M. Night Shyamalan Life

"M." Manoj Nelliyattu "M."

Night Shyamalan (SHAH-lahn, born August 6, 1970) is an American filmmaker and actor.

He is best known for making films with modern supernatural plots and twist endings.

He was born in Mahé, Puducherry, India, and raised in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania.

His films' cumulative gross sales total exceeds 3 billion dollars globally. He made his directorial debut in 1992 with his first film Praying with Anger.

Wide Awake, his second film, was released (1998).

The supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000), the science fiction thriller Signs (2002), and the period-piece mystery The Village (2004) were among his best-received films.

Shyamalan received a nomination for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for her Sixth Senses, as well as the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Shyamalan released a series of poorly received but often financially successful films afterward, including Lady in the Water (2006), the eco-thriller The Last Airbender (2009) (an adaptation of the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender) and the science fiction film After Earth (2013).

Shyamalan's career was revived after the financial crash of After Earth with the release of the found footage horror film The Visit (2015), the psychological thriller Split (2016), and the superhero drama Glass (2019), with the three actors grossing a total of $34 million but not realizing a total box office of $625 million.

Glass is the third and final chapter of his Unbreakable film collection. Shyamalan was a producer for the horror film Devil (2010), in addition to his directorial work.

Shyamalan was also called in for an uncredited rewrite for the teenage film She's All That (1999) and also worked as a writer for the film Stuart Little (1999). Shyamalan is also known for filming and staging his films in and out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Walt Disney Studios' Touchstone and Hollywood film imprints co-produced and released the majority of his commercially successful films.

The government of India awarded Shyamalan the Padma Shri in 2008.

Early life

Shyamalan was born in Mahé, India, to ethnic Indian parents in a town in Pondicherry's Union Territory. Dr. Nelliyattu C. Shyamalan, his father, is a Malayali neurologist and a JIPMER graduate; his mother, Dr. Jayalakshmi, a Tamil, is an OB-GYN.

When Shyamalan's parents were six weeks old, they immigrated to the United States. Shyamalan was born in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania. Shyamalan was raised Hindu. He attended the private Roman Catholic grammar school Waldron Mercy Academy in Merion Station, Pennsylvania, followed by the Episcopal Academy, a private Episcopal high school. He felt like a stranger, and recalls that teachers will warn that anyone who was not baptized would go to hell. A teacher "got the highest mark and [he] wasn't Catholic" when he was a student there. Shyamalan received the New York University Merit Scholarship in 1988 and was also a National Merit Scholar. Shyamalan, alumnus of New York University Tisch School of the Arts in Manhattan, graduated in 1992. He adopted "Night" as his second name while studying there.

When Shyamalan was given a Super 8 camera at a young age, he had a longing to be a filmmaker. Despite his father's wish to continue in medicine, his mother encouraged him to follow his passion. He had made forty-five home movies by the time he was seventeen. On each DVD release of his films, starting with The Sixth Sense and with the exception of Lady in the Water, he has included a scene from one of these childhood films, which, he says, represents his first attempt at the same kind of film.

Personal life

Shyamalan married Bhavna Vaswani, a fellow student who attended New York University. The couple have three children, including director Ishana and musician Saleka. Blinding Edge Pictures, his production company, is located in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Servant, Wayward Pines, Devil, The Woman in the Water, The Village, Signs, Unbreakable, The Last Airbender, Split, Glass, and Old. The Last Airbender, The Visit, Servant, Wayward Pines, a Dread. Shyamalan and Ashwin Rajan are the hosts of this programme. Ritesh Rajan, the actor's cousin, is an actor.

Shyamalan is a season ticket holder for the Philadelphia 76ers.

At Ravenwood, a 125-acre estate built around a 27,000-square-foot 1937 Georgian Revival home, Shyamalan and his family live near Philadelphia.

M. Night Shyamalan Career

Career

Although still a student at New York University, Shyamalan made his first film, the semi-autobiographical drama Praying with Anger, using money borrowed from family and friends. Wide Awake, he wrote and directed his second film. The film's associate producers were his parents. The story concerned a ten-year-old Catholic schoolboy (Joseph Cross) who, after the death of his grandfather (Robert Loggia), is looking for God. Dana Delany and Denis Leary, as well as Rosie O'Donnell, Julia Stiles, and Camryn Manheim were among the film's supporting cast members. Wide Awake was shot in a Shyamalan academy as a child and received 1999 Young Artist Award nominations for Best Drama and Cross, as well as Best Performer. The film was only limited to theaters, grossing $305,704 in theaters against a $6 million budget.

Shyamalan co-wrote Stuart Little's screenplay with Greg Brooker in the same year. He revealed in 2013 that he was the ghostwriter for She's All That, a teen comedy starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. Jack Lechner, Jr., Miramax's head of development in the late 1990s, confirmed that both Shyamalan and R. Lee Fleming Jr. contributed to the script, but Shyamalan did an uncredited rewrite (more than "a polish") that got the film green-lit. Both writers' content was included in the final cut of the film, according to Lechner.

