Peter Kay Career

Early life and career

Kay was born and raised in Bolton, Lancashire, where he attended Mount Saint Joseph School, graduating with a one-GCSE in art. Michael's father, Michael, was an engineer who died well before Peter's career began. Deirdre (née O'Neill), an Irish Catholic from Coalisland, County Tyrone, was born in her faith, and Peter was brought up in her faith. He had been working in a toilet roll factory, a Netto store, Manchester Arena, a cash and carry store, a theater, a petrol station, and a bingo hall, which later inspired episodes of That Peter Kay Thing.

He began a degree program at the University of Liverpool in Drama, Theatre Studies, and English Literature. Despite struggling with the course, he started training at the University of Salford's Adelphi Campus School of Media, Music, and Performance, where he concentrated on a Higher National Diploma (HND) in media service (including stand-up) in media production (HND). Kay continued to receive an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from his alma mater on July 19, 2016.

In a 1997 episode of New Voices, a comedy film that showcased rising talent, Kay's first TV project was released. As two of his buddies threatened to rob a bar of their treasures, he appeared on "Two Minutes," written by Johanne McAndrew. He appeared as a delivery driver in the BBC drama Born to Run in 1997.

He made a one-off appearance on Coronation Street as a delivery driver for Fred Elliots Corner shop in 1997.

Kay made his television debut as a character comedy actor and did a stand-up set in 1998, appearing in a series of sketches for Granada TV's "Last Last Show" and "Roy Mills Films of Fun" on Granada television. Neil Fitzmaurice appeared in the film alongside several other local comedians who were later hired for his Channel 4 series.

After presenting "Peter Kay's World of Entertainment" on BBC Two's "The Sunday Show," Kay made an episode of Channel 4's Comedy Lab, "The Services," in 1998, which received the Royal Television Society award for best newcomer. This was my pilot for That Peter Kay Thing.

Kay and his co-writers, Neil Fitzmaurice and Dave Spikey, based their script "In the Club" as the basis for Phoenix Nights, which was an immediate success. The first series was shot in part at St Gregory's Social Club in Farnworth, Greater Manchester, where the exterior, hallways, and function suite were shot in a newly renovated social club run by Brian Potter.

He appeared in the first episode of Linda Green's 2002 film in which he appeared as a soulmate to the eponymous heroine. He has appeared in two films on Coronation Street. He appeared in the early 1990s as a shopfitter, but he co-wrote his scenes in January 2004, co-starring Shelley Unwin.

Kay continued to triumph in 2004 with Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere, a spin-off of Phoenix Nights. The show starred the bouncer characters from the series, portrayed by Kay and Paddy McGuinness, and at times featured other Phoenix Nights characters. By Channel 4, six episodes were produced and broadcast from November to December 2004. At the international television festival in Montreux in 2005, Kay was named Best Performance by an Actor.

Kay began appearing in a series of television commercials for UK brewery, John Smith's remark that imitates Phoenix Nights' style. Two lambs and "two lambs" were included in the story.

Channel 4's "Peter Kay Night" featured out-takes from Phoenix Nights (previously broadcast on DVD), a behind-the-scenes documentary "180 – A Tour Documentary" which followed Kay behind the scenes of his Mum Wants a Bungalow tour and screened the complete Peter Kay Live in Manchester Arena on April 17, 2006.

Kay appeared in the Doctor Who episode "Love & Monsters" on June 17, 2006. Victor Kennedy, the sinister, was discovered to be an alien disguised as the Abzorbaloff in disguise.

In 2008, Peter Kay's Got the Pop Factor, a BAFTA-winning comedy talent series, returned to television after a four-year absence, as well as a New Celebrity Superstar Strictly on Ice, which he co-wrote with Paul Coleman. On October 17, 2008, the two-hour special was shown on Channel 4 in the United States.

Kay received his second Royal Television Society award for his role as Geraldine McQueen, a transgender dinner lady from Ireland.

Peter Kay's Car Share, a sitcom, was broadcast in May 2015. The series was a hit, and a second series was ordered to debut in April 2017. In October 2015, he appeared in Cradle to Grave, another BBC sitcom based on Danny Baker's life as a child.

Cyril the Barman Kay in Blow Dry, a filmplay based on Simon Beaufoy's "Nobody Better." Kay, who does not like travelling outside of Northern England, claims he only took part in Blow dry because he knew it was going to be shot in Keighley, Bradford, West Yorkshire. However, he was disappointed to learn that his role was being shot in Shoreditch, Greater London.

