Rodrigo Reis Santoro (Portuguese pronunciation: [od:u 'hejs st.u]; born 22 August 1975) is a Brazilian actor. In the film 300 (2006) and its sequel 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), he is best known for his portrayal of Persian King Xerxes. Brainstorm (2001), Carandiru (2003), Love Actually (2004), Che (2008), I Love You Phillip Morris (2009), and Rio (2011) are three other notable films. He also appeared on the television show Lost, starring Paulo, and on HBO's Westworld (2016–2020) as Hector Escaton.
Early life
Santoro was born in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Spain, to Francesco Santoro, an Italian engineer with roots in Paola, Province of Cosenza, Calabria, and Maria José Reis, a Brazilian artist of Portuguese originstry.
Personal life
Since 2013, Santoro has been in a relationship with Brazilian actress Mel Fronckowiak. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Nina, on May 22nd.
Career
Santoro, an undergraduate at PUC-Rio, recalls visiting the Actor's Workshop of Rede Globo in 1993. He continued to appear in many of Globo's television series, such as Olho (1993), Pátria Minha (1994), Explode Coraço (1995), and Mulheres Apaixo (2004), as well as the miniseries Hilda Furaco (1999) in the role of a priest. In the Brazilian-dubbed versions, Santoro also played the titular character in Stuart Little and its sequel.
His first major role in a film project came in 2001, with Brazilian director Las Bodansky's Bicho de Sete Cabeças (Brainstorm). He received a standing ovation from the audience at the end of the film. He went on to win the festival's best actor award. After Bicho, his reputation as an actor had been solidified, and he was selected as the male lead in Abril Despedaçado (Behind the Sun), one of the nominees for best foreign film in the 2002 Golden Globe Awards. Hector Babenco's 2003 film Carandiru played Lady Di, a transgender prisoner.
After being mesmerized by his appearance in Bicho de Sete Cabeças, Canadian director Robert Allan Ackerman signed Santoro for his TV series The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. Ackerman called Santoro's father because Santoro did not have an agent in North America. He spent two months filming in Rome with Helen Mirren and Anne Bancroft, two of Rome's most popular actors. Columbia Pictures had a call shortly after finishing shooting for Mrs. Stone, a part of Charlie's Angels: Complete Throttle. His career in Hollywood began with this role. In the romantic comedy Love Actually, which also stars Colin Firth, Lcia Moniz, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, and Rowan Atkinson, he played Karl, an enigmatic chief designer and Laura Linney's love interest.
Santoro began working in advertising as he appeared in a commercial campaign with Gisele Bündchen in 2002. In No. 1, he starred as the male lead. 5 The Film, a three-minute commercial for Chanel directed by Baz Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman in 2004.
Santoro was a survivor of the Oceanic Flight 815 disaster in 2006 and a part of the ABC television series Lost as Paulo, a survivor of the Pacific Flight 815 disaster. In the episode "Exposé," his character was killed off, and his first appearance was in the episode "Further Instructions." In the Brazilian-dubbed version of the film, he also portrayed the character.
In Zack Snyder's film 300 (2006), based on the Frank Miller comic of the same name, Santoro was depicted as Persian emperor Xerxes. Several special needs were included in the work, including intense training for the physical fitness of the body (Santoro had previously lost 24 pounds (11 kg) to appear in a Brazilian miniseries), extensive CGI reconstruction of Santoro's body hair removal, first by waxing and then shaving, which was painful. His eyebrows were preserved, but not cut off, rather than being shaved. Santoro was the first Brazilian actor nominated for the MTV Movie Awards in the category of Best Villain for his role in 300. He did not win, however, with the award going to Jack Nicholson for The Departed.
Santoro co-starred in Heleno, the late footballer, in the 2012 film Heleno before playing Garriga in the Will Smith drama film Focus (2015).
