Phil Jones Career

Club career

Jones joined the Blackburn Rovers youth team in 2002. He then joined the senior squad for the 2009–10 Premier League season, completing a two-year professional contract. After starting the League Cup match against Nottingham Forest on September 22, 2009, which Blackburn won 12-0, he made his first-team debut for Blackburn. In February 2010, then signed a new five-year deal with a £16 million release clause. Jones made his first Premier League appearance for Blackburn against Chelsea on March 21st, just a month after turning 18. He was largely praised for his dedication and steadfast center-back, as Rovers held the champions to a 1–1 draw at Ewood Park, making several critical blocks and interceptions. He made nine league appearances and three in cup appearances during the 2009–10 season.

Jones appeared in the first match of the season against Everton and then continued to play the majority of the team's games in the first half of the season, although in a new defensive midfield role. In a match against West Ham United in December, a torn knee cartilage injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season. However, he recovered from injury against Blackpool at Ewood Park on March 19, 2011 as a second-half replacement for Brett Emerton in a 2–2 draw. Jones played the full 90 minutes in a 0–0 draw on April 2nd, the first time in four months against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Despite his injury, he appeared in 26 league games and two cup matches for Blackburn this season.

Manchester United were reportedly keen on signing Jones at the end of the 2010-11 season. When Blackburn held United to a 1–1 draw on the day United clinched the 2010–11 championship, Alex Ferguson was clearly impressed with Jones' dedication and leadership skills at center-back. United announced on June 13, 2011 that they had reached an agreement to sign Jones for a five-year contract with an undisclosed transfer fee estimated to be at least £16.5 million; the contract would be finalized upon his return from international service. In United's 3–1 win over Chicago Fire, he made his debut for the club on the 2011 pre-season tour to the United States.

Jones made his competitive debut for Manchester United as a second-half replacement, replacing Rio Ferdinand in the 2011 FA Community Shield against rivals Manchester City. United were 2–0 down but 3–2. Jones made his league debut a week later, as a substitute replacing Ferdinand as United beat West Bromwich Albion 2–1. In a 3–0 win over Old Trafford on August 22, he made his full Premier League debut against Tottenham Hostpur, where he played the entire match alongside Jonny Evans. Jones was thumping Bolton Wanderers 5–0 at the Reebok Stadium on September 10, 2011. He started the whole match right-back and scored Rooney's first goal after a quick throw in and pin point cross for Rooney to tap home. Jones took a mazy dribble going past several Bolton defenders before his shot was blocked by the goalkeeper but not by Rooney. Jones arrived in Liverpool for the away game as a box-to-box midfielder, which was different from his usual center-back and full-back roles.

Jones scored his first senior goal against Aston Villa on December 3, 2011. He arrived in the box from central midfield to face a cross from Nani with a controlled side foot volley to score the match's only goal. Jones scored a consolation goal against Basel in a 2–1 Champions League loss that resulted in United's expulsion from the tournament, resulting in the team's forfeiture of the tournament, and the team's suspension was postponed due to Federico Macheda's shot coming back off the bar. Jones sustained a facial injury in a home match against Fulham on December 21, 2011, but the X-ray showed no serious injury and Jones returned to action against Blackburn on December 31.

Jones made his first appearance in a home match against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on November 20th, after suffering a back injury and undergoing knee surgery that kept him out for the 2012–13 season. He made his first Premier League appearance in November 28, 2012, when Anderson was brought to a 1–0 victory at home to West Ham United in the 84th minute. In a 4–0 win over Norwich City in the League Cup on October 29, he scored his first goal of the 2013-14 season. In a 1–0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the final group-stage match of the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United defeated them on December 10th, scoring his first goal of the season.

Jones signed a new four-year deal with Manchester United on July 1, 2015. He renewed his deal until 2023 on February 8, 2019. Jones was assisting Anthony Martial in a 3-2 victory over Fulham on Sunday, his first goal appearance since 2014.

He scored in a 6–0 FA Cup win over Tranmere Rovers on January 26, 2020; it was his first goal for United since March 2014. He was then missing 20 months, returned to fitness, and played with the reserves in September 2021. Jones opened up about his injuries in September 2021, saying, "I think as a man, as a human being, that's the lowest I probably ever felt in my life."

Jones returned to first team action in a 1–0 home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 3, 2022, his first appearance in nearly two years, after an injury.

International career

Jones made his England under-19 team debut in a 3–1 victory over Turkey on November 17, 2009. He appeared in the under-19s three times.

Jones was called up to the England under-21 squad on August 4, 2010. Jones earned his first under-21 cap against Uzbekistan on August ten years ago. In the 46th minute, he was released and was replaced by Liverpool's Martin Kelly. He was chosen for the 2011 European Under-21 Championship in Denmark and was made captain by Stuart Pearce for the final group stage match against the Czech Republic.

Fabio Capello was called up to England's senior team for the friendly against the Netherlands on August 5, 2011, but he did not participate because the match was postponed four days later by the Football Association after riots in London. Jones made his England senior debut against Montenegro in UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying, which was 2–2 draw on October 7, 2011. Capello said Jones was "born with talent" and praised his appearance after the match.

Capello's replacement Roy Hodgson had Jones named him in England's UEFA Euro 2012 squad. However, he did not appear at the tournament, but not for the first time.

Jones was selected in England's 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on May 12, 2014. Hodgson took uncapped defender John Stones as a standby for Jones due to a shoulder injury, but he returned before the 2nd of June. Jones was expected to play in England's final group match as a starter, assisting the team in a 0–0 draw with Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte, despite England's expulsion.

He was selected in the 2018 FIFA World Cup's 23-man England national team squad. He appeared in two games, both against Belgium (in the group stage and third place play-off), but both ended in defeat.

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 21, 2024
After he handed over a transfer request, Wayne Rooney has revealed that his friendship with former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was "never the same." After receiving promises about their ability to recruit the best players in the country, the former England striker demanded to leave the Red Devils in October 2010 as he expressed worry about the club's direction. He made a U-turn on his decision and will continue at Old Trafford until the end of the 2016-17 season.

Residents of Cornwall's 'greatest' towns are delighted to receive the title in the hopes of removing second home owners from the market (but Croydon and Peterborough are still depressing)

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 16, 2024
High crime rate, human waste on the streets, and rude Gen-Zers are among the reasons attributed to the missing tag in some of Britain's most depressing towns. The 'gorgeous' seaside town Falmouth, Cornwall, was surprisingly ranked on the top 20 lists of the worst places to live on a bleakest list. According to the team at iLiveHere, it was promoted to the top spot due to the strength of social media and word of mouth. Peterborough, a Cambridgeshire boy, was promoted to second place on the list, which also included Alloa, Crawley, West Sussex, and Croydon, south London. MailOnline spoke to people in Falmouth, Peterborough, and Croydon to ask their opinion and find out whether their towns deserved to be polled so much in the annual survey.

As he takes a few days off to'chill out, Luke Littler says he'll remain 'level headed' and'keep myself to myself'

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 4, 2024
As he begins a few days off after becoming the youngest ever finalist at the World Darts Championship, Luke Littler has maintained that he will remain 'level headed' and "keep myself to myself." After losing 7-4 to Luke Humphries in last night's final at Alexandra Palace, the 16-year-old, who stunned the world with his spectacular run in the tournament, fell just short of establishing darts history.
