Seth Morrison Life

Skillet, an American Christian rock band, formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1996.

The band currently has members John (lead vocals, bass) and wife Korey Cooper (rhythm guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), as well as Jen Ledger (drums, vocals), and Seth Morrison (lead guitar).

The band has ten albums, with two, Collide and Comatose, receiving Grammy nominations.

The RIAA has two of their albums, Comatose and Awake, as well as Rise and Unleashed, who have been rated Gold by the RIAA early in their careers, with founder John Cooper as the only original member remaining in the band.

They are well-known for their constant touring schedule, earning them a top-five ranking in the Top Work Bands of 2010 by Songkick.com.

Early years (1996–2002)

Skillet was founded in 1996 with two members, John Cooper, former guitarist for Tennessee's progressive rock band Seraph, and Ken Steorts, former guitarist for Urgent Cry. The two bands met while touring together, but they disbanded soon after, so John and Ken's pastor encouraged them to form their own band as a side project. They decided to call the experiment "Skillet." Trey McClurkin joined the band as a temporary drummer afterward. Skillet was only together for a month when the major Christian record label ForeFront Records expressed a lot of curiosity. They first appeared on their demo album Right Upside Your Head in 1996. Skillet, a self-titled debut, was launched on October 29 of the same year. It was well received, and the trio continued to produce fresh content as they toured the United States.

Cooper has said that the band's name was intended to be amusing because the other founding members of other bands had already been in other bands, each with a different sound and style. Covenant Community Church in Memphis, where the band was formed as a worship band activity, had to give them their name because they were like "outhern cooking," where you simply toss a bunch of random things into a big ol' skillet and see what it looks like."

Skillet's latest album, titled Hey You, I Love Your Soul, was released in April 1998. The band's second attempt was a change in style from the band's first outing. Skillet's post-grunge attempt for a lighter alternative rock and style was discarded with this release. Korey Cooper's wife was enlisted shortly after to perform keyboards live in order to reduce his workload.

Invincible, Steorts, his family and debuting Visible Music College were stranded just before the band began recording for their third album, and Kevin Haaland joined the band as their new guitarist. Korey Cooper joined the band permanently and performed keyboards on Invincible's album. The musical style on Invincible changed to a more modern sound as a result of the change. Trey McClurkin left Skillet shortly after Invincible's debut in early 2000, and Lori Peters filled the drummer's role.

Ardent Worship, the band's first worship album and fourth album together, was released in late 2000. On their new album Alien Youth, the band incorporated much of Invincible's sound. Skillet launched Alien Youth on August 28, 2001, the first album on which John Cooper took on production duties with little time between touring and recording. Haaland left the band before Alien Youth's debut, and Ben Kasica took over on guitar.

Ardent Records' Collide, the band's fifth studio album, was released in 2003, and it contained the singles "Savior" and "Collide." Lava Records, an imprint of Atlantic Records, purchased Collide's rights in 2004. Collide was re-released by Lava Records on May 25, 2004, with "Open Wounds" as an additional track. In 2005, the album was nominated for "Best Rock Gospel Album."

Citing P.O.D. Cooper said, "Well, I'm one of these song writers, and everything I hear goes through my John Cooper filter of what I like and what I don't like." [...] All of these activities [...] have a determining influence on me."

On October 3, 2006, Skillet's album Comatose was released. "Rebirthing," "Whispers in the Dark," "The Elder I Get," "The Last Night" and "Better Than Drugs" are among the singles included in the book. The album debuted at No. 1. On the Billboard 200 and No. 54, 55, a Democrat and No. On the top Christian Albums chart in the United States, four of the top Christian albums chart.

Lori Peters, Skillet's drummer, told the band that she would "begin" and begin a new one in her life in January 2008. On December 31, 2007, Peters' last concert with Skillet was held on December 31, 2007. However, she took the time to instruct Skillet's next drummer, Jen Ledger, during the 2007 Christmas season.

Comatose Comes Alive was released on October 21, 2008; a CD/DVD set of the band's Live recordings of the band's May 9, 2008, concert in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was on the Gospel Music Channel on December 5, 2008. Comatose Comes Alive CD featured "Live Free or Let Me Die" as a single on its own, as well as five acoustic tracks, which customers could download by inserting the CD in their computer.

By the RIAA on November 3, 2009 and May 20, 2016, respectively, the Comatose album was rated Gold and Platinum in terms of sales.

