloves are included in this set. The competition was expected to be the richest in boxing history.

Mayweather and McGregor would compete for the WBC Money Belt on August 24, 2017. Mayweather would receive a $100,000 purse, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and McGregor was guaranteed $30 million. Mayweather beat TKO in the 10th round of the tournament, with scores 87–83, 89–82, and 89–81 in favor of Mayweather. From 13,094 tickets sold, the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that the live gate for the event was $55,414,865.79. Mayweather is said to have earned around $280 million in total, while McGregor came out with $130 million.
