Sergio Canales Madrazo (Spanish pronunciation: [xjo kanalez mao]; born 16 February 1991) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Real Betis and the Spain national team.
He joined Real Madrid as a 19-year-old boy in January but the club didn't have a 19-year-old, but the team lost after just one season. He continued to play, including in La Liga, Valencia, Real Sociedad, and Betis.
Canales earned 39 caps for Spain at the youth level, winning the 2013 European Championships with the under-21 team. In 2019, he made his senior debut.

Club career
Canales was born in Santander, Cantabria, and was a descendant of hometown Racing de Santander's youth ranks. Deportivo de La Corua acquired 50% of his playing rights in 2006 as part of the contract that culminated in Pedro Munitis' return to Racing with Dudu Aouate and Antonio Tomás moving in the opposite direction.
Canales made his first-team debut on September 18, 2008, against FC Honka of Finland, a UEFA Cup home tie, winning 1–0. About two weeks after being in La Liga for the first time, with the same result occurring in CA Osasuna.
Canales scored twice against RCD Espanyol in a 4–0 away win on December 6, 2009, repeating the feat at Sevilla FC on January 9, 2010 (2–1 at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium), earning Player of the match honors in the latter game. As Racing drew at Real Valladolid 1–1, he also found the net, and his team barely escaped relegation with six goals and four assists, largely because of his teammates' temporary absence.
Real Madrid reported on February 12, 2010, that Canales had signed a six-year contract for a fee that was supposed to be about €4.5 million in incentives. In a 3–2 friendly win over Club América on August, he made his debut on August 4th, scoring a goal. In a 0–0 draw against RCD Mallorca on August 29, he made his first league appearance.
Canales' only year with the club, which included three appearances in the Copa del Rey's victorious run, saw 518 minutes of action.

International career
Canales was able to support Spain's under-17 team win the UEFA European Championship in Istanbul in 2008. He made his under-21 debut in his first two games at age 19, scoring twice.
Canales was later named in the squad for the 2009 European Under-19 Championships, a subpoena. Following a 3–1 victory over England in the semi-finals and scoring one goal in the same category the previous year, he represented the country at the European Championships, winning the final and scoring one goal.
Canales was selected to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, playing four out of five games for the national team (three starts) in an eventual penalty shootout quarter-final exit. He appeared in the 2013 European Championship Under-21 qualification, scoring three times, including a brace against Georgia; despite being called in the squad for the finals in Israel, Spain lost the trophy after picking an injury in the first group match against Russia – Spain defeated Russia.
Canales was called up by full manager Luis Enrique for two UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Norway and Malta on March 15, 2019. In the 2–1 victory over Dani Ceballos, he made his debut eight days later as a 74th-minute substitute.
