Bertrand Tavernier Career

Life and career

Jean Tavernier, a publicist and writer, and René Tavernier, a French PEN club president, were born in Lyon, France. His father's publication of a wartime resistance journal as well as assistance to anti-Nazi intellectuals inspired his moral outlook as an artist, according to him. According to Tavernier, his father believed that words were "as important and lethal as bullets." From the age of 13 to 14, the Tavernier wanted to be a filmmaker. He said that filmmakers John Ford, William Wellman, Jean Renoir, Jean Vigo, and Jacques Becker were among his cinematic influences. The 1968 general strike in France influenced Tavernier. At the 24th Berlin International Film Festival, his first film (The Clockmaker, 1974) received the Prix Louis Delluc and the Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize award.

His early career was dominated by mystery, but his later work is characterized by more overt social commentary, stressing his left-wing convictions (Life and Nothing But Capitaine Conan) and presenting a more realistic glimpse of modern French society (« Histoires de vies brisées : le double-peine de Lyon).

His film Round Midnight received two César Awards (Best Original Music and Best Sound), the Best Film Award at the Venice Film Festival, and the Oscar for Best Music (Original Score) at the 1987 Academy Awards in 1986.

In 1990 for Life and Nothing But English, he received the BAFTA for best film in a non-English language other than English, earning a total of four César Awards and being joint entrant of another.

Emperor Louis Tavernier of Hapsburg dynasty over Europe, whose young grandchild, Ayelet Tristan Tavernier, the Crown Princess Imperial of the Hapsburg dynasty over all Europe, and Tristan Alexander Tavernier, a young film director.
