Roddy Piper Life

Roderick George Toombs (April 17, 1954 – July 31, 2015), also known by his ring name "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, was a Canadian professional wrestler and actor. Piper was best known to international audiences for his participation in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) between 1984 and 2000.

Despite being a Canadian, he was incorrectly billed as coming from Glasgow and was known for his distinctive kilt and bagpipe entrance music.

Piper earned the nicknames "Rowdy" and "Hot Rod" by displaying his trademark "Scottish" rage, spontaneity, and quick wit.

Piper is "considered by many to be the best (or villain) wrestler ever" at a variety of PPV shows, including the WWF and WCW's respective premier annual events, WrestleMania and Starrcade, according to The Daily Telegraph.

He has won 34 championships and hosted "Piper's Pit," a WWF/E interview segment that aided in a number of feuds.

Piper's biggest rival was Hulk Hogan: their mid-1980s feud, as well as "Captain" Lou Albano and singer Cyndi Lauper, is considered to have started "Rock 'n' Wrestling."

Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005, most notably in the lead role of John Nada in 1988's cult classic They Live and a recurring appearance as a defunct professional wrestler in Philadelphia's It's Always Sunny.

He is also well-known for his role in Hell Comes to Frogtown as the character Sam Hell.

Early life

Roderick George Toombs was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on April 17, 1954, the son of Eileen (née Anderson) and Stanley Baird Toombs. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and attended Windsor Park Collegiate. When his father was a police officer with the CN Rail Police (Canadian National Railway), they lived in The Pas, Manitoba. Toombs left home and remained in youth hostels after being kicked out of junior high for having a switchblade in class and falling out with his father. He began working at odd hours at local gyms, as well as running errands for several professional wrestlers. He became an expert at playing the bagpipes as a youth, but he often said he was uncertain where he obtained them. Cam Connor, Connor's childhood (and lifelong) best friend, was an ex-NHL player.

Personal life

From 1982 to his death in 2015, Toombs and his partner, Kitty Jo Dittrich, were married. They had four children. At the All Out pay-per-view, his daughter Teal Piper made her professional wrestling debut for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in August 2019. It was revealed shortly after that that she had signed a deal with Women of Wrestling (WOW).

On November 27, 2006, it was announced on WWE.com that Toombs had Hodgkin's lymphoma; he completed radiation therapy on January 15, 2007. On Toombs' official website, he expressed appreciation to all his followers and said that if the fans hadn't selected him as Ric Flair's partner at Cyber Sunday, he would not have been admitted to the hospital and diagnosed as having his disease in time.

A video of Toombs smoking marijuana and receiving a blow from a bong at the annual Gathering of the Juggalos in November 2008 was posted on the internet in November 2008, but the Juggalos later admitted that medicinal marijuana use helped to alleviate cancer-related pains. This was reiterated on Jim Ross' blog.

Toombs claimed to be a cousin of Bret Hart, which would make him a cousin of the Hart wrestling family. This was once used as a trivia question on Raw. Hart also said that Toombs was the only wrestler to visit him in the hospital after his stroke. Bruce Hart has claimed that they were second cousins.

Roddy Piper Career

Professional wrestling career

Piper was an amateur wrestler before he began to wrestle as a professional wrestler. He claimed to have won the Golden Gloves boxing championship, but their lists of champions didn't include any of his names. Gene LeBell gave him a black belt in Judo. He began wrestling under the care of promoter Al Tomko in Canada, his first match involving "midget wrestlers" in front of a lumberjack audience in Churchill, Manitoba. He soon began earning money wrestling while still attending college. Larry Hennig of the American Wrestling Association was his first match in a notable organization (AWA). As he was handing out dandelions, his friends played the bagpipes at his entrance; in the meantime, the ring announcer had to say something, but only Roddy knew was Roddy. "Ladies and gentlemen, here comes Roddy the piper," he said after hearing the pipe band. The name "Roddy Piper" was born as a result of this. Piper was a jobber in the American Wrestling Association (AWA), the NWA Central States territory surrounding Kansas City, and the Eastern Sports Association in the Maritimes from 1973 to 1975. He served in Texas for Paul Boesch's NWA Houston Wrestling promotion, as well as in Dallas for Fritz Von Erich's Big Time Rasslin.

Piper was a leading villain for Mike and Gene LeBell's NWA Hollywood Wrestling in late 1975 and early 1976. In 1977-78, he began to work with Roy Shire's NWA San Francisco Wrestling, in addition to being employed in the Los Angeles office, where Piper developed his Rowdy appearance. During this period, he continued to make continual insults directed at the Mexican people of the area; he later promised to repent by playing the Mexican national anthem on his bagpipes, but the fans were enraged even more by playing "La Cucaracha" instead, which caused a riot. Piper has also managed a large number of wrestlers in California.

