Gunnar Nelson Career

Mixed martial arts career

Gunnar competed in mixed martial arts for the first time in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May 2007. John Olesen, a Danish fighter, was defeated in the duel. The judge called the contest a draw.

In the 16 months following his debut in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Denmark, Gunnar retired after being barred from the sport for almost two years. In the first round of BAMMA 2: Roundhouses at the Roundhouse in February 2010, he defeated Sam Elsdon via submission in the first round. In his next fight against Danny Mitchell at Cage Contender 6 in Manchester, England, he won by a point of view before returning to BAMMA later this year. Reid's next appearance was at BAMMA 4: Reid vs. Watson in September 2010, where he met briefly unbeaten British prospect Eugene Fadiora and claimed by submission in the first round. With a first-round armbar submission victory over Ukrainian fighter Alexander Butenko at Cage Contender 12 in Dublin Ireland, Gunnar returned to MMA in February 2012. Gunnar and the UFC reached a multi-fight deal in late 2012.

In July 2012, Gunnar agreed to a multifighter with the United FC. He is Iceland's first fighter to fight for the company.

On September 29, 2012, Gunnar was supposed to make his promotional debut against Pascal Krauss at UFC on Fuel TV: Struve vs. Miocic. However, Krauss was forced out of the match due to a backlash (Rich Attonito was briefly linked to beating Gunnar, but he was later linked to fighting Gunnar, but he was forced to miss out) and Gunnar was scheduled to face DaMarques Johnson at 175 lb, but he was unable to put on the required weight. The brawl weighed in at 183 pounds (Gunnar weighed in at 175 pounds). At the 3:34 mark of the first round, Gunnar choked Johnson via rear-naked choke.

On February 16, 2013, Gunnar was supposed to meet Justin Edwards at UFC on Fuel TV: Baro vs. McDonald. Edwards was forced to leave the match due to a back injury, but Jorge Santiago, a returning veteran, was able to assist. Gunnar took the fight by unanimous vote (29–28, 29–28, and 30–27).

Gunnar had been scheduled to face Mike Pyle at UFC 160 on May 25, 2013. However, Gunnar pulled out of the match due to an injury and was replaced by Rick Story.

On March 18, 2017, Gunnar met Alan Jouban at UFC Fight Night 107. After shocking Jouban with a punch, Gunnar beat them guillotine choke by submission in the second round. He was given a Performance of the Night bonus.

On July 16, 2017, Gunnar took on Santiago Ponzinibbio in UFC Fight Night 113. He lost the first round after being knocked out. Gunnar said during one of the earlier discussions that Ponzinibbio poked him in the eye and made him see double: "I should have said something because the majority of the fight was showing double." He caught me with a shot that I didn't really see," he told me. Ponzinibbio denied Gunnar's allegations, saying, "I went out to knock him out and thank God it went as expected," the narrator said. I was defeated by knockout. Well, if (the eye poke) occurred, it wasn't deliberate, but I watched the video again and wasn't sure it wasn't intentional.' Gunnar's appeal was dismissed after the match because the referee had failed to arrest the combat due to eye pokes under the Unified Rules of MMA; UFC denied his appeal.

At UFC Fight Night 130, Gunnar was scheduled to face Neil Magny on May 27, 2018. However, it was announced on April 28, 2018, that he was forced to miss the event due to a knee injury.

Gunnar was scheduled to face Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 160 on September 28, 2019. However, Alves were forced to leave the fight in mid-September due to an undisclosed injury, and Gilbert Burns was recalled. He lost by unanimous vote.

Gunnar was expected to return from extended hiatus and face Cláudio Silva on March 19, 2022 at UFC Fight Night 204, in the first fight of his new multi-fight deal. Silva was forced to miss early March due to a knee injury, but Takashi Sato replaced him in early March. Gunnar took the fight by unanimous vote.
