Mohamed Salah Career

Club career

Salah began playing for local youth teams. Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and Francesco Totti are among his childhood heroes. He joined Al Mokawloon's youth team in 2006 after being spotted by a scout who had intended to watch another child play but was interrupted by Salah. Salah often had to cancel classes to travel for the 3 hours to preparation. Salah was 15 years old when he was first noticed by first team manager Mohamed Radwan, who immediately transferred him to the senior squad. Salah was obliged to have a special diet and training regimen due to his muscles not being fully developed due to his youthful age. In a 1-1 away draw against El Mansoura on May 3, 2010, he made his senior team debut in the Egyptian Premier League as a replacement. Salah continued to earn minutes on the field throughout the 2010–11 season, eventually becoming a regular in the team. Salah was struggling to score despite being given regular game time. During matches, he would often be in tears, and Radwan says it only motivated him to become better. In a 1–1 away draw against Al Ahly on December 25, 2010, he scored his first goal for them. He remained a regular for Al Mokawloon, appearing in every game of the 2011-12 season. Following the 2012 Port Said Stadium riot, the Egyptian Premier League was suspended, and the Egyptian Football Association announced on Monday that the Egyptian Premier League would suspend the remainder of the season.

Basel, a Swiss Super League club, had been watching Salah for some time, so the club organised a friendly match with the Egypt U-23 team following their Egyptian Premier League suspension. Salah scored twice during the match at the Stadion Rankhof in Basel on March 16th, and despite only playing the second half, the Egyptians won by 4–3 victories. Salah was then invited by Basel to remain in the city for a week of training. Salah had signed for Basel on a four-year deal that began on April 10, 2012, according to the newspaper. He initially found it difficult to settle after arriving in a foreign language and being signed as a substitute for fan-favourite Shaqiri (whom he would later play with at Liverpool). Salah lost 4–2 on his unofficial debut against Steaua București on June 23, 2012 in a friendly match. On August 8, he made his Basel debut in a UEFA Champions League preliminary stage match against the Norwegian club Molde, as a replacement in the 74th minute. On August 12, he made his league debut against Thun and was playing the full match.

In the 2–0 home win over Lausanne, he scored his first league goal a week later, his second goal. Salah scored his first Europa League goal in the quarter-finals on April 11, 2013 when Basel advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4–1 on penalties after a 4–4 aggregate draw. Salah scored against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the semi-final on May 2nd, but the team was defeated 5–2 on aggregate. Despite being frustrated in Europe late, Basel won the Swiss Super League 2012–13 Championship championship and finished runners-up in the Swiss Cup.

Salah was a member of the Basel team that defeated the 2013 Uhrencup ahead of the 2013–14 Swiss Super League season. Salah scored against Aarau on July 13 in his first league appearance of the season. In the third qualifying round of Champions League, he scored his first Champions League goal against Maccabi Tel Aviv a month later. Salah was the subject of major controversy after the game, after he seemed to deliberately avoid shaking hands with the Israeli team's players in both the home and away legs.

In the play-off round, he scored twice against the Bulgarian league champions PFC Ludogorets Razgrad on August 21, 2013. Salah won by an equalizer against Chelsea on September 18, 2013 in a 2–1 away victory during the group stage. Salah scored the winning goal during Basel's second match at the St. Jakob-Park on November 26th. However, he was unable to prevent Basel from being eliminated in the group stage.

Salah continued to perform on the domestic stage. He scored 4 goals in 18 games, including a double against Young Boys, the league's top league team, for the fifth time in a row.

Chelsea announced on January 23 that a deal had been reached with Basel to attract Salah for a fee that was expected to be in the region of £11 million. The transfer was completed three days later, making him the first Egyptian to sign for the London-based club. Liverpool had been keen to sign the Basel striker and had made an offer of £11 million but the Blues denied him.

Salah made his Premier League debut on February 8th as a replacement in Chelsea's 3–0 victory over Newcastle United. Salah scored his first goal for Chelsea against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the London Derby on March 22, ending as a substitute for Oscar in a match that ended in a 6–0 victory for the Blues. Salah opened the scoring and later scored a penalty and helped with Chelsea's 3–0 victory over Stoke City on April 5th.

