Patrick Rory McGrath (born 17 March 1956), also known as Rory McGrath, is a British comedian, television presenter, and writer.

He rose to fame on the comedy show Who Dares Wins and spent many years as a regular panelist on the game show They Think It's All Over.

He appeared on Chelmsford 123 and appeared on the ITV reality show Sugar Free Farm.

Early life

McGrath was born in Redruth, Cornwall, England. He studied at Redruth Grammar School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from which he earned a lower second class diploma in modern languages.

Personal life

McGrath is married to Nicola. They met at Cambridge but married other people. She called him and they rekindled their relationship in 1995 after both their marriages were ended.

McGrath supports Arsenal, Celtic, and Plymouth Argyle. He and Peter Cook, a Tottenham supporter, used to have a friendly rivalry over their respective clubs. Tottenham had defeated Arsenal on the night that Cook died in January 1995. McGrath discovered out about his friend's death after struggling to get Cook's regular threatening phone call the next morning. McGrath, a Ralph McTell associate and fan, is a student and admirer. He contributed liner notes to Affairs of the Heart, a McTell compilation album.

Career

McGrath became a member of the Footlights while attending Cambridge and met Jimmy Mulville, with whom he wrote and performed. Frankie Howerd and Windsor Davies wrote BBC radio scripts for them after university. McGrath also co-wrote Black Cinderella Two Goes East with Clive Anderson for BBC Radio 2 in 1978. McGrath and Mulville went on to write for shows like Not the Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones, as part of the Injury Time (1980-1982) and the Channel 4 comedy sketch series Who Dares Wins. McGrath performed and appeared on Glompus Van De Hloed's Tales From The Crypt in 1981, alongside Andrew Sachs, Chrissy Roberts, Griff Rhys Jones, and Mel Smith, which was the source of the album.

McGrath co-founded Hat Trick Productions in 1986, alongside Jimmy Mulville and Denise O'Donoghue. Chelmsford 123 (1988 and 1990), which McGrath and Mulville wrote and performed, was an early production. He hosted Trivial Pursuit on BBC One in 1990, but Hat Trick was kicked out of 1992 because of not pulling his weight. McGrath had left his wife and two young children days before the confrontation. He served as a panelist on the BBC comedy sports quiz They Think It's All Over (1995–2006). He appeared on Rory's Commercial Breakdown (1997), where comedian advertisements from various countries were shown. He has produced two football DVDs, Own Goals and Gaffs, as well as The Premiership in 2002 and More Own Goals and Gaffs in 2003. McGrath appeared in a Sooty Show episode (Time Capsule) as a scuba diver who appeared from nowhere to prevent Matthew Corbett and Sooty from burying their time capsule.

McGrath appeared in the BBC's Three Men in a Boat series from 2006-2011, as Dara Bruton and Griff Rhys Jones. The trio was seen rowing up the River Thames (similar to Jerome K. Jerome's 1889 book Three Men in a Boat), sailing from London to Scilly for a sailing yacht race, borrowing several vessels from Plymouth to the Isles of Scilly, enjoying the Irish canals and rivers as a result of the challenge between Briain and Rhys Jones (who had each purchased a boat but refused to give it up to use the other's), and the threesomes were on the Nanta He also appeared on Industrial Revelations: Best of British Engineering, series 5, first broadcast in 2008.

Bearded Tit – Confessions of a Birdwatcher, Ebury Press' first book, was released on May 1st, 2008, and BBC Radio 4 serialized it.

McGrath co-starred in a four-part television series with British comedian Paddy McGuinness, which first aired in August 2008, on Channel 5's Great British Adventure. "On a trip to discover Britain's sporting heritage by uncovering the unspoken life of its towns and villages," McGuinness and McGrath wrote. Various cane sports, such as cheese rolling, toe wrestling, and swamp soccer were chronicled in the series. McGrath's Pub Dig for History was released in 2011. He produced two series of The Lakes for ITV, and in 2016, he appeared in the Sugar Free Farm, an ITV program that saw him go sugar free for two weeks.
