Shaivonte Aician Gilgeous-Alexander (born July 12, 1998) is a professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association's Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA).

He played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Gilgeous-Alexander was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft with the 11th overall pick, and was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers the same night.

He was drafted to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in his lone season with the Clippers before being moved to Oklahoma City along with Danilo Gallinari and several first round picks in a blockbuster contract for Paul George.

Early life

Gilgeous-Alexander was born in Toronto, Ontario, and grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. Charmaine Gilgeous, his mother, was a track star who competed for Antigua and Barbuda in the 1992 Summer Olympics. As a youth, his father, Vaughn Alexander, tutored him. He began high school at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario, before moving to Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School. He then moved to Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (located in Chattanooga, Tennessee) for his junior and senior years to develop his basketball skills, graduating in 2017.

Personal life

Thomasi Gilgeous-Alexander, Gilgeous-Alexander's younger brother, is a college basketball player for the Evansville Purple Aces. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, his younger cousin, is a NBA basketball player for the Utah Jazz. The two girls have a close friendship and they shared a room at high school coach Zach Ferrell's house.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Career

High school career

He didn't make the St. Thomas More junior team in grade 9 and then played on the school's midget team as a child growing up in Hamilton. He was voted team MVP and the midget boys' city championship. He then attended Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School before moving to Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2015. "I just thought I should have to play better," he said. Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists as a senior.

He participated in the Basketball Without Borders Camp in early 2016.

Gilgeous-Alexander, a four-star recruiter (by ESPN), has originally committed to Florida, but has since re-opened his search in October 2016. He attended Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, Texas, and UNLV. He revealed his decision to play college basketball at Kentucky in the following month. He starred for the World Select Team and scored eleven points in 21 minutes of action at the 2017 Nike Hoop Summit.

College career

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander started the 2017-18 season as a reserve, sitting behind freshman point guard Quade Green, but still averaged over 30 minutes per game. Alexander erupted against Louisville in December, scoring 24 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists, and securing 3 steals after a tough loss to UCLA. Gilgeous-Alexander had long hair when he first stepped on the University of Kentucky's campus. However, he cut his hair early in the season, and some believe this started his evolution from sixth man to starting point guard. He continued to coach the team in the following two games against Georgia and LSU, scoring 21 points against Georgia and 18 against LSU. He was a regular contributor to a "struggling" UK team that had a four-game losing streak throughout the season. Hamidou Diallo, Nick Richards, Kevin Knox, and P. J. Washington made him a starter along with four other freshmen: Hamidou Diallo, Nick Richards, Kevin Knox, and P. J. Washington. Despite their losses, his PPG shot up to 12.9 along with 3.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Gilgeous-Alexander had a great SEC tournament and carried that energy into the NCAA Tournament. The magic went out after playing great basketball in the first two rounds against Davidson and Buffalo, but Kentucky lost to Kansas State in the Sweet 16. Gilgeous-Alexander's last college basketball game was a missed three-point attempt at the buzzer. On April 9, 2018, he announced his readiness for the 2018 NBA Draft.

Professional career

Gilgeous-Alexander was the eleventh overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2018 NBA draft on June 21, 2018, before being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for the pick after him (which turned out to Miles Bridges) and two future second round picks. In the 2018 NBA Summer League, he made the team's debut in the NBA Summer League, where he averaged 19 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2.3 steals per game.

In a 127-131 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on December 17, 2018, Gilgeous-Alexander scored a season-best of 24 points. In a 112–94 loss to the Golden State Warriors, Gilgeous-Alexander tied his season-best of 24 points. He was named a member of Canada's World Team for the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge, just eleven days later. In a 105-113 loss to the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 of the 2019 playoffs on April 21, 2019, he set a new career high of 25 points.

The Clippers traded Gilgeous-Alexander Gallinari, five first-round draft picks, along with the right to trade two other first-round picks to NBA All-Star Paul George on July 10, 2019. Gilgeous-Alexander made his preseason debut with the Oklahoma City Thunder over the Dallas Mavericks on October 8, 2019. In a 119-104 victory over the Mavericks, he had 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist. In an 118-112 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on December 22, 2019, Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 32 points, three rebounds, and two steals. In a 117-104 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Gilgeous-Alexander recorded his first NBA triple double with 20 points, ten assists, and a career-high 20 rebounds, his second player since Russell Westbrook's to reach a 20-20-20-20-10 stat line in the last 30 years and the youngest ever to reach it.

In a 109–107 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on December 26, 2020, Gilgeous-Alexander added 24 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, and a game-winning jump shot. Gilgeous-Alexander, 20,21, scored a career-high 42 points to give the Oklahoma City Thunder a 102-99 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on February 24, 2021. After playing 35 games, his season came to a stoppage in his plantar fascia.

Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder have signed a five-year, $172 million rookie contract extension, effectively ending Gilgeous-Alexander's career as a member of the All-NBA team on August 3, 2021. Gilgeous-Alexander, 2021, scored 18 points and made a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer on December 18, 2021, defeating the Thunder over his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers 104-103. In a 108-94 win over the Denver Nuggets, he earned his second triple double, with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. Gilgeous-Alexander was suspended for the remainder of the season after suffering an ankle injury on March 28, 2022. He set a new career high of 24.5 points and 5.9 assists per game in the season.

National team career

Gilgeous-Alexander was a member of the Canadian National Team that qualified in the 2016 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in Valdivia, Chile, averaging 7.8 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.0 rebounds, a contest en route to winning silver. At the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila, he competed for Canada's National Team.

Gilgeous-Alexander announced on May 24, 2022, that he would participate in the Canadian senior men's national team for three years.
