The 1997 financial crisis blasted NTI Resources Ltd and led to its administration, leaving him homeless.

He co-founded PT in 1997. Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, a high school friend, joined Recapital Advisors with his High School colleague. Edwin Soeryadjaya, the son of William Soerjadjaja, co-founded Saratoga Capital the following year. Both companies are still flourishing today. According to Forbes magazine, he grew his businesses by purchasing a majority (51%) stake in Mandala Airlines in May 2011. According to Forbes, he was ranked as the 47th richest man in Indonesia in 2013.

Although he denies that he evaded taxes or broke the rules, his name appeared on the list of Panama Papers in 2016.

In mid-2015, he decided to leave the corporate world and enter politics. He officially resigned from various roles in 16 Saratoga and Recapital's subsidiaries from April to July 2015. After Prabowo, he rose to the second highest position in the Gerindra party as vice chairman of the board of supervisors. His name was first considered by Gerindra to be nominated in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Many volunteer community service organizations began to emerge in 2015, including "Sahabat Sandiaga Uno" (Friends of Sandiaga Uno or SSU). He began traveling around Jakarta, visiting various places. Sandiaga Uno began to travel to various locations in Jakarta in early 2016. For the 6-month period from February to August 2016, we're visiting up to 7 different countries a day. As reports leaked of the desire of seven political parties to form a grand coalition in August 2016, the rumors of his candidacy soared.

Following the dissolution of the ruling PDI-P party, which threw its weight behind incumbent governor Ahok, Golkar, Hanura, and Nasdem, this aspiration was not fulfilled. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has been invited by the Democratic Party, PAN, PKB, and PPP to be nomininate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) for the position.

Gerindra and PKS have agreed to remain in the coalition, selecting former Education Minister Anies Baswedan as their candidate and Sandiaga Uno as their running mate. Sandi said he had suggested Baswedan to Prabowo because he felt that Baswedan would be more suitable for the role.

Following his election, which an editorial characterized as "the most polarizing and most divisive the country has ever seen in Indonesian political history," and Ahok's detention, he was appointed deputy governor on October 16, 2017.

He was accused of paying opposition parties PAN and PKS Rp 500 billion (US$35 million) per year to endorse him as Prabowo Subianto's vice presidential nominee in 2018. Despite that, he resigned from his position to run in the 2018 election on August 10. The resignation was announced on September 18, 2018.

Sandiaga did not hold office until he was appointed Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy in 2020 after Prabowo's defeat in the 2019 election.

Sandiaga Uno was named as a "distinguished research professor in residence" at George Washington University, according to several reports in Indonesia. However, he had already denied it, claiming that his appointment for the position was primarily for his contributions to entrepreneur studies rather than teaching entrepreneurship.
