Early life
Ronald David Mael was born in Culver City, California, on August 12, 1945. The Mael brothers grew up in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles' affluent beach suburb, with their father, Meyer Mael, who was a graphic designer and caricaturist, and their mother, Miriam (née Moskowitz), a librarian. Both Meyer and Miriam Polish immigrant families, Meyer of Austrian and Russian descent, and Miriam Polish; despite this, a source familiar with the brothers' 2021 documentary said they were "not raised, nor do they identify as Jewish," and that "nobody's ethnicity is mentioned in the film. The Mael brothers' initial inspiration came from their father's take them to the cinema as teenagers, where they developed a fascination with film, graphic arts, and narrative. Meyer died in Mael when he was 11 years old.
Both brothers were enrolled at UCLA after being educated at Palisades High School, and Ron took a course in cinema and graphic arts in 1963, while Russell concentrated on theatre arts and filmmaking from 1966 to 1968.
Personal life
Although the brothers' biographies chronicle an LA childhood in which they surfed and were both models for mail order catalogs, their personal lives are otherwise almost unknown. "Well, we're in good company with Bob Dylan," they replied. "We feel the less you know because it keeps the mythology and the image in a good shape." And when it comes to whether they have spouses or partners, they refused to reveal an example, insisting that "the haziness is more interesting than the truth."
