Joseph McGann (born 24 July 1958) is an English actor.

Charlie Burrows, the "housekeeper" in the television comedy series The Upper Hand (1990–96), as well as in Night and Day. He is also a television reporter on the BBC's South Today programme, covering local events in the south of England.

Life and career

McGann was born in Kensington, Liverpool, to a metallurgist father named Joe as well as a teacher named Clare.

His three younger brothers, Paul, Mark, and Stephen, are also actors. Clare, his older sister, has also named Clare after their mother. He appeared in Tom, Dick and Harry, a performance by Ray and Michael Cooney at the Duke of York's Theatre in 1995, with Stephen and Mark. All four brothers appeared in the BBC drama The Hanging Gale the year before.

In 1989, he portrayed Lord Glozelle in the BBC version of Prince Caspian. He debuted in Charlie Burrows' long-running ITV sitcom The Upper Hand the following year, alongside Diana Weston and Honor Blackman. He appeared in All Creatures Great and Small, as well as Dangerfield (TV series).

In 1992, he appeared in "Masklin" in Truckers' TV adaptation, the first of Terry Pratchett's three books in The Nome Trilogy. In the 2003 stage musical version (by Jason Carr and Gary Yershon) of the book The Water Babies, he appeared as Grimes at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

He appeared in BBC Three's Nativity on Sunday, as one of the three Magi; a live interpretation of Jesus' birth set in modern-day Liverpool. "Lady Madonna" was his main solo song, singing to the newly-born Jesus who is lying in a shopping trolley in a pub garage.

McGann appeared on Fiddler on the Roof in 2008, but he missed the show two months before the tour ended due to an arm injury sustained on stage. He appeared on BBC's Celebrity MasterChef alongside Linda Barker and Ninia Benjamin in 2009 and then dropped out in the semi-finals. Richard appeared in "Lost Monsters" by Laurence Wilson at Liverpool's Everyman Theatre in May-June 2009. As of 2011, he and regular host Michelle McManus can appear on STV's daily newspaper show The Hour.

In a UK touring version of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, he appeared as Ray Say in 2012. However, he dropped out midway through the tour, leaving understudy Phil Andrews to take over the remainder of the tour. He appeared in Elf: The Musical in October 2015, playing Walter Hobbs at the Dominion Theatre.

McGann had joined the cast of Hollyoaks as Edward Hutchinson, the father of established character Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard). McGann had filmed his final scenes on the soap in December 2020, which aired later this month.