Salah's future with Chelsea looked to be in jeopardy ahead of the 2014–15 season, following rumors that he might be compelled to return to Egypt to carry out military service after his enrollment for an education scheme was withdrawn by the Egyptian Minister of Higher Education. After a meeting with then Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, the Minister of Higher Education, and Egyptian national manager Shawky Gharieb, he was spared from military service. Salah's squad numbers increased from 15 to 17 for the start of the season, with his new number having been moved to number 10.

Salah was seldom used during the season, with only three Premier League, two UEFA Champions League, and three cup appearances, failing to score in any of them. Carlos Mourinho, a manager who suffered in a 2–1 victory at Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round of the League Cup, chastised him and fellow winger André Schürrle. Mourinho said that despite Salah's appearances in three leagues before his loan transfer to Fiorentina, he would receive a replica winner's trophy from the club for his services this season.

Chelsea announced on the transfer deadline on February 2nd, that Salah will join Fiorentina as part of a transfer contract that saw Juan Cuadrado move in the opposite direction. In a 3–2 victory over Atalanta at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, six days after signing, he made his Fiorentina debut in the 65th minute as a back-up for Joaqun. Salah wore the number 74 shirt in honor of the victims of the Port Said Stadium riot.

Salah scored his first goal for the club in the 30th minute against Sassuolo on February 14th. He then scored an assist to Khouma Babacar just two minutes after scoring; Fiorentina defeated Fiorentina 3-1. Salah scored his first European goal for Fiorentina as his team advanced to the Europa League's round of 16, beating Tottenham 3–1 on aggregate. Salah scored the winning goal against Inter Milan on March 1st in Serie A, his third goal in Serie A. Salah won by 2–1 over Juventus in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, four days after that. Fiorentina offered the possibility to make the loan move permanent at the end of the season, but Salah refused to move. Salah refused to return to Fiorentina and instead joined Roma, another Serie A club. Fiorentina lodged a complaint to FIFA on September 11th, alleging that Chelsea broke the pact when they allowed Salah to join Roma on loan. Salah and Chelsea were not guilty of any wrongdoing by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Salah joined Roma on a season-long loan for €5 million, with the option to make the loan permanent for a reported €15 million. He wore the number 11 shirt. He made his debut on August 22nd at Hellas Verona with a 1–1 draw. Salah's first goal of the season came against Sassuolo on September 20th to help Roma salvage a point after the game ended in a 2–2 draw. He continued to score in his two matches, a 2–1 loss to Sampdoria and a 5–1 victory over Carpi. Salah returned to Stadio Artemio Franchi on October 25th, scoring the opener against his old club Fiorentina to help Roma win for the fourth straight league victory. Salah was dismissed after picking up his second yellow in the final minutes of the game, just seconds after picking up his first yellow. He scored the first goal of a 3–2 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen on November 4th.

Roma won 4–1 and leapt into the top three after he faced his old team Fiorentina once more on March 4th and scored another double. Salah will be able to score another three goals this season, as the former and Bologna played together on the final day. Salah scored 15 goals in 42 games in the 2015–16 season as Roma finished third in Serie A and qualified for the Champions League in third place. Salah received the club's 2015-16 Player of the Season award in June.

Salah's contract on a permanent basis for €15 million was confirmed on August 3, 2016. In a 4–0 victory over Udinese in the season's first game, he scored his first goal of the season. Salah beat Bologna 3–0 on November 6, his first club hat-trick of his career, with a hat-trick on October 6th. However, he was out for the first half of December due to a ruptured ankle ligament. In a 1–0 loss to championship rivals Juventus on December 17, he returned as a halftime substitute. Salah won by a narrow margin after a two-month absence, breaking his drought on 19 February and scoring against Torino in a 4–1 victory. He scored Roma's first goal in a 3-2 loss to Lyon in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League's first leg on March 9th. Despite winning by 2–1 in the second leg, the pair were unable to turn the tide around and were dismantled 5–4 and aggregate. Salah was inducted by captain Francesco Totti, who was playing his last game with the team on May 28 in a 3–2 victory over Genoa on May 28th in the club's last game of the season. Roma finished second in second, just four points behind champions Juventus. Salah scored 19 goals in all competitions.

