Paul Breitner Career

Playing career

Breitner's football career spanned 1970 to 1983, mainly for Bayern Munich (1970–74 and 1978–83) and Real Madrid (1974–77), with one season playing for Eintracht Braunschweig. He started off as a free roaming left back, with the ability to block an attacker in his own penalty zone as well. He migrated to midfield and became one of the top midfielders in the early 1980s throughout his career.

Breitner's longest and profitable career began at age 21 in 1972 as part of the winning German Championship team. He claimed the 1974 FIFA World Cup two years later. The final was played in Munich against the Netherlands, with Breitner scoring the first German goal on a penalty kick. He, Franz Beckenbauer, and Berti Vogts formed a strong team at the back, blocking the Dutch from having many scoring opportunities. Following the World Cup and withdrew from the West German squad, he stayed off the side until being compelled to return by Jupp Derwall in 1981. Breitner is one of only four footballers to have scored in two separate World Cup final matches, sharing the honour with Pelé, Vava, and Zinedine Zidane. He won this against the Netherlands in 1974 and 1982 against Italy.

Breitner won seven National Championships with Bayern Munich (1972, 1973, 1974, 1981, 1980, 1981) and Real Madrid (1974), as well as the German (1971, 1982) and Spanish cups (1975). Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and he made such a strong one-two punch that they were often referred to as Breitnigge during his time with Bayern Munich.

Breitner's self was identified as part of the 68ers (the 1968 protesters in Germany and elsewhere). He was often chastised by more traditional or conservative football fans for his radicalism and "revolutionary" attitude, as well as his propensity for expressing strong views on key political and social topics, particularly during a period when Berlin Wall walls were still divided. He was seen carrying "The Little Red Book" from Mao Zedong to training. Breitner notably dismissed his leftist leanings after 1974. Johan Cruyff, the Dutch World Cup champion, had already stated that he would not play for a team linked to "fascist" General Franco, Breitner yearned to play for Real Madrid and signed the transfer papers in 1974. He gained notoriety for spending heavily on houses and cars, as well as being involved in lucrative industry.

He sparked a lot of controversy in Germany when he refused to pay him the 150,000 Deutsche Mark (or more generous for some Germans at the time) than many Germans considered to be "scandalously high" sum, which many Germans regard as a "scandalously large" – sum. His long hair had been viewed as a sign of rebellion in the previous years. Breitner had angered many followers with his move to Real Madrid, Spain's biggest club giants. After a fruitful time in Madrid and resigned as a player in 1983, he returned to Germany.

World Cup: Brazil, Holland and Italy among greatest teams who didn't lift the trophy

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 7, 2022
Only a select group of footballers will qualify to play at a World Cup. An even more elite group is those that were able to win the world's biggest tournament. After all, only eight nations have lifted the trophy in almost a century of history. Any player faces the greatest challenge and the holy grail. However, there have been some truly outstanding teams who came so close to winning it and then stopped so far. Sportsmail looks at some of the best teams that did not win the World Cup in Qatar ahead of the tournament.
