Career
Bedelia studied ballet and appeared in a few productions with the New York City Ballet, including The Nutcracker, before becoming an actress. Clara was her only dancing role on screen in the George Balanchine Nutcracker (1958) television production. Bedelia appeared on CBS soap opera Love of Life from 1961 to 1967, portraying Sandy Porter. She appeared on Broadway, where she premiered Patty Duke in 1962, on Isle of Children's Island, and received a Theatre World Award for her role in My Sweet Charlie in 1966.
Bedelia made her film debut in The Gypsy Moths in 1969; later that year, she gained attention as the pregnant marathon dancer in They Shoot Horses. She appeared in Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), appeared in The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie (1972) and Between Friends (1973), and appeared in the comedy The Big Fix (1978). On television, she was the leading actress in ABC's short-lived drama series The New Land (1974).
Bedelia earned critical acclaim and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Heart Like a Wheel (1983), as drag racer Shirley Muldowney.
