Russell Joseph Howard (born 23 March 1980) is an English comedian, television presenter, and actor best known for his TV appearances on Russell Howard's Good News and The Russell Howard Hour, as well as his appearances on the topical panel television program Mock the Week.

At the 2006 Chortle Awards, he received "Best Compère" and was nominated for an if.comedy award for his 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe performance.

Humourists Lee Evans, Richard Pryor, and Frank Skinner were among influences on Howard.

Early life

Howard Howard Howard was born in Bath to Dave and Ninette Howard. Kerry and Daniel, his younger brother, were born 1982. Daniel has epilepsy, to which Howard often refers to during his appearance.

Howard attended Bedford Modern School, Perins School in New Alresford and Alton College. He later studied economics at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

Personal life

When Howard's career began, he took up residence in Leamington Spa. Howard and his partner, Cerys, a dentist, and their dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Archie, now live in Camden, London. Howard revealed on Christmas Day 2018 that he would be marrying in 2019; the wedding took place in June 2019.

On November 12, 2009, Howard appeared at Friends of the Earth's LIVEstock comedy and music festival at the Hammersmith Apollo in support of the Green Campaign's Food Chain Campaign for planet-friendly farming.

Howard has said he is "highly concerned" about football and has rooted Liverpool since he was ten years old. In 2010, he said, "I still go down the pub and play football with my mates."

Howard ran the London Marathon for the first time in April 2010, raising funds for Epilepsy Society with both his brother and sister. He completed the 26-mile course in 4 hours and 15 minutes, beating his target time of 5 hours. To date, sponsorship has raised more than £7,000.

David Walliams, Jimmy Carr, Fearne Cotton, Miranda Hart, Patrick Kielty, and Davina McCall were among those taking part in the BT Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride in 2010. In four days, they cycled from John o' Groats in Scotland to Land's End in England, hoping to raise £1 million.

Howard broke his left hand while trying to do press ups on a stunt chair in November 2011.

Russell was named "Weird Crush of the Year 2013" by Heat Magazine, with his companion and former flatmate Jon Richardson coming in second.

In 2004, BBC Radio 1 had invited him to write, sing, and perform on the comedy film The Milk Run. Howard has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Banter (hosted by Andrew Collins) and Political Animal (hosted by Andrew Collins).

Howard was a regular panelist on Mock the Week up until 2010. He has also appeared on 8 out of ten Cats, Will I Lie to You?, Live at the Apollo, The Unknown Policeman's Ball 2008, The Playground's Law and Never Mind the Buzzcocks (Series 18, Episode 2 and Episode 4, series 20).

Howard frequently performed with others from the Chocolate Milk Gang, a group of comedians who often collaborated and performed with one another, including Daniel Kitson, John Oliver, David O'Doherty, and Alun Cochrane. Howard discusses Liverpool F.C.'s adoration of her.

He was one of many comedians selected from the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe that aired ten-minute spots on "Edinburgh and Beyond" television show, which was broadcast on Paramount Comedy 1 in the fall of 2006. The performance was shot at the Bloomsbury Theatre. He took over as compère of Al Murray's show from 2009 to 2010.

Russell co-hosted The Russell Howard Show on BBC Radio 6 Music from November 2006 to July 2008, with fellow comedian Jon Richardson in a Sunday morning slot previously hosted by Russell Brand. Until March 2010, the program stayed on air, without Howard. He has since revealed that his main reason for leaving the show was that he finds radio "strict" and "I gorge off the audience as a performer, but you can't judge a reaction on the radio."

Russell Howard's Good News, a comedy series aimed at under the age of 25, was hired to produce Russell Howard's Good News, a comedy series aimed at under 25s, for BBC Three. On October 22, 2009, the first episode of the series "best of" show and a Christmas Special were released. It's now become BBC Three's highest-ever rating entertainment show. He provided his take on the week's most important news as well as highlighting some of the more light-hearted stories of the week. Two more series of the show were developed, with the second series debuting on March 25, 2010. On BBC Three, a seventh series debuted on September 27, 2012. On BBC Three, series 8 debuted on April 25, 2013; in October 2014, BBC Two's new home, series 9.

On February 9, 2013, Russell Howard's Good News was named as the Best Ever BBC Three Show as part of the channel's tenth birthday celebrations.

Howard appeared on Conan's 3rd episode in the United States on August 3, 2011. Howard co-hosted the second episode of the 27th season of Never Mind the Buzzcocks on September 30, 2013.

Russell Howard's Stand Up Central, which airs on Comedy Central, ran from 2015 to 2016. Howard called Conservative MP Philip Davies on his BBC show, branding him a "arsehole," "wanker," and a "toad hypocrite" accusing the MP of filibustering (talking out a bill). Davies screamed on the grounds of "inaccuracy" and "misrepresentation" and "misrepresentation" and the BBC was compelled to publish "Davies did not personally use up all the time available for the discussion, and that nearly three hours remained after he sat down" in the BBC's Clarifications and Corrections section. Howard was also found to have misrepresented Davies' views on disabled people, and the BBC said "that the program did not fully reflect his views"; some disabled people and others were found to work for less than minimum wage, as if there were no such jobs." Davies' position was also misrepresented by the broadcaster, who also decided not to air the episode again due to their misrepresentation of the actor's identity. Davies' complaint was not escalated by the BBC Trust until recently.

Howard will write and appear in The Russell Howard Hour on Sky One in 2017, as part of a two-year contract with Sky, as a result of a two-year contract with Sky. On September 21, 2017, the series debuted on September 21, 2017.

On November 17, 2008, a show from his 2007 Adventures Tour was broadcast on DVD under the banner "Russell Howard Live." The show on the DVD was shot at The Bloomsbury Theatre.

Howard started performing Dingledodies in September 2008 and played various dates from September to December. Due to high demand, he postponed the tour twice as long as 2009 was the case. It sold more than 125,000 tickets, including three sold-out shows at the Hammersmith Apollo, as well as several major arenas, including Wembley Arena and Manchester's MEN Arena.