Piper and Chavo Guerrero Sr. and his father, Gory Guerrero, are rivals in the Los Angeles area. In several matches for the Jules Strongbow Memorial Scientific Trophy, Piper and Chavo Guerrero faced each other. Piper also defeated Chavo for the Americas Heavyweight Championships. Piper lost a hair match and had his head shaved during the feud. Piper appeared in several loser leave town matches and was eventually barred from entering the territory. He also appeared in the territory as The Masked Canadian. Piper, the Masked Canadian, appeared in his first televised match as The Masked Canadian, Piper, teamed with Chavo in a match against Black Gordman and Goliath for the Americas Tag Team Championship. Piper and Guerrero both lost the match and met each other two days later, with Piper defeating Guerrero in the Americas Heavyweight Championships. Piper battled as the Masked Canadian for many months before being unveiled by Hector Guerrero.

Piper's California promotions gained even more traction in Don Owen's Portland-based Pacific Northwest territory by late 1978 to 1979. Tim Brooks and Rick Martel were teamed up with him to win the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championship. Piper also won the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship, defeating both Lord Jonathan Boyd and "Playboy" Buddy Rose.

Piper first returned to Mid-Atlantic, defeating Jack Brisco for the Mid-Atlantic title in the early 1980s. Ric Flair was also defeated for the US belt, which turned into a feud. Piper competed with Bob Armstrong, Dick Slater, and Tommy Rich from 1981 to 1982 and feuded with them. Piper became a fan favorite during the summer of 1982 after knocking out Don Muraco and Ole Anderson to save broadcast partner Gordon Solie from Muraco, who had grown impatient with Solie's tactics. Gerald W. Morton and George M. O'Brien portrayed the change: "the drama finally played out on television when Don Muraco, one of his [Piper's] hired assassins, yelled the commentator Gordon Solie's] raged against commentator Gordon Solie. Piper unleashed his Scottish fury on Muraco after seeing Solie's pain. He slew of villains in the week that followed, as Achilles avenging Patroklas. Fans chanted his name during his games."

Piper was suspended in 1982 after arriving late for a match. He stayed in Puerto Rico for a month and was booked by Jim Barnett shortly after. Piper returned to Atlanta in 1983 to assist Tommy Rich during his rivalry with Buzz Sawyer. Piper eventually returned to Jim Crockett Promotions. Piper and Sgt feuded as a fan favorite. Greg Valentine, Slaughter, Ric Flair, and Slaughter. At the first Starrcade, Piper's rivalry with Valentine culminated in a dog collar match. During the match with the collar's chain, Valentine snapped Piper's left eardrum, causing Piper to lose 5–75% of his hearing permanently. This year was dubbed "The Year of the Ear."

Piper wrestled five matches with the WWF under Vince McMahon Sr. in 1979 at Madison Square Garden, before joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) full time in 1984. He beat Frankie Williams in his first match in WWF on January 22. Freddie Blassie stuffed Piper's bagpipes with toilet paper before one match so they would not play in front of the Garden crowd.

Vince McMahon, the WWF's founder, contacted Piper, who insisted on terminating his deal with Jim Crockett before beginning his WWF career in 1984. Piper debuted in the WWF as a leader, alongside "Dr. D" David Schultz and "Mr. Gregor." Paul Orndorff is a fantastic, but Piper's tenure as a manager ended abruptly, and he began wrestling full time. He was given his own interview segment on Championship Wrestling and Wrestling at the Chase in 1984, beginning in 1987. Piper insulted Jimmy Snuka's Polynesian roots and assaulted Snuka by smashing him over the head with a coconut during one Piper's Pit. During a Piper's Pit segment, Piper also insulted Bruno Sammartino, resulting in a rivalry that culminated in a brawl at the Boston Garden, which Piper lost.

Piper's next big storyline was with Hulk Hogan and also involved pop singer Cyndi Lauper. The War to Settle the Score, MTV's 1985 documentary, contained a main-event match between Piper and Hogan for the WWF championship. Lauper, Captain Lou Albano, and Mr. T. Orndorff were accompanied by Hogan during the first WrestleMania, pitting Paul Orndorff and his former boss Piper against Hogan and Mr. T. Orndorff against Hogan and Hogan. Piper's bodyguard "Cowboy" Bob Orton interfered and mistakenly hit Orndorff instead of Hogan. Piper recalled how he had to keep Mr. T busy to cover Mr. T's lack of wrestling experience from being seen by the fans. Piper and Mr. T's real-life friendship became dysfunctional, leading to the inevitable conclusion that they would be placed on a parody with one another on-screen. In 1986, Piper faced Mr. T in a boxing match at WrestleMania 2, which Piper lost by disqualification after bodyslamming Mr. T.

