Patrick Nyarko (born January 15, 1986 in Kumasi) is a Ghanai footballer who has competed for D.C. United in Major League Soccer for the first time.
Career
Nyarko, a star forward and three-time All-ACC pick for the Virginia Tech Hokies soccer team, which lost to Wake Forest in the National Semifinals, after coming to the United States in 2005.
Nyarko, who completed his Virginia Tech career with 31 goals, was named by coach Oliver Weiss as "the most remarkable player I've ever coached" and is regarded as the best soccer player in Virginia Tech history. When the coach was on a recruiting trip to Ghana, Nyarko first encountered Weiss.
He scored the lone goal of his team's deciding victory over then-#4 North Carolina in Nyarko's freshman year. Tech ranked as the top in the polls and earned its second trip to the NCAA tournament in history. Nyarko was named the first-year Atlantic Coast Conference freshman of the year and was selected to the all-ACC team.
Nyarko was named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 2007 after the Hokies finished eighth in the final AP poll and competed in the National Semifinals of the 2007 Division I Men's College Cup. In 2018, his Hokies work led to his induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
Nyarko has decided to forego his senior years and enter the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. Nyarko was selected 7th overall by the Chicago Fire, widely expected to be the first pick in the draft.
On June 15, 2008, he made his MLS debut against FC Dallas, scoring his first MLS goal against Chivas USA.
Nyarko was traded to Washington, D.C., in exchange for a second round 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick after eight seasons with Chicago. Nyarko scored his first goal for United on April 2, 2016, against the San Jose Earthquakes. Concussion held him off for three months of the season. Following the 2017 season, he was out of work with United and was considering retirement due to brain injury from eight separate concussions.
Nyarko was called up to the Ghana squad to face Chile. Nyarko made his Ghana debut against Chile on February 29, 2012 at the PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.