Salah agreed to a transfer to Liverpool on June 22, 2017. He decided on a long-term deal with the Reds, which may rise to £43 million. Andy Carroll's fee was a club record, eclipsing the £35 million spent on him in 2011. He was given the number 11 shirt he had worn before Roberto Firmino but was then upgraded to number 9. He joined the club in July at the start of the summer transfer window, becoming Liverpool's first Egyptian player. On his Premier League debut against Watford in a 3–3 draw on August 12, he scored in a 3–3 draw. Salah scored his second goal for Liverpool in a 2017-18 UEFA Champions League play-off round 4–2 victory (6–3 agg) over Hoffenheim, his first goal at Anfield on August 24. Salah scored and assisted with a goal in a 4–0 victory over Arsenal three days later. Salah has been named Player of the Month by Liverpool fans for his August appearances. Salah scored twice in a 7-0 Champions League victory over Maribor on October 17th, assisting Liverpool in their joint-largest away win in the competition and the first away win for an English club.

Salah scored the opener and refused to celebrate in a 1–1 home draw with his former Chelsea out of respect for the club and the victims of the North Sinai Mosque massacre two days earlier. Salah continued to score twice as a replacement against Stoke City on November 29 in a 3–0 victory, taking them to the top of the Premier League's goalscoring charts. Salah gained 4–0 over AFC Bournemouth in the first game in Premier League history, allowing the club to win four consecutive away league matches by a margin of at least three goals. On his 26th appearance in 19 appearances in 1895, he became Liverpool's joint-second fastest player to reach 20 goals on his 26th appearance, behind George Allan who reached the record in 19 appearances in 1895.

Salah defeated Watford 5–0, his first hat-trick for Liverpool, on 17 March 17, 2018. In this match, he set a record of scoring 36 times in his debut season with Liverpool and became Europe's top five leagues' best goalscorer, beating Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Tottenham striker Harry Kane. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said, "we are witnessing the start of greatness" after Salah's record-breaking goal exploits.

He scored in both Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester City in early April 2018 to help his team advance. Salah was named in the PFA Player of the Year award on April 22, 2018, having earlier been voted in the PFA Team of the Year for the Premier League. In a 5–2 Champions League semi-final first leg victory over Roma, he scored a brace. He became both Africa's first and first Liverpool player to score ten goals in a single campaign in the tournament. His double helped him to 43 goals for the season across all sports, beating Roger Hunt's record of 42 and making him Liverpool's second-highest goalscorer in a single season, behind Ian Rush. He had previously broken the club's record for the Premier League era, defeating Robbie Fowler's total of 36 goals set in 1995-96 and Fernando Torres' record of 33 for the most goals by a Liverpool player in a debut season. Salah played in the second leg as Liverpool defeated Roma 7–6 on aggregate to qualify for the first time in 111 years after his two goals and assists in the first leg against Roma. He'll then become the Premier League's all-time goalcorer for a 38-game season, scoring his 32nd league goal against Brighton & Hove Albion in a 4–0 victory en route to being named the Premier League Golden Boot.

Salah sustained his left shoulder injury in the 30th minute during a Madrid defender Sergio Ramos' challenge in the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid. He left the field in tears after returning to the ground again; the match resulted in a 3–1 loss. The Egyptian FA said that this will have no impact on his participation in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and that Salah will also be named in the team's final squad on June 4th. Ramos sent him a letter the day before the game and wished him well.

Salah signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool on July 2nd. Jürgen Klopp, the manager, said the announcement was a mark of intention in terms of Liverpool's football position, with Salah committing himself further to the club. Salah scored Liverpool's first goal of the season on August 12th in a 4–0 victory over West Ham United. Salah played a key role in both of Liverpool's goals on August 20th, winning a penalty for the first and providing an assist for Sadio Mané for the second. Salah scored the only goal in Liverpool's 1–0 victory over Brighton five days later.

