Reginald Eurias Cathey (August 18, 1958 – February 9, 2018) was an American actor.

Dr. Norman Wilson, the game show announcer in Square One Television, was best known for his role as Norman Wilson in The Wire, Martin Querns in Oz.

Franklin Storm in the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four and Freddy Hayes in House of Cards, with the latter winning three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, including a win in 2015.

Early life

Cathey was born in Huntsville, Alabama, on August 18, 1958, to Red Cathey, an Army colonel who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as his wife, who was a DOD worker and an educator. Donza was his sister. He spent his youth on a West German farm before returning to Alabama at the age of 14. After attending a United Service Organization exhibition in West Germany, he began to love theater at the age of 9. Cathey graduated from J.O. Johnson High School, where he appeared in plays such as To Kill a Mockingbird. He then studied drama at the University of Michigan and the Yale School of Drama.

Career

One of Cathey's first appearances was on the children's television show Square One TV. This was followed by guest appearances in such films as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Homicide: Life on the Street. He appeared in The Mask as Freeze in 1994, as the main antagonist's companion and bodyguard who is inadvertently killed by the title character. He appeared as the coroner in 1995's Se7en. He appeared in the cult comedy film Pootie Tang, and he appeared on HBO's The Wire as Norman Wilson during the fourth and fifth seasons. Scalio worked with writer David Simon on Emmy Award-winning miniseries The Corner; Cathey played a drug addict named Scalio. As unit manager Martin Querns, he appeared on HBO prison drama Oz. He appeared in the film Tank Girl as Deetee. Aftermath: Population Zero, a National Geographic Channel special that imagines what Earth would look like if humanity no longer exists, he narrated it. In the film American Psycho, he played homeless man Al, who was shot by Patrick Bateman. Wonders of Weather, a TV show, was narrated by him. In the episode "Hay Day," he appeared on Between the Lions, playing King Ray.

Cathey appeared in The People Speak, a documentary feature film based on historian Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, in 2009.

In a dramatic performance of Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding at Wyndham's Theatre, London, Cathey appeared in "Red" Redding in Fall 2009. He has appeared on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as an undercover police officer charged with animal smuggling (episode: "Wildlife") and later as a high-priced defense attorney to a hooker ("Rhodium Nights"). In the episode "Anti-Thesis" as a college professor accused of murder, he appeared on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. On the FX series Lights Out, Barry K. Word appeared as a boxing promoter.

Freddy Hayes, the maker of Freddy's BBQ in Netflix's original series House of Cards, as well as Grimm's Grimm, appeared in Baron Samedi's recurring role. His portrayal of Hayes in the second, third, and fourth seasons of House of Cards received three Emmy nominations as well as one for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Cathey had aspired to be in the Irish soap opera Fair City.

Dr. Franklin Storm, the father of The Invisible Woman and The Human Torch, co-starred in Josh Trank's Fantastic Four (2015). In the Cinemax film Outcast, he appeared in Rome, WV, as the county sheriff. In the Netflix series Marvel's Luke Cage, one of Cathey's last television roles was portraying James Lucas.
