Paul Newell Hester (1959-1959 – March 26, 2005) was an Australian singer and television presenter.
He was the drummer for Split Enz and Crowded House.
Early years
Hester was the older of two children (his younger sister is Carolyn) from Melbourne, Australia, and a jazz drummer mother. He was encouraged by his mother to play drums from an early age. His extrovert demeanor did not impress his teachers, and he left school early and tried a variety of occupations before beginning a musical career. He spent the majority of his teen years in the Dandenong Ranges, with the family's house on the edge of Sherbrooke Forest at the Sherbrooke/Kallista border. Thunder and Edges were two of Melbourne's most popular bands from 1976 to 1978. He co-founded Cheks, a Melbourne-based band who renamed Deckchairs Overboard when they moved to Sydney in 1982.
When he was playing regularly in Love Party, he worked with Deborah Conway of Do-Ré-Mi during the early 1980s. Hester spent time with Conway in Rose Amongst Thorns (1990–1991) and Ultrasound (1995).
Personal life
In the early 1980s, Hester was in a dormance with Deborah Conway of Do-Re-Mi. He later developed a friendship with photographer Mardi Sommerfeld and they had two children Olive and Sunday. They lived in Elwood, Victoria, in the suburb.
Hester died of suicide by hanging himself in Elsternwick Park, 45 years old. He had a divorce from Mardi Sommerfeld four years ago. Olive and Sunday, his two daughters, were 5 and ten years old at the time of his death. Hester's mother became ill a few years before his death and died in 2003. It was revealed to family and close friends that he had been suffering from depression for a few years prior to his death and was vulnerable to mood swings.
Hester was buried in Blackwood, Victoria's Central Highlands region. Neil Finn performed the classic Crowded House anthem solo "Better Be Home Soon" alongside a mini-biography and video of his life and achievements at the 2005 Aria Awards.
The local Port Phillip Council decided to name a path along the Elwood Canal in honor of Hester and to acknowledge his long association with the area. Hester died in October 2005. Hester Street, a police officer, was named after him as well as in his memory.
Kashan Vincent, a New Zealand-based singer, was Hester's girlfriend at the time of his death. Vincent sued his estate in July 2006, claiming a share of his net worth. Vincent said the two were engaged for 32 months and, although not cohabiting, they were engaged but had called off their wedding. The case was settled out of court by May 2007, with Vincent receiving a cheque and Hester's two children named as the sole beneficiaries of their father's estate.