Kay continued with "Is This the Way to) Amarillo" in 2007 with a cover version of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) originally by the Proclaimers, as well as Comic Relief. In 2009, Kay created "The Official BBC Children in Need Medley," an animation starring over 100 characters including Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Engineer, and the Paddington Bear. In addition, it included some of the characters' original voice artists, including Bernard Cribbins, Neil Morrissey, Ken Barrie, and Ringo Starr. On November 20, 2009, the video first appeared on BBC1.

In March 2011, Kay re-recorded "I Know Him So Well" re-recorded by singer Susan Boyle and Kay in the guise of Britain's Got the Pop Factor. Kay's video accompanied the single and faithfully parodied the original video shot for shot.

In February 2007, Kay played producer Roger DeBris in Mel Brooks' The Producers at Manchester's Palace Theatre for 120 performances.

On September 9, 2017, Kay performed in the "We Are Manchester" charity concert to celebrate Manchester Arena's reopening after the terrorist attack in May 2017. Before introducing the concert's headline act, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, he spoke to the audience.

Kay appeared on "Is This the Way to") Amarillo" in April 2020, where he introduced a new version of "Is This the Way to") Amarillo" in the BBC's Big Night In which he appeared. It was his first television appearance in two years.

Kay appeared on BBC Radio 2's Saturday morning show on January 2nd, 2021, with Cat Deeley hosting this 10am to 1pm show as Graham Norton had now left the slot.

Kay performed two sell out shows at the Manchester 02 Apollo in August 2021, including Laura Nuttall, 2021, who was fighting a hard brain tumour. Both shows sold out within 30 minutes.

Stand-up career

His first stand-up success was in the annual competition for North West Comedians, which was held in Manchester and hosted by Dave Spikey, who would later be the co-star and co-writer of Phoenix Nights. Kay was last on the bill and won the tournament, defeating Johnny Vegas. Kay has said that he wanted to work in comedy. However, he continued to work part-time as an usher at his local cinema in Bolton, but not yet performing stand-up locally. He was offered the opportunity to work another job or go full-time when the theater closed.

So You Think You're Funny After being accepted and rewarded on Channel 4's So You Think You're Funny? In 1997, his first semi-professional stand-up appearances were at the 1998 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he received a coveted Perrier Award nomination. During this period, he appeared at various other clubs, including London's Comedy Store.

Despite the fact that this resulted in a certain degree of public recognition, Kay's first live special Live at the Top of the Tower in 2000 was the first time he received national attention. During this time, he appeared on several talk shows, including Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Parkinson, the latter of which he had previously appeared on Friday Night as a warm-up. Phoenix Nights production also began at this time.

Kay announced a return to stand-up in November 2009, after seven years absence, with four (later extended to 20) dates at the Manchester Arena the following April with a display titled "The Tour That Doesn't Tour Tour Tour." Now On Tour is a tour that takes place in France. He was compelled to announce that the show would be touring shortly after demand for tickets. The tour debuted as the most profitable stand-up comedy tour of all time in January 2012, seeing a total of 1.2 million people.

When his handicapped patients were charged with bills worth up to £39 on premium phone lines booking tour tickets, Kay's tour was marginalized in the media. Rather than a question directly associated with Peter Kay or his production company, it was later revealed that this was a problem with ticket booking services associated with specific locations rather than a matter directly connected to him or his company.

Kay was included in the Independent's "Happy List" in 2009 as "simply Britain's best comedian," and as an exception to their general rule, she was also acknowledged in 2010 for raising funds for Children in Need.

With his first tour in eight years, Kay declared his intention to return to stand-up in November 2017. Will Travel be able to tour in 2018, beginning with the Genting Arena in April and then touring places such as SSE Hydro, Manchester Arena, The O2 Arena, Sheffield Arena, and Echo Arena Liverpool. Kay revealed on December 13, 2017 that he had cancelled all future work (including Peter Kay Live: Have Gags Will Travel) for personal reasons. He had requested that the media treat his and his families' privacy. As fans were charged 62p per minute to call premium rate phone lines to request ticket refunds, the tour was criticized once more regarding phone calls.

Kay's DVD sales in December 2011 stood at over ten million DVDs, a UK record for a comedian, and more than the total sales of best-selling films Avatar and Mamma Mia!

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
Fans of Take That and alternative rock outfit Keane have slammed the venue for its 'embarrassing' launch, which has seen three opening gigs featuring Peter Kay and Olivia Rodrigo delayed amid a flurry of technical and safety issues. Last night, the venue confirmed Take That's shows had been shifted to the rival AO Arena - which Co-op Live CEO Gary Roden, who quit his job last month, previously slated as an 'arena that is 30 years old'. While many fans have turned their ire to bosses at the venue and onto the Co-op itself - which is equally furious with the delays - some have tried to see the funny side by creating and sharing brutally funny memes about the snowballing disaster.