Piper returned as a face after a leave of absence from the WWF, against A. J. Petrucci on August 23, 1986. The returning Piper's Pit segment was replaced by The Flower Shop, a segment hosted by Adrian Adonis, who had already recruited Piper's former bodyguard Orton as part of the storyline. Piper spent weeks crashing Adonis' show and trading insults, resulting in a "showdown" between the two segments that culminated in Piper's face turn and the installation of a more permanent Piper's Pit set. Piper stormed Adonis' exhibition and smashed it with a baseball bat in reaction. This resulted in their Hair vs. Scientific contest. WrestleMania III, which was billed as Piper's retirement match from wrestling before he left to become a full-time actor, was a hair match. Piper won the competition.

Piper's Pit in early 1987 provided the back-up to Andre the Giant's heel turn and chastising Piper's old foe, Hulk Hogan, for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania III, with Hogan eventually accepting the challenge.

Piper recovered from a two-year absence in 1989. Although WrestleMania V was billed as his return, he made his first appearance in Denver, CO on March 19 as he hosted a live Piper's Pit and interviewed Brother Love. With another live Piper's Pit two weeks later, he made his official return to a smoking Morton Downey Jr. with a fire extinguisher. On May 12, he returned to the ring, substituting Jake Roberts and pinning Ted DiBiase at a house show in Los Angeles. Piper would win multiple more victories against DiBiase that month, as well as in June against Randy Savage.

Piper co-hosted Prime Time Wrestling from August 17, 1989, to December 25, 1989, with Gorilla Monsoon, "Ravishing" Rick Rude, and Brother Love, he will reprise the role in 1991. Piper returned to the ring when he interfered in Rude's Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship defense against The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam, costing Rude the title. Piper would meet Rude in numerous matches throughout the house show tours, including steel cage and lumberjack matches, and the feud was heavily promoted on television. The feud was so popular that a Survivor Series match was built around it, causing both men to captain a squad and then be ruled out by countout after their brawl, although Rude's team would win the game. When it came to a stipulation that Piper defeated Rude, Heenan would have to dress as Santa Clause for an episode of Prime Time, the feud came to a head. Piper will win the majority of their matches through 89-90, including one over Bobby Heenan, and the feud will continue into March 1990. He then feuded with Bad News Brown, who was furious at being kicked out of by Piper at the 1990 Royal Rumble. Brown will go on to mock Piper for wearing a "skirt." Piper cut a promo against his opponent Bad News Brown before the match, painted black, and later wrestled Bad News when painted this way. This blackface performance would be considered offensive behind the scenes by Bad News. Despite attempts to the contrary, the match will result in a Double Count Out, with the issue between the two teams never being resolved. According to a behind-the-scenes interview, neither man was able to lose to the other. In 1991, he favors Virgil in his war against "The Million Dollar Man" (Ted DiBiase). Piper was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1991, but they were still present at their matches in WrestleMania VII and SummerSlam. He revived his rivalry with Ric Flair, winning the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship for the first time and only. At WrestleMania VIII, he lost it shortly after to Bret Hart. Piper made a few appearances at television tapings for Wrestling Challenge and WWF Superstars following his title loss to Hart. Two Piper's Pit segments were recorded, two with Steve Lombardi and two with Shawn Michaels. Piper's departure from the WWF was the reason that none aired. At SummerSlam, he made his return to the bagpipes.

In 1994, Bret Hart and Yokozuna met as guest referee for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship match between Bret Hart and Yokozuna. Commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler remarked that he looved Piper and began to mock Piper on King's Court segment, culminating with Lawler bringing out a young, skinny impersonator in a Piper T-shirt and kilt, compelled him to kiss his feet during the match, resulting in Lawler bringing out a young, skinny impersonator, requiring him to kiss his feet. Piper enraged, he accepted to face Lawler at the King of the Ring, where Piper emerged victorious. Piper debuted as a fan favorite, and he's continued to lift his face by pledging a portion of his money from the fight with Lawler to a children's hospital in Ontario. Piper introduced "The Bottom Line," a weekly segment on All-American Wrestling, where he addressed various events in the WWF, as well as his rivalry with Lawler in spring 1994. Piper's segment aired regularly until 1994, when Piper will be back in the United States.

