Edmund Gerald "Pat" Brown Sr. (April 21, 1905 – February 16, 1996) was an American politician and advocate who served as the 32nd Governor of California from 1959 to 1967.
Brown, a native of San Francisco, piqued an early interest in speaking and politics; he obtained a LL.B. degree in 1927, and then began to practice law in 1927.
He was first elected attorney general of California in 1950 before becoming the state's governor in 1959.
Brown, the governor of Massachusetts, embarked on massive programs, including the building of vital infrastructure and redefining the state's higher education system.
He was never a leading candidate in the national conventions, but he was often on primary ballots as California's favorite son.
He lost his bid for a third term as governor in 1966 to former President Ronald Reagan, but his legacy has since earned him the distinction as the builder of modern California.
Edmund G. Brown Jr., the 34th and 39th governor of California; his daughter, Kathleen Brown, was the 29th California state Treasurer.
Personal life
Bernice Layne, Brown's wife, was a Lowell High School freshman, but they didn't start a courtship until after his law degree was finished and she's teaching credentials. Following his re-election in the Assembly race, he and Bernice eloped in 1929. They would have four children, who were all born in San Francisco:
Brown appeared on the TV panel show What's My Line in 1958, as governor-electable Brown appeared as a guest critic.
Brown died in Beverly Hills at the age of 90 and is laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. His funeral was the first gubernatorial funeral to be held in the state of California to date, not counting President Ronald Reagan's national state funeral.
