Souad Massi Life

Souad Massi, born August 23, 1972, is an Algerian Berber singer, guitarist, and guitarist.

She began her career with Atakor, a Kabyle political rock band, before fleeing the country due to a string of death threats.

Massi appeared at the Femmes d'Algerie concert in Paris in 1999, which culminated in a recording deal with Island Records. Massi's music, which prominently features the acoustic guitar, showcases Western musical styles such as rock, country, or the Portuguese fado, but it also incorporates oriental musical influences and oriental instruments such as the oud and African musical styles.

Massi performs in Classical Arabic, Algerian Arabic, French, occasional in English, and in the Kabyle Berber script, often using more than one word in the same tune.

Childhood and early bands

Massi was born in Algeria to a poor family of six children. She grew up in Algiers' working-class Bab El Oued neighborhood and started playing the guitar at an early age.

She began learning music at a young age, performing and playing guitar, as a child of her older brother. As a child, she immersed herself in American country and roots music, influencing her songwriting. She began a flamenco band at the age of 17, but then became dissatisfied and left the group shortly.

Massi formed Atakor, a Algerian political rock band, who were inspired by Western rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and U2. She recorded and performed with the group for seven years, releasing an award-winning album and two hit music videos. The band, on the other hand, became a target due to its political lyrics and increasing success. Massi posed herself by cutting her hair and dressing in male clothing, but a string of anonymous suicide threats later. She left the band and moved to Paris, France, in 1999.

Personal life

Souad Massi and her two children, Inji and Amira, now live in Paris, France. She is a fan of Leonard Cohen and has listed AC/DC and INXS as one of her formative influences.

Souad Massi Career

Solo career

Massi was invited to appear at the Femmes d'Algérie ("Women of Algeria") festival in Paris in 1999, which culminated in a recording contract with Island Records. Raoui ("Storyteller"), her solo debut album, debuted in June 2001, was compared to 1960s American folk music. The album, which was largely in French and Arabic, became a critical and commercial success in France. She was nominated for "Best Newcomer" at the Radio 3 World Music Awards the following year.

Deb ("Heartbroken"), Deb's second album, came out in 2003. The album's lyrics were more personal than political, and it became one of the most popular North African albums worldwide. Massi's third album, Mesk Elil ("Honeysuckle"), was released three years later. The album delves into the concepts of love and loss, as well as Daby Toure and Rabah Khalfa duets. Gianni Morandi, an Italian singer and showman, appeared on "Non facciamoci prisere dal panico" on the Italian variety show "Non facciamoci prendere dal panico" in 2006.

Houria is her fourth studio album released in 2010. This album was produced by Francis Caballer and Francoise Michel. On its closing song, it features Paul Weller on piano and vocals.
