P Bharathiraja Career

Film career

Bharathiraja began his film career as anassination to Kannada filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal's Puttanna Kanagal. Later, he worked with P. Pullaiah, M. Krishnan Nair, Avinasi Mani, and A. Jagannathan. His first film, 16 Vayathinile, for which he wrote the script, defies then existing practice to create a new breed of village cinema. The film is now considered a landmark in Tamil cinema history. Bharathiraja said "This film was supposed to be a black & white art film made with the support of National Film Development Corporation," but it turned out to be a commercially successful color film and a starting point for many major careers. Kizhake Pogum Rail's next film had similar success, but it did result in a slew of complaints that Bharathiraja was only able to please village audiences. This led him to the creation of Sigappu Rojakkal, a psychopathic woman-hater that was completely westernized in terms of both conception and production.

With an experimental film Nizhalgal (1980) and the action thriller Tik Tik Tik Tik Tik (1981), Bharathiraja demonstrated his versatility and refusal to be tied to one specific genre. However, rural themes remained his strongest suit as his best hits in the 1980s: Alaigal Oivathillai (1981), Mann Vasanai (1983) and Muthal Mariyathai (1985) were two popular love tales set against a village backdrop, but rural themes were unquestionably strong love tales. Sivaji Ganesan, the lead, appeared in Muthal Mariyathai, portraying a middle-aged village head. Radha is a poor young woman who moves into his village for a living. Bharathiraja teaches the love that divides these two humans apart not only by age but also by gender and class.

Vedham Pudhithu addressed the caste issue in a more effective manner. The film's plot was seamless, with Sathyaraj playing Balu Thevar. It includes some of Bharathiraja's signature touches as well as several ground-breaking scenes. However, it does follow the anti-Brahmin trend in Tamil films – in this respect, it differed from his earlier success Alaigal Oiyvadhillai, where the caste and faith factor was given a more balanced treatment. Bharathiraja has been able to re-invent his film-making techniques for the 1990s. The commercial success of Kizhakku Cheemaiyile and the numerous accolades that Karuththamma received stand as testament to his ability to thrill the younger generation as well. In 1996, Bharathiraja received another National Award for Anthimanthaarai.

Bharathiraja was commissioned to produce two films in late 1996, with Sarathkumar-starrer Vainkapatta Bhoomi announcing in October. Following this month, he began to work on a film called Siradhillai, starring Napolean, Heera Rajgopal, and Prakash Raj. Both films were eventually shelved. He intended to revive Vainkapatta Bhoomi with Cheran in late 2004, but the plan didn't materialize.

Kadal Pookal, a 2001 film that was nominated for Best Screenplay at the National Film Award for the Best Screenplay of the year, was a winner in the National Film Award for Best Screenplay. Bhagyaraj, a well-known Tamil film producer, was one of his assistant directors. In 2008, Bharathiraja made his television debut with the film Thekkathi Ponnu, which aired on Kalaignar television. He went on to produce two other series, Appanum Aalum and Muthal Mariyathai, which were directed by the same channel.

During early 2016, Bharathiraja was embroiled in a court dispute with director Bala over the making of a film titled Kutra Parambarai, but neither filmmaker nor director ever made their respective films. He continued to write a film starring Vasanth's uncle, Ritwik Varun, and Vikram's nephew, but the film was cancelled due to two schedules. Bharathirajaa was filming in Bharathirajah, which narrates events after the decision to demonetize certain banknotes in India.