Awake, Skillet's seventh album, features twelve songs and was released on August 25, 2009. It was ranked at No. 1 on the charts. In its first week, Billboard's top 200 top 200 saw around 68,000 units. On July 14, 2009, "Monster" was released as a single. John Cooper said that "Hero" was not the album's lead single, contrary to popular belief. However, it was unveiled in March 2010 as a single unit. In addition, they've released a Deluxe Version with the songs "Dead Inside" and "Would It Matter," as well as the original, radio edit of "Monster" that does not have the distorted growl as in the single and CD. On one of their most popular podcasts, a remix of "Monster" was included. In the episode "Jason: The Pretty Bully" on MTV's Bully Beatdown, the song "Hero" was used in the publicizing of the first football game of the 2009 NFL season between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans, and the song "Monster" was included in the episode "Jason: The Pretty Bully." "Monster" was the theme tune for WWE Hell in a Cell, while "Hero" was the theme tune for WWE Tribute to the Troops and Royal Rumble 2010, as well as both songs being included on the WWE official soundtrack for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010: "Monster" will also be the AHL team's name for the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland, Ohio, who were playing in the player introductions and after a Lake Erie goal, as the opening theme of the Fresno Monsters of Fresno, California. During the 2009 season, Raycom Sports' "Monster" debuted on many ACC football games. "Monster" was released in the first week of April 2010 in Rock Band 2's first week as a top-charting Christian album on the Billboard 200 with Underoath's 2006 release The Altar and the Door as both three albums debuted at No. 2 As the first week of April 2010, it tied for the highest-charging Christian album on the Billboard 200. 2.

Skillet was nominated for six Dove Awards for the 41st Annual GMA Dove Awards. Awake was awarded gold on July 2, 2010. Ardent also published The Beginnings, a compilation of their songs from 1996 to 2001, which was released in 2010. Skillet released an iTunes session EP on November 12 featuring songs from Comatose and Awake. A day later, "Monster" had been rated gold.

Skillet's long-time lead guitarist Ben Kasica will be leaving the band on February 14, 2011. Kasica has been with the band for ten years, contributing to the compilation Alien Youth, Collide, Comatose, and Awake, as well as the live album Comatose Comes Alive. On March 20, he appeared at what was supposed to be his last concert with the band, but he reformed and went on touring until a new guitarist was ready. Seth Morrison replaced Kasica as the lead guitarist on April 16, and Skillet now tours full-time.

In early March 2011, Skillet revealed the release of Awake and Remixed EPs. The remixes were mainly produced by Korey Cooper and Ben Kasica. Skillet unveiled the album's artwork on March 2, 2011. According to John Cooper, the idea was born when Korey Cooper and Ben Kasica remixed the song Monster for their famous podcast. On March 22, the four-song EP was released.

Awake was nominated for and received the "Top Christian Album" Award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2011, and the track "Awake and Alive" was announced to be on the Transformers: Dark of the Moon Soundtrack in May 2011.

On June 21, 2011, John John posted on Twitter that the band rehearsed new music for the first time and that they are gearing up for a new album. John Cooper, during a question and answer session prior to a concert, announced that they would have a new record in January/February 2012. The band was then set to headline the Winter Jam Tour, but it was then announced that they would not be able to make the most of the Winter Jam Tour. They planned to enter the studio at the end of the Winter Jam eastern tour, about in May, in late 2012.

John Cooper referred to the new album as "a roller coaster ride" in an interview with CCM Magazine. "We have aggressive tracks, artists, and musical tracks, which is a new territory for Skillet." A couple songs are classic American heartland anthems, while a few songs on Skillet are signature symphonic-classical rock Skillet. Guitars are filthy and edgier, with complete shredding solos by Seth." "Salvation" was one of the songs discussed in the interview.

In a talk in Beaumont, Texas, John Cooper announced that the new album, Rise, would be out in May 2013, but that it would be released on June 25, 2013. In an interview with NoiseCabin, John Cooper said that the first single and music video will be released by late April. On April 23, 2013, the album's first single, "Sick of It," will be released to American Rock radio. The first single, "Sick of It," would be announced later this year. During the first week of the release, the album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top Rock Chart and Christian Album charts, with 60,000 copies in the United States alone. Rise was rated Gold by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIAA) on July 12, 2016. On June 21, 2013, the band unveiled a deluxe edition of the album.

On the airing of Conan on July 11, 2013, the band performed the title track off Rise.
