Phil Rudd Career

Career

Rudd was notified of AC/DC's rhythm section auditions by his former Coloured Balls bandmate Trevor Young (no resemblance to AC/DC's Young brothers). Rudd had requested Buster Brown bassist Geordie Leach to accompany him to the auditions, but Leach declined due to other commitments. Rudd auditioned and was hired immediately. Rudd's drumming style complimented the band's style of music and made him a key component of AC/DC's sound from 1975 to 1983. In 1976, the band migrated to the United Kingdom and continued a hectic schedule of international touring and recording.

Rudd had "a little bit of a nervous breakdown" and had to spend a long time with a shrink, according to a letter sent by AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott to his sister Valerie during the 1978 Powerhouse tour. It was awful, but the band was able to get over it quickly enough not to upset the others. We had to handle him with kid gloves for a while, but it's now good. The letter was later purchased by the Western Australian government in 2019, which was intended to be displayed at the State Library of Western Australia.

Bon Scott, an AC/DC vocalist, died in 1980, an event that left Rudd's close friend deeply saddened. Following the release of the Flick of the Switch album, he left the band in 1983. The split was largely due to his own personal issues as well as a dispute with the band's rhythm guitarist and founder Malcolm Young, which allegedly escalated to physical levels. Rudd had completed his contributions to the album, but session drummer B.J. Wilson was hired to help with the recording, but Wilson's drum parts were never used. Rudd's permanent replacement was recruited Simon Wright and appeared in the album's music videos.

Rudd retired from Tauranga, New Zealand, where he purchased a helicopter from him after his firing. Rudd's departure from AC/DC wasn't announced until the eve of their US and Canada tour in 1983. "Phil Rudd leaves AC/DC [...] to spend more time with his family and his cars," it said in the last few pages of Circus Magazine's October 1983 edition. In 1983, Rudd married a New Zealander. "We're a rowdy bunch, but we don't fight with each other," guitarist Angus Young was quoted in the same article. In a Hit Parader interview from the same period as Phil Rudd, a vivacious musician or drummer, was born. If we didn't want to work, none of us would have to work [sic]; Phil chose that route].

Rudd has written, "I raced cars, flew helicopters, became a fisherman, and planted some crops," he said of his time away from AC/DC. I lived in New Zealand, which was great; nice and quiet with no one bothering me." Rudd continued to play drums "when I wanted to rather than when I had to," and he's owned his own recording studio.

Rudd was called by AC/DC when they toured New Zealand in 1991 in support of their Razors Edge album, asking if he'd be interested in joining them for a casual jam session. Rudd accepted their bid. Rudd's reinstatement of the band at the time was a mystery, but after the recording of the "Big Gun" single for the Last Action Hero movie soundtrack, he was welcomed to return to AC/DC in 1994.

Rudd was welcomed back by AC/DC after Chris Slade's time as the band's drummer. Slade was lauded for his appearance and technical ability, but the band maintained that a certain groove had been missing from AC/DC's music since Rudd's departure in 1983. After returning to the band, he appeared on five AC/DC studio albums, Ballbreaker, Stiff Upper Lip, Black Ice, Rock or Bust, and Power Up, with Black Ice being the band's biggest hit on the charts since 1981. For those About to Rock We Salute You.

Rudd was replaced by fellow AC/DC drummer Chris Slade for the band's 2015-2016 Rock or Bust tour due to legal issues resulting in his house arrest.

AC/DC released a snapshot featuring Rudd on drums, as well as a snapshot of him, Angus, Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams, and Stevie Young reunited in September 2020.

On August 29, Rudd's first solo album, Head Job, was released. Allan Badger (bass guitar and vocals) and Geoffrey Martin (guitar) appeared on the album together with Rudd.

Rudd began a tour of Europe in 2017 with the Phil Rudd Band, which featured Badger, Martin, British bass guitarist John Proctor, and New Zealand guitarist Mike "Mutt" Furness. On March 31, 2017, the tour began in Oslo, Norway, and visited Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Austria, Austria, Hungary, Hungary, Prague, and Slovakia. For 2018, the second half of the tour was postponed and then scrapped.

Rudd had rejoined AC/DC on September 30, 2020, after two years of rumors that he, fellow bandmates Brian Johnson and Cliff Williams would be back.
