Michu Life

Miguel Pérez Cuesta (born 21 March 1986), also known as Michu (Spanish pronunciation: [mit]), is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a striker or attacking midfielder.

He started playing for Real Oviedo, later representing Celta and Rayo Vallecano, making his La Liga debut with the latter in 2011–12. In 2012, he signed with Swansea City, scoring 22 goals in all competitions and winning the League Cup for his first season.

Despite performances that earned him his international debut for Spain in 2013, Michu fell out of favour at Swansea and was released in November 2015.

Personal life

Michu bought shares in former club Oviedo in November 2012 as they continued to raise €2 million to remain afloat in the Spanish third division, as well as fellow Premier League stars Santi Cazorla and Juan Mata. "It's my hometown club, a club I love, so I hope it will be enough," he said on the official Swansea website about his love for his former club.

Hernán, Michu's older brother, was also a footballer. He too was groomed at Oviedo before playing for local teams and then moving to a managerial position; both players appeared together at Langreo in 2015-2016.

Club career

Michu was born in Oviedo, Asturias. He began with Real Oviedo in the lower leagues, and he transferred to Celta de Vigo B in Segunda División B in the middle of 2007; midway through his first season, he earned his first-team call up, and spent the season in the Segunda División starting lineup.

Michu stayed at Celta in mid-January 2010, after being near to losing Birmingham City-bound Mchel. He scored 12 goals for the Galicians in his two second-level campaigns.

Michu scored the game's only goal in the first leg of the promotion play-offs against Granada CF at home on June 8; his side was disqualified (4–5).

Michu signed a two-year contract with Rayo Vallecano, the newly promoted to the top division on July 27, 2011, after his contract with Celta came to an end. In a 1–1 away draw with Athletic Bilbao, he made his debut in the tournament on August 28th.

Michu was one of the best national scorers in his first season (joint-ninth overall, best in the midfielder position), Racing de Santander (4–2, home) and Real Madrid, both losing 6–2 away.

Michu signed a three-year deal with Swansea City in the Premier League on July 20, 2012. The club was looking for someone to fill the hole left by Gylfi Sigursson after his departure in a 4–2–3–1 formation. On his release, he was given the number 9 shirt and began playing as a striker.

Michu scored twice and provided an assist for Scott Sinclair in a 5–0 away win over Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on his debut in league on August 18th. The first of his goals was also the first scored in the new top-flight season, and he later referred to his debut as "incredible."

Michu maintained his top-scoring charts by scoring the second in a 3–0 home loss to West Ham United on August 25th and the second in a 2–2 draw against Sunderland the following matchday.

Michu scored his first FA Cup goal on January 6, 2013, coming off the bench in an eventual 2–2 home draw against Arsenal in the third round and finding the net a mere 73 seconds after entering the pitch. In the semi-finals of the Football League Cup, he continued this with another win for his team at Chelsea.

Michu's four-year contract began on January 23, 2013. He scored second in a 5–0 victory over Bradford City on February 24 to help the team win the League Cup for the first time in history, his 19th official goal of the campaign. Michu moved to S.C. on July 17, 2014, on loan. Napoli is a member of Serie A, with the option of a permanent transfer. In a 2–1 victory over Genoa, he made his debut for his new team on August 31. He was an 85th-minute substitute for Lorenzo Insigne in an 85th-minute victory.

Michu's injury limited him to six competitive matches for the Italians, and he hadn't appeared for Swansea since April 2014, with his deal set to end in the following year.

Michu joined Asturian amateurs UP Langreo right after leaving Swansea. He returned to Oviedo, his first club, on August 19, 2016 for a one-year contract.

Michu officially announced his retirement from professional football on July 25, 2017, at the age of 31. He said last week that he would like to remain connected with football.

Michu was appointed as director of football of Langreo, where his brother served as head coach, on June 3rd. He resigned as the Oviedo's technical secretary on April 3rd, and he stayed on the post. He decided to resign his employment to join Burgos CF in the former role in December of this year.

International career

Michu was then called up to the national team as a replacement for the injured David Villa on October 6, 2013. He made his debut five days later against Belarus in Palma de Mallorca, where he won by 2:1 over 2 goals).
