Paul Montgomery Shore (born February 1, 1968) is an American actor, comedian, and film director best known for his appearances in several comedy films in the 1990s.
Shore began as a stand-up comedian at the age of 17, before becoming an MTV VJ in 1989.
This led to a small success in 1992's comedy film Encino Man.
In other films, Roles appeared in Son in Law (1993) and Bio-Dome (1996).
Early life
Shore was born Paul Montgomery Shore (1927–2019), a comedian who co-founded The Comedy Store with Rudy De Luca and Mitzi Shore (née Saidel), who owned and operated the Comedy Store from 1974 to her death after receiving it in her divorce agreement. Shore was born Jewish and grew up in Beverly Hills, California. In 1986, he graduated from Beverly Hills High School.
Career
A 17-year-old Shore made his stand-up debut at the Alley Cat Bistro in Culver City, inspired by his parents' work in comedy and show business. "Everyone else in school was filling out their SAT applications, but I only passed mine back." I knew I wasn't going to college because of the fact that I wasn't going to college. Sam Kinison introduced Shore and opened several of his sets. Shore created "The Weasel," a character on the comedy club circuit. Shore was "The Weasel" on the radio, heavily peppered with dudespeak slang such as "edged," "melons" and "grinding," as well as his catch phrase, "Hey, BU-DDY."
Shore's biggest break came as an on-air MTV VJ, a role he held from 1989 to 1994. Shore hosted Totally Pauly, who appeared on MTV's annual Spring Break parties at the height of his MTV fame. "Lisa, Lisa, the One I Adore," he also posted a music video.
Shore appeared in Encino Man, a modest success, in 1992. Shore was pushed to perform more custom-built cars, but those that were less popular were still in production: In the Army Now (1993), Jury Duty (1995), and Bio-Dome (1996). Both five films received scathing critiques, with the last three films receiving a score below 10% at Rotten Tomatoes; in addition, each of the films received less at the box office than the one before; "Shore skirts all categories in order to get a kind of transcendent fingernails-on-the-blackboard effect," film critic Roger Ebert said. Shore appeared in the eponymous TV show Pauly in 1997, but it was cancelled after five episodes were broadcast. Shore made a cameo appearance in the American rock band "N 2 Gether Now" as a pizza delivery man as well as a short appearance in "Break Stuff." Shore's film appearances have been recognized multiple times over the years, including Worst New Star of the Year for Encino Man, Worst New Star of the Decade for the 1990s, and Worst Actor of the Century (which he lost to Sylvester Stallone).
Shore produced, wrote, directed, and starred in Pauly Shore Is Dead, a semi-autobiographical mockumentary that earned him the best reviews of his career (47% on Rotten Tomatoes, far above his 1990s films), and starred in the short-lived reality television series Minding the Store in 2003. Shore appeared in Adopted, which sees him heading to Africa to adopt a child.
Shore appeared in episode ten of the television series Alone Together in March 2018.
Shore was announced in 2022 that he would be the voice of Pinocchio in the American dub of Pinocchio: A True Story. Following the trailer's unveiling in January, Shore says, "When will I leave on my own?" says Shore. "I've got the whole world to see." His unusual line delivery went viral. The reaction has been one of humour on the shore.
