Maria-Cecilia Simone Kelly (born May 7, 1997), also known as Rico Nasty, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer.

Kelly, who came from Maryland, was exposed to rap music at a young age.

In 2016, Kelly released two mixtapes: The Rico Life and Sugar Trap.

Both tapes attracted burgeoning media and general interest. Kelly signed to Atlantic Records in June 2018 after releasing her sixth mixtape, Nasty.

Early life

Maria-Cecilia Simone Kelly was born as the only child of a Puerto Rican mother and African-American father who was also a rapper who introduced her to rap music as a youth. She was born in Prince George's County, Maryland, New York, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. When she was 11, her mother moved to Palmer Park, Maryland, where she was attending a Baltimore boarding school for the sixth grade. At 14 she was banned from smoking marijuana at 14 and moved to Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Prince George's County, where her musical career began. Her father was sent to prison and her parents were divorced the following year.

Personal life

Rico Nasty gave birth to Cameron during her son's senior year of high school at age 18. Malik Foxx, her boss, began purchasing production equipment as she began to gain esteem for her music. Foxx is Cameron's "only father figure" according to Rico Nasty of The Fader.

Career

Rico began rapping in high school and introduced Summer's Eve (2014), her first mixtape, when she was in tenth grade at Charles Herbert Flowers High School. Since graduating from high school, she began focusing on her music career, releasing two mixtapes in 2016: The Rico Story and Sugar Trap. Rico Nasty's 2016 single "iCarly," which has received over 500 thousand views on YouTube within months, gained her some traction. She also released the single "Hey Arnold," which was later remixed with Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty. The pair will appear on The Fate of the Furious: The Album soundtrack later this year.

Tales of Tacobella, Rico Nasty's fourth mixtape, debuted in May 2017, which is her first commercially available release as of September 2020. The mixtape was described as "otherworldly and synth-heavy" by Kyann-Sian Williams of NME, who noted that Rico's singing skills were enhanced by the mixtape. Rico released her single "Poppin" in June 2017, which quickly attracted over five million views on YouTube. The single was also on HBO's Insecure television series Insecure. Sugar Trap 2 in Rico was released in October 2017 and featured rapper Famous Dex. Rolling Stone's reviewer named the mixtape as one of the Best Rap Albums of 2017. In late 2017, Rico began a Sugar Trap Tour.

The singles "Smack A Bitch," "Poppin," and "Key Lime OG" rose to fame in early 2018, with each of them reaching and surpassing 10 million YouTube views in that year. Since being used in various memes, the former two songs also gained a following on YouTube. "Smack A Bitch" was also ranked at No. 1 in the United States. 2 on The Fader's list of "The 100 Greatest Songs of 2018" has two of the best songs of 2018. Rico Nasty's heightened fame attracted the attention of Atlantic Records, where she signed and released her sixth mixtape and major-label debut, Nasty, in June 2018. The mixtape was generally well-reced, and it appeared on critics' lists of publications such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Noise, Fact, and Spin, among other things. The mixtape's songs, "Bitch I'm Nasty," "Countin' Up," and "Rage," were also included on lists of the best songs of 2018 by Paper, Highsnobiety, and Pitchfork respectively. Rico Nasty Tour, a brand new name for herself in late July, began in late July, supporting the mixtape, appearing in twenty-seven venues around North America over six weeks and concluding the tour in early September.

In December 2019, Rico Nasty un-album singles and related music videos for "Guap (LaLaLa)" and "Roof" in January 2019. "Sandy," "Party Goin Dumb," "Hit That," and "What Does" were among the non-album singles released in early 2019, she followed them up with several more non-album singles such as "Sandy," "Big Dick Energy," "Hit That," and "Wanna Do." During the Free Spirit World Tour's first night, Rico Nasty and producer Kenny Beats supported Khalid. Rico Nasty was the front page of The Fader's Summer 2018 issue, and the publication Countin' Up was the subject of a documentary released by the magazine titled Counting' Up.

Anger Management, a surprise album released in April 2019, Rico and producer Kenny Beats. The mixtape received critical acclaim and appeared on several websites including Complex, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Noisey, Billboard, NME, and Crack, among others. Both commercially and critically, Anger Management is arguably Rico Nasty's most popular launch to date. Rico Nasty appeared at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the first time in her career in April 2019. Rico began her "Live in Europe" tour in late May and ended in mid-July, in order to maintain the record. Rico Nasty was a member of the XXL Freshman Class of 2019. She appeared at New York Fashion Week in September 2019 and then announced the single "Fashion Week" later that week. In October 2019, Rico Nasty appeared as a headlining act at Rolling Loud in New York.

Rico Nasty's original song "My Little Alien" is included on the soundtrack to the 2020 film Scoob. In May 2020, the Optimist will be in charge of determining the date. The Recording Industry Association of America of America awarded Gold for selling over 500,000 units in the United States in June 2020. Rico Nasty's single "Dirty" was also released in June 2020 as part of the original soundtrack for HBO's Insecure television series Insecure. Rico Nasty appeared alongside Colombian-American singer Kali Uchis on the song "Aqu" Yo Mando," which was the lead single from Uchis' second studio album Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) on August 7, 2020.

Rico Nasty released the single "iPhone" as the lead single of her debut studio album, Nightmare Vacation, on August 13, 2020. On the same day, she revealed that she would be collaborating with makeup brand Il Makiage on a new makeup line. Rico Nasty appeared on the front page of British music magazine NME in September 2020. On September 17, Rico Nasty's second single from Nightmare Vacation was "Own It." In October 2020, she became an ambassador for Rihanna's lingerie brand Savage X Fenty, as well as a cameo appearance in the Savage X Fenty Exhibition Vol. 2. A few days later, Rico Nasty launched a social media campaign with children's TV mascot Hip Hop Harry and Atlantic Records to convince the general population to vote in the 2020 presidential election in the United States. Don Toliver and Gucci Mane performed "Don't Like Me" as the third single off of Nightmare Vacation.

Rico Nasty announced the album's fourth single and album cover on the same day. In November 2020, she also unveiled a video trailer for the album. Rico Nasty revealed the tracklist on December 1, the first day before the album was officially released on December 4. The debut of Nightmare Vacation coincided with the debut of its fifth album, "STFU." Rico Nasty debuted "OHFR" on television in January 2021, making her television debut in January 2021. Jimmy Fallon is the star of The Tonight Show.

Rico Nasty, the opening act for Playboi Carti's King Vamp Tour in late 2021, was in late 2021. Rico Nasty was booed or had items thrown at her while on tour, and she was on tour in several cities.