Salah was selected on the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Men's Player of the Year in August, placing third in third place, and was also on the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Forward of the Season in second place. He was named on the three-man shortlist for the Best FIFA Men's Player on September 3rd, finishing third. Salah was given the 2018 FIFA Puskás Award for goal of the year, despite widespread protests against the decision. Salah scored twice against Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League group stage on October 24th, scoring his second goal for the club and his 50th for the club. He is the fastest player in Liverpool history to reach the half century with 50 goals in 65 games.

Salah won by 4–0 away over Bournemouth on December 8th, advancing Liverpool to the top of the league table. He scored the winning goal in a 1–0 victory over Napoli in their last Champions League group competition, with the goal qualifying Liverpool to the round of sixteen. In a 4–3 victory over Crystal Palace on January 19, he scored his 50th Premier League goal with a brace, bringing the total number to 72 appearances to 72. He became the joint-fourth fastest player to reach the record alongside Fernando Torres, but behind only Andy Cole, Alan Shearer, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, he was the joint fourth fastest player to reach the milestone.

West Ham announced in February 2019 that they were looking at a video that allegedly showed fans racially insulting Salah, which included being Muslim. As a result of the probe, the fan was barred for three years. In a 3–1 victory over Southampton on 5 April, he scored his 50th Premier League goal, beating Torres, who then surpassed him as the club's fastest player to reach the milestone for the club in his 69th appearance. He also made history by becoming the third fastest player to reach the Premier League in the Premier League era, behind Shearer for Blackburn Rovers in 66 appearances, and Manchester United's Van Nistelrooy in 68 appearances. In a 2–0 win over Chelsea that earned them a club-record-equaling 26th victory in the Premier League this season, he scored his second goal, a strong kick from 25 yards out, which lifted the club's second-highest win in the top flight since the record of 30 years was set in 1979. He made his 100th appearance for Liverpool on April 26th and equalled Roger Hunt and Sam Raybould for the player with the most goals in his first century of appearances for the club, scoring twice in a 5–0 victory over Huddersfield Town to bring his total number to 69. He scored Liverpool's first goal in a 2–0 victory over Tottenham in the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final from a penalty on June 1st. Salah's goal, which he scored in the first two minutes of the game, was the second fastest goal ever scored in a Champions League final, but it was slower than Paolo Maldini's attempt against Liverpool in the 2005 final. Salah was nominated by a worldwide players' union, FIFPro, and FIFA as one of the top 55 players in September 2019.

Salah scored Liverpool's second goal in a 4–1 victory over Norwich City in the 2019-20 Premier League's first game of the season. Salah scored his fifth and ultimately decisive penalty in a 5–4 victory over Chelsea on August 14th, after the game had ended 2–2 after extra-time. Salah finished fifth in the voting polls for the 2019 Ballon d'Or in December and made his 100th Premier League appearance this month, marking the occasion with a goal and assist in Liverpool's 3–0 victory over Bournemouth. Liverpool secured the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup for the second month, with Salah receiving the Golden Ball award for Player of the Tournament.

Salah scored Liverpool's opening goal in a 2–0 victory at West Ham on January 29, the first time the club's 127-year history that the club had won the Premier League in a season has. Liverpool beat Bournemouth 2–1 on March 7th, giving the English top-flight record of 22 consecutive home victories for the first time. It was also his 70th Premier League appearance in 100 appearances for Liverpool, meaning he had scored seven more goals in the club's first 100 league games (63 goals by Fernando Torres). Salah defeated Leeds United 4–3 on September 12, 2020, with two goals scoring in the first league game of the season. Hence, he became the first Liverpool player to score in four consecutive league openers from 2017–18 to 2020–21, and the second man in Premier League history, after Teddy Sheringham from 1992–93 to 1995–96. He was also the first player to score a hat-trick for Liverpool in the first league match since John Aldridge's 1988–89 season against Charlton Athletic.

In a 2–2 away draw against Everton on October 17, he scored his 100th goal for Liverpool in all competitions. Salah's 100th goal in his 159th game in 2009, and the third fastest in Liverpool's history, after Roger Hunt (100 goals in 144 games) and Jack Parkinson (153 games). Salah is the fastest player to score 100 goals for Liverpool in England's top flight, considering that both Hunt and Parkinson scored some of Liverpool's goals in the Football League Second Division.

