Playing career
Best was regularly chastised with racist chanting from the terraces, but Upton Park made him a fan favorite. He was a solid, versatile center forward with the ability of the traditional English centre forward, but dispossess were impossible unless he had the ball and was excellent in the air. In a 1–1 home draw against Arsenal on August 25, 1969 at the age of 18, he made his West Ham United debut. In a 4–2 victory over Halifax Town on September 3, 1969, his first goal for the Hammers came during League Cup play. In 1973, Best was fired after an injured Bobby Ferguson in a goal against Leeds United. Between August 1969 and 1976, the best played 218 games and scored 58 goals for West Ham over seven seasons.
Best was also involved in the Dutch Elyrd, where he was generally regarded as a failure, scoring only 3 goals in 23 games, and the North American Soccer League for Tampa Bay Rowdies, Toronto Blizzard, and Portland Timbers. In a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers, he scored an 88th minute goal to win the Rowdies' first NASL championship. He led the Rowdies to the 1976 indoor championship and was named tournament MVP. He was the Rowdies' top scorer for the short 1976 indoor season, with 11 goals and 5 assists for 27 points.
