Salvador Cabas Ortega (born 5 August 1980) is a Paraguayan football striker. Cabas played for Club 12 de Octubre, Guaran, Audax Italiano, Chiapas, Club América, GC General Caballero, Tanabi Esporte Clube, and Independiente F.B.C.

He appeared in Paraguay, Chile, Mexico, and Brazil during his football career. Cabas was also a member of the Paraguay national football team from 2004 to 2010, scoring 10 goals in 44 appearances and representing in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2007 Copa América.

Cabas was the leading goal scorer in the 2007 and 2008 Copa Libertadores tournaments.

He was named both Paraguayan Footballer of the Year and South American Footballer of the Year in 2007.

Cabas had also been a top-scorer in Chile and Mexico.

He was known for his outstanding heading, accurate shooting in tight spaces, and a combination of technique, wealth, and positional sense.

He returned to football and played in a tribute match for him between Paraguay's national team and Club América sixteen months after the assault.

Career

Cabas began his career at Club 12 de Octubre, where he was promoted to the first division by then-coach Alicio Solalinde, who scored 17 goals in his first season. He went to Guaran, where he spent a brief period before heading to Audax Italiano of Chile. In the 2003 Apertura tournament of the Chilean Prime Minister, Robert Capas, 18 goals were scored and he was the top goalcorer.

He moved to Chiapas, Mexico, from Audax Italiano, shortly after the Mexican 2003 Apertura tournament. Cabaas played in 18 games for the team this season, scoring five goals. However, he came into his own in the 2004 Clausura, scoring 15 goals in 20 games for the club. In the 2004 Apertura, he would lead the team in goals, with eight in 16 games.

Following the 2006 season, in which Cabas won his first goalscoring crown in the Mexican League, he attracted the attention of Club América, one of the country's most important clubs, and was signed by the Mexico City squad prior to the 2006 season.

Cabas became the top-scoring scorer in 2007 and the Mexican Primera División, with 19 goals in the first half of the year. He started the year with a single goal in the North American SuperLiga, then scored 4 more goals in the 2007 Copa Sudamericana, raising his year's total with the team to 33 goals. He was named best footballer of the Year and South American Footballer of the Year for his outstanding results in 2007.

Cabas has started where he left off in 2007. In the 2008 InterLiga, he scored 8 goals (in which he became the top scorer for the second time) and has scored 6 more goals in the Mexican Primera División. He scored six goals in the Mexican Primera División in the second half of the year, taking his total number to 23 goals with the club to 23 goals.

Cabas started 2009 by scoring his first goal in the 2009 InterLiga and winning 13 more goals in the Mexican Primera División. He then scored 12 goals in the Mexican Primera División in the second half of the year. Year's goal: 26 goals for the year. He scored two goals against Santos Laguna on January 18, taking his total number to 100 goals in the Mexican Primera División to 100.

In 2010, Cabas also started the year scoring in the 2010 InterLiga, scoring four times. He scored two goals in the two games he played in the 2010 Bicentenario. In a 2–0 loss against Morelia on January 24, 2010, his last game before being shot was on January 24, 2010.

Cabas was shot in the head inside Mexico City's "Bar Bar" nightclub on January 25, 2010 at 5:00 a.m. The assault took place in the bathroom of Cabas and a crowd of the Beltrán-Leyva Drug-Cartel's José Balderas Garza, alias "JJ," who fired him, according to official police reports.

During the early hours of January 25, 2010, Cabas received medical attention. Later in the day, he was admitted to a craniotomy, but doctors decided it was too risky to proceed, and the bullet was not extracted. Cabas left intensive care in late February and was hoping to fully recover in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but the final Paraphrase squad was not selected for the final Paraguay squad. Doctors treating Cabas have referred to their recovery so far as "tremendous." However, it has been revealed that he does have short-term memory loss and will not recover for another one to three years. On March 12, 2010, he gave his first interview in honor of all the people who prayed for him. Cabas' version of the 2013 FIFA World Cup revealed that the assault occurred so that he would not participate in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and that Paraguay will not be crowned champions of the competition.

Cabas assaulted the guy, asking him, 'What are you waiting for?' after a brief period of time, the man pulled the trigger on Caba's forehead, and Cabas fired his forehead. He also stated that right after being shot, he had a near-death experience, where he felt he went straight to heaven and told God, who touched him on his forehead, where Cabas had been shot, and that he continued to life and assist those in need.

Cabas signed a three-division club in Paraguay on January 20, 2012, two years after the assault. He made his return to football in the club's 2–0 victory over Martn Ledesma in the first round of the Primera B. Salvador's Second Division of Paraguay, where he will now compete on a regular basis. In a Liga MX match against Pumas, Cabas was invited to partake in a half-time memorial appearance for Chiapas. At halftime, the audience gave him a standing ovation. The Jaguares won the match 3–0 later.

Cabas announced his retirement from football on January 26, 2014, after receiving an invitation from Murciélagos FC in Mexico. Cabas had signed with Club 12 de Octubre, who had been promoted to the Paraguayan Primera División for the 2014 season, but it was announced on February 1, 2014, that it had been confirmed on February 1st. Caba's was supposed to debut against Cerro Portes in the first round of the 2014 Paraguayan Primera División season on February 16, 2014, but Cabayan Primera División season's lowest form was not included in the tournament. Cabas was out of shape and had been kicked out of the Torneo Apertura, according to Sologa, but the club's training sessions will continue to be active.

Cabas had agreed to a three-month deal with So Paulo Diviso (equivalent to the state fourth division) outfit Tanabi Esporte Clube, on March 17, 2014. Irineu Alves, the club's president, travelled from Brazil to Paraguay in order to finalize the deal, saying that Cabaas was a significant financial commitment for the club. Cabas made his debut for the club in a friendly against Gremio Barueri on May 18, 2014, which resulted in a 2–2 draw, with Cabas missing a penalty in the last minute.

Cabas announced on May 30th, 2014, that he had resigned due to not being able to maintain rhythm after being shot in the head in 2010.

Cabas was born out of retirement and joined Independiente Ftbol Club of Pedro Juan Caballero on June 27th. Cabas made his debut against former Prime Minister Albert In the Liga Deportiva Amamby of the Paraguayan Cuarta División, playing in the 35th minute of the second half, on June 29th.

International career

Cabas represented Paraguay's U17 team at the 1997 South American Under-17 Football Championship, scoring 3 goals. Cabas was selected in Paraguay's U20 team for the 1999 South American U-20 Championship, where he scored two goals. Cabaas was selected in the squad that included Roque Santa Cruz and Nelson Cuevas, qualifying for the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship.

During the 2006 World Cup qualification campaign, Cabas made his debut for the Paraguay national team. He was selected in the team for the tournament finals but did not participate.