Since leaving the WWF, he appeared in 1995 at WrestleMania XI, briefly in a referee role, for Hart and Bob Backlund's submission-only match. Piper hosted WWF pay-per-views for a short period of time, commenting on the matches that had just occurred before disengaging a few months later.

Piper appeared on Monday Night RAW as the interim WWF President after Gorilla Monsoon was forced to take a leave of absence as a result of a Vain attack. He made his first match appearance in almost two years on February 24 at a house show in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Piper beat The 1-2-3 Kid after being a replacement for Razor Ramon when he was adamant. On house shows that month, he wrestled twice more against the Kid.

After a letter campaign submitted by supporters, Piper's first acts as president was to resurrect The Ultimate Warrior back to the WWF. Piper had fallen into the affections of Goldust. Piper, who has angered, said he would "make a man" out of Goldust at WrestleMania XII. The match, which was dubbed a "Hollywood Backlot Brawl," began in an alleyway behind the Arrowhead Pond, but Goldust jumped into his gold Cadillac and ran Piper over, eventually escaping (allegedly) onto Anaheim highways. Piper was looking for a new Ford Bronco when the aerial video revealed was actually that of the O.J. Simpson "low-speed" chase from two years ago. Piper himself, who recalled the incident on an episode of Pipers Pit the Podcast, made it clear. The two eventually returned to the arena, where Piper disrobed Goldust in the ring, effectively ending the confrontation. Piper left the company after Gorilla Monsoon took over the WWF by the evening. His last match at CNE "Experience" in Toronto was on September 6, 1996, where a video of him competing with other WWF wrestlers was posted.

Piper started competing in the fall of 1996 in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). In October, he made his surprise WCW debut as a fan favorite at the Halloween Havoc pay-per-view to mock the nWo chief and the World Heavyweight Champion Hollywood Hogan. Piper revealed that Eric Bischoff was a member of the nWo, which culminated in the nWo's assault on him on November 18 episode. Piper told Flair that he didn't need the Four Horsemen's assistance in beating Hogan, and that he'd do it on his own. Piper defeated Hogan in the company's non-title main event, earning him a championship shot against Hogan in SuperBrawl VII, where Piper was defeated. Nitro, Piper and his family banded together with Ric Flair and The Four Horsemen in their struggle with the nWo on March 10, 1997. Piper captained a team of Horsemen Chris Benoit, Steve McMichael, and Jeff Jart against the nWo and WCW's team of Lex Luger, Steiner Brothers, and The Giant, who were uncensored. His team lost the game. Nitro, Piper and Flair's Episode on March 31 made the decision to team up and fight side by side. Piper then turned against other members of the nWo. In a six-man tag team match at Slamboree, Piper, Flair, and Kevin Greene defeated nWo members Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Syxx. Piper and Flair had unsuccessfully challenged The Outsiders for the World Tag Team Championships the following month at The Great American Bash pay-per-view. On the episode of Nitro, Flair, and the Four Horsemen, Piper was assaulted by the Piper. Piper and Flair met at Bash at the Beach, which Piper won.

Piper took a break from television before returning to WCW on September 8th, where he was appointed the new on-air commissioner of WCW, which reduced his in-ring duties. He revived his rivalry with Hulk Hogan for a brief period of time by defeating him in a steel cage match at Halloween Havoc. Nitro, Piper, and Randy Savage sparred in a no contest on March 23, 1998. Piper defeated Hogan by disqualification on the 30th episode of Nitro on March 30. Piper and The Giant were teamed with the Giant in a loss to Hogan and Nash in a Baseball Bat on a Pole match at the 1998 Spring Stampede. Piper was the special guest referee in a match between Randy Savage and Bret Hart, which Hart lost, but Piper reaffirmed him and declared Savage as the champion by disqualification the following night. Hogan and Hart were defeated in a tag team match at The Great American Bash by submission. Piper defeated Savage by submission in the next match after the match, but Piper defeated Savage by submission. The Dallas Page of Nitro, Piper and Diamond defeated Sting and Lex Luger by disqualification on September 7 episode. In a WarGames match against Fall Brawl for a chance at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship the following month, Piper teamed with Diamond Dallas Page and The Warrior as Team WCW. Page dominated the match for his team. Piper confronted Bret Hart on a new episode of Nitro on September 14.

