Richard Gilliland (born January 23, 1950) is an American television and movie actor.
Life and career
Gilliland was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He attended high school in Overland Park, Kansas (Shawne Mission South), graduating in 1968. He appeared in plays and musicals.
In 1987, he married actress Jean Smart. They met while designing a set of Designing Women (he played J. D. Shackelford, Annie Potts' boyfriend, Mary Jo Shively). Connor Douglas (born 1989) and Forrest (adopted from China in May 2009) are their two sons.
Gilliland appeared on television for the first time in the 1970s. The Waltons, Thirtysomething, Party of Five, Little Women, and a recurring role on Designing Women were among his notable appearances (where he met Smart, who appeared as Charlene in the film).