Salah scored two goals against West Ham on January 31, 2021, making him the fifth Liverpool player to score more than 20 goals in four consecutive seasons, and the first since Ian Rush, who played from 1981-80 to 1986–87. In addition, his goal in the 68th minute that game was later voted Premier League Goal of the Month. He scored in a 1–1 draw with Newcastle United on April 24th, becoming the first Liverpool player to score 20 goals in three separate Premier League campaigns. He scored a goal in a 4–2 away victory over Manchester United on May 13, his team's first away win at Old Trafford since March 2014. In addition,, he was the only one to score at Old Trafford for two separate games in a season, scoring twice in a 3–2 loss in the FA Cup since Harry Chambers in the 1920–21 season.

Salah opened the 2021-22 season with a goal and two assists in a 3–0 victory at Norwich. Salah was the first player to score in the first game of five consecutive Premier League seasons. Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal in the 3–0 win over Leeds United on September 12th. Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool in a 3–3 draw away from Brentford on September 25, 25th. In fewer games than any player in Liverpool history, he scored the milestone in 151 games, one game less than Roger Hunt who scored 100 goals in 152 games. Salah also climbed to the top of Liverpool's top-ten all-time scorers list thanks to the goal.

Salah defeated Atlético Madrid 32-0 in the UEFA Champions League on October 19th, becoming the first player in Liverpool history to score in nine consecutive games with two goals. His second goal, his 31st in the Champions League, saw him become Liverpool's top goalscorer in the tournament, defeating Steven Gerrard's record of 30 goals. Salah's first Liverpool player to score in ten consecutive games, as well as the first Liverpool player to score at three games in a row, made a record-breaking African player in three goals. He was also the first opposition player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford since Ronaldo in 2003, and the first to do so in Premier League history. He was the first player to score in Premier League first days in a row, and equaled the record for total goals set by Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, and Alan Shearer on the first day six seasons in a row.

Salah came off the bench in a UEFA Champions League match against Rangers on October 12th, before scoring three goals in the space of six minutes and twelve seconds that gave them a 1-0 win. He tied for the fastest Champions League hat-trick of all time by breaking Bafétimbi Gomis' record.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists it's vital to be 'back to winning ways' ahead of Premier League title charge despite their aggregate defeat by Atalanta… as he hails his side's 'desire and power'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
Jurgen Klopp was keen to focus on the positives after Liverpool's Europa League exit on Thursday, highlighting the importance of being 'back to winning ways' despite suffering a 3-1 defeat on aggregate against Atalanta. Admitting their shock 3-0 loss in the first leg at Anfield was a 'massive hurdle' to climb, Klopp praised his side's 'desire and power' after Mohamed Salah's penalty handed the Reds' a 1-0 win on the night in Bergamo. Like their Premier League title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City, who also crashed out of Europe following Champions League defeats by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively on Wednesday, Liverpool will now focus on their final six league games of the season in an effort to produce a fairytale ending for Klopp, who is leaving Anfield in the summer.

Liverpool lacked the 'belief' required to pull off comeback at Atalanta, says Peter Crouch after his former club crashed out of the Europa League as he insists Reds were 'disappointing'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
Peter Crouch accused Liverpool of running out of ideas after they failed to pull off a comeback and crashed out of the Europa League at the hands of Atalanta on Thursday night. The Reds entered the second leg of their quarter-final tie needing a miraculous result after losing 3-0 at home to their Italian opponents last week. They made the perfect start when Mohamed Salah put them ahead on the night from the penalty spot inside seven minutes. LEWIS STEELE AT STADIO DI BERGAMO: If you are going to fail, then make sure you fail beautifully. That was the rallying cry of Jurgen Klopp before Liverpool attempted to write another chapter into the book of inspirational comeback triumphs in Europe. In the end, this will have to go down as a failure. It was not quite beautiful, but it was a valiant performance that has healed some of the psychological wounds of the last fortnight and given fans hope that the Jurgen Klopp era can still have a magical ending. Winning on the night, via an early Mohamed Salah penalty, stopped the rot after two losses and a draw in the weeks before threatened to derail their season. Liverpool ended this tie with their heads held high but the damage had already been done and they left with nothing.
