Early life
During the British Raj, Seth was born in Patna, Bihar, to a Hindu father and a Muslim mother. His father was a biochemistry professor at Patna Medical College. He studied at The Doon School and later did graduate studies in history at St Stephen's College. He honed his dramatic abilities at the Shakespeare Society before heading to England for further education. He studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 1965 and began working in British television and repertory theatre.

Seth was married to author Pepita Seth, but they separated in the late 1980s and divorced in 2004. Aftab Seth, the former Indian diplomat, is his brother.
Career
Seth appeared in Peter Brook's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which toured in 1972. In Richard Lester's Juggernaut (1974), Seth appeared in feature films. However, subsequent filmmakers only needed Seth for limited ethnic roles, causing his career to stall.
Seth, who died in 1977, Seth began acting and returned to India, where he served as a writer and editor of the India International Centre's quarterly journal. After Richard Attenborough asked Seth to play Jawaharlal Nehru in Gandhi (1982), he resigned from his position.
