Dov Charney Life

Dov Charney (born January 31, 1969) is a Canadian businessman who works in finance.

He is best known for founding American Apparel, where he served as the CEO from 1989 to 2014.

Los Angeles Apparel, a vertically integrated clothing firm, was later founded by him.

He is also a vocal advocate for asylum reform in the United States through the Legalize LA campaign, which was supported by American Apparel.

Early life

Charney was born in Montreal, Quebec, on January 31, 1969. His father is an engineer and his mother is an artist. Charney is the nephew of architect Moshe Safdie. Charney is dyslexic and was diagnosed with ADD in kindergarten.

He attended Choate Rosemary Hall, a private boarding school in Connecticut, and St. George's School of Montreal. Charney said he was heavily influenced by both Montreal culture and his own Jewish roots.

Charney began exporting Hanes and Fruit of the Loom t-shirts from the United States to his Canadian friends. In an interview with Vice, he recalled smuggling the shirts on Amtrak trains from New York to Montreal.

Personal life

Charney lives in Garbutt House, a historic mansion built by Frank Garbutt, an early movie pioneer and industrialist. Due to Garbutt's fear of fire, the house is mainly made out of concrete. The house is often used as a dormitory for out-of-town workers who work at the company's headquarters. During his time at American Apparel Charney, he was absorbed with work, often sleeping in his office, leaving no room between his personal and work life.
