Early life and education

Milford was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 23, 1948, and he grew up in Illinois. She is the granddaughter of Richard George Milford and Ann Marie (née Felt) Milford. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. Kim, her younger brother, was an actor and singer until his death from heart disease at the age of 37.

In 1972, she appeared on Broadway as Lenny Bruce, about the life of actor Lenny Bruce. Jenny Anderson appeared in the musical Shenandoah in 1974, based on the same 1965 film. Shenandoah debuted on Broadway on January 7, 1975, and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical. Milford was nominated for the first Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress for her appearance.

Milford appeared in Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone, a musical about artist Richard Faria, off-Broadway in 1971. Milford appeared in Felix (1974), Fishing (1981), Michael Weller (1981), and Territorial Rites (1983). She appeared in The Second Hottest Show in Town, a revue performance.