Piper defeated Bret Hart to win his third United States Heavyweight Championship on February 8, 1999; the first two reigns being in JCP. Piper retained the trophy for just two weeks after losing the match to Scott Hall of SuperBrawl IX. Piper disqualified Flair by disqualification at Slamboree, after Eric Bischoff's decision that Flair was disqualified for striking Piper with a foreign object. Piper's eight days ago on the May 17 episode of Nitro, Piper, called out Bischoff for what Bischoff did to him in 1996, before Bischoff apologized to him and WCW followers. Before Savage and Team Madness assaulted Piper and Bischoff, they were interrupted by Randy Savage and his Wife, before Kevin Nash saved him and Bischoff. After interference from Buff Bagwell, Flair defeated Piper by disqualifying for WCW. Piper knocked Bagwell out and joined Flair as Vice President, turning Piper heel for the first time in WCW, following Bagwell's disqualification. Piper played against Bagwell in a boxing match with Mills Lane as the special guest referee, but he lost. Piper returned to WCW as a face in late 1999, when he was then portrayed as the "Powers That Be" (an unseen power that was governing WCW). Piper was the special referee in the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match starring Goldberg and Hart at Starrcade. When Hart locked in the Sharpshooter on Goldberg, it was apparent that Goldberg had not submitted, Russo, Piper called for the beckoning when it was clear that Goldberg had not submitted. Piper and the Powers That Became a feud that came soon after. Piper's last appearance in WCW was in February 2000, when he was a surprise referee in the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match between Sid Vicious, Jeff Jarrett, and Scott Hall. Piper's deal was terminated in July 2000. WCW was terminated.

Piper served as the commissioner of the Xcitement Wrestling Federation before going to the WWE in 2003. (XWF) Piper's autobiography, In the Pit with Piper: Roddy Gets Rowdy, was published on November 5, 2002.

Piper returned to WWE on March 30, 2003, doing a surprise run in a surprise appearance during a Hulk Hogan-Vince McMahon match in Seattle, Washington, where he beat Hogan with a steel pipe to solidify his heel status; Hogan later won the match. Piper continued to work with Sean O'Haire at Backlash in April, Rikishi struck Piper with Piper's own coconut, but O'Haire beat Rikishi, who led to O'Haire's defeat of Rikishi.

In May, when Vince McMahon had been barred from television as Mr. America, Hogan returned under a mask as Mr. America" and continued his rivalry with Piper, O'Haire, and McMahon, who attempted to reveal Mr. America's true identity. Piper also pulled off the fake leg of one-legged wrestler Zach Gowen, who was playing a Hogan fan, during this storyline. Piper argued with Chris Jericho that if Piper's Pit was better than Jericho's talk show The Highlight Reel, Piper argue that it was better than Jericho's talk show The Highlight Reel. Piper lost to Mr. America later in the day.

Piper and O'Haire went on to challenge Tajiri and Eddie Guerrero for the WWE Tag Team Championship in June 2004, but WWE decided against Piper after a contentious interview with HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel in which Piper addressed the darker side of the wrestling industry in June. "Piper said he used drugs for many years while serving as a professional wrestler" and that he does not like the person he becomes when he actively performs as a professional wrestler," and he dismissed Piper due to "inability to find an understanding on a contract and failure to help Piper avoid engaging in any self-destructive conduct." Piper said that HBO took portions of his interviews out of context to make wrestling seem bad on his 2006 DVD.

On December 4, 2002, Piper debuted with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) at an NWA-TNA pay-per-view and launched a feud with Vince Russo, notably cutting a promo where he blamed Russo for Owen Hart's death. Piper hosted video-tape messages from September to December 2003, as well as on the October 8, 2004, episode of Impact! Piper crashed the Impact Zone and announced his interview segment In the Pit with Piper. Jimmy Snuka, who refused to comply with Piper's request of striking Piper with a coconut, hosted In the Pit with Piper in November 2004 at Victory Road. Piper hosted another In The Pit with Piper and interviewed Hector Garza, but was interrupted by Scott Hall and Kevin Nash on the December 24 episode of Impact. Piper's Pitch received a superkick from Shawn Michaels, the host of Piper's Pit on July 11, 2005. Piper and Cowboy Bob Orton and Randy Orton feuded with him in October and November 2005 after they assaulted him during a session of Piper's Pit with Mick Foley. Although Piper defeated both Ortons in a handicap match and demanded Bob submit in a six-man tag match, the feud came to an end with Randy intervening in a singles match between Piper and Bob, disqualifying Bob but defeating Piper.

Piper later appeared on Raw at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 16, 2009. Piper challenged Vince McMahon to a street fight later in the evening, but Randy Orton came out to fight in McMahon's place. Kofi Kingston came out to prevent Randy's assault on Piper.

On March 27, 2010, Wendi Richter was inducted into the 2010 WWE Hall of Fame. In a match that featured Christian and Ted DiBiase, he appeared on Raw the next night as one of the Legend Lumberjacks.
