Jorge Mário da Silva, better known by his stage name Seu Jorge (born June 8, 1970), is a Brazilian musician, songwriter, and actor.

Many consider him to be a resurrecter of Brazilian pop samba.

Seu Jorge cites samba schools and American soul singer Stevie Wonder as two of his most influential musical influences.

Jorge is also known for his film roles as Mané Galinha in the 2002 film City of God and as Pelé dos Santos in Steve Zissou's 2004 film The Life Aquatic.

Many of his fellow musicians, including Beck and David Bowie, have lauded his musical efforts.

Career

Seu Jorge has made his name known for his work as an actor and soundtrack composer. He appeared in the critically acclaimed 2002 film City of God as Mané Galinha, directed by filmmakers Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund, and then appeared in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic, for which he provided a large part of David Bowie's soundtrack in the form of Portuguese language cover versions.

In June 2006, he appeared at Bonnaroo music festival in Manchester, Tennessee, and in Portugal's Festival Sudoeste TMN. He has appeared at the Harbourfront in Toronto, Ontario, as well as the Theatrefront. Jorge's appearances are known for both excitement and ascension. He appeared with Thievery Corporation at the Austin City Limits in January 2010.

In 2007, his album 'América Brasil' was limited in Brazil under his name Cafuné Gravadora, which was released in the United Kingdom by Proper Music Distribution. Now-Again Records announced in May that Jorge's latest album, Seu Jorge & Almaz, a joint effort with drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from Naço Zumbi and bassist and composer Antonio Pinto, would be released in North America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand on September 27 and New Zealand. "How great Brazilian soul music can be," the album has been described.

He collaborated with Beck on the Mario C. remix of "Tropicália" for the Red Hot Organization's most recent charity album "Red Hot+Rio 2" in 2011.

He collaborated with American fashion designer Rachel Roy on a line of sportswear, boots, jewelry, and handbags in 2012.

In 2015, he was nominated for the 16th Latin Grammy Awards in the Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album category.

In the 2016 Summer Paralympics opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, he appeared after lighting the cauldron on September 8.

Seu Jorge, 89 percent African, 12.9% European, and 2% Amerindian, according to a DNA test. He belongs to the R1b family, indicating that his paternal lineage derives from Western Europe.