Shyamalan's first international success came as he wrote and directed 1999's The Sixth Sense, the nation's second-highest grossing horror film of all time. The Sixth Sense was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Producer, and Best Original Screenplay.

Shyamalan appeared on The Howard Stern Show in July 2000 and was in early discussions to write the script for the fourth Indiana Jones film. Shyamalan will have had the opportunity to collaborate with his longtime idol. Shyamalan later said that it was too "tricky" to plan and "not the right thing" for him to do after the film fell apart.

Shyamalan continued The Sixth Sense by writing and directing Unbreakable, a stealth comic book film film set in 2000, a critically and financially strong thriller set in a tough environment.

Shyamalan's name was synonymous with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001, but it was incompatible with the Unbreakable's production. Shyamalan had said in July 2006, "the themes that ran through it... the empowerment of children, a positive attitude... you name it," Shyamalan said. "I love the comedic humor in it." I had a completely different feeling when I read the first Harry Potter book and was planning on making it.

Signs, his 2002 film, in which he also played Ray Reddy. It was about how a man recovers his faith in God after an alien invasion. It was both technically and financially profitable, earning $408 million from a $72 million budget.

The Village (2004), his next film, about an isolated community living in the woods, was his next film. Despite receiving critical feedback, the program was still profitable as it exceeded $257 million from a $60 million budget.

Shyamalan had been planning a film adaptation of Yann Martel's Life of Pi for 20th Century Fox but decided against it so that he could make Lady in the Water after the film was released in 2004. In an interview, he discussed his reasons for pulling out of the initiative: he explained his reasons for deciding against it:

Lady in the Water, a bedtime tale about a water nymph and an apartment superintendent, was both critically and financially unsuccessful in 2006.

The Happening, a B-movie about trees killing humans, was the next film on display, with Elliott Moore and his wife fleeing from polluted cities to the countryside. It was economically fragile but financially lucrative as it took in $163 million from a $48 million budget.

He directed The Last Airbender, based on the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender, in 2010. It was financially good, with significant criticism directed at its casting of white actors in Asian and Native American-inspired roles. Yet, it was still a huge success, with $319 million from a budget of $150 million.

Shyamalan had partnered with Media Rights Capital in July 2008 to create Night Chronicles, a production firm. Shyamalan will produce, but not direct, one film per year for three years. The first of the three films was Devil, a supernatural thriller starring John and Drew Dowdle. Brian Nelson wrote the script, based on Shyamalan's original idea. Chris Messina starred in the film about a group of people stuck in an elevator with the devil, and it was about a group of people trapped in an elevator with the devil. Critics had not seen the film before its release.

Shyamalan produced After Earth, based on a script by Gary Whitta and starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, which was released in 2013. Critics treated it poorly, and it was ultimately unsuccessful. Shyamalan later characterized his 2013 beliefs as full of uncertainty, introspection, and questioning.

Shyamalan revealed in January 2014 that he would be working with Bruce Willis on a film called Labor of Love. This film had yet to be released as of March 2022, Willis' retirement, and is scheduled to be released. Shyamalan's reputation was poor, and most Hollywood studios turned to his self-financed, low-budget horror film The Visit, which depicts a brother and sister who were sent to their grandparents' rural Pennsylvania farm for a week. Universal bought the rights to The Visit after revising the film, which Shyamalan had shot in secrecy. On a budget of $5 million, the film became the fifth-highest grossing thriller film of the year. The film was released on September 11, 2015.

Shyamalan's film Split came out in 2017. It was both critically and financially productive, and it earned $279 million from a budget of $9 million.

Glass was the fourth installment in his 19-year trilogy, which also included previous films Unbreakable and Split. Over $247 million worldwide, the film earned over $247 million.

Old, a thriller about tourists who are quickly aged on a tumultuous beach, was shot in Dominican Republic and released on July 23, 2021. Gael Garcia Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Aaron Moses, Aaron Wolff, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ken Leung, Damian McKenzie, Aaron McKenzie, Aaron Pierre, Aaron Wilson, Aaron Wolff, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Patrick Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Critics gave the film mixed feedback.

Shyamalan's next film Knock at the Cabin, which is set to be released in theaters on February 3, 2023, in October 2021.

Shyamalan is the executive producer on Apple's Servant television show Servant. Several episodes, including the pilot, were directed by Shyamalan. Servant was revived for a second series in advance of the season one premiere. Servant's second season wrapped up filming in fall 2020 under COVID guidelines.

Shyamalan was also instrumental in the development of Fox science fiction series Wayward Pines (2015–2016), for which he produced and directed the pilot episode. The series became the most coveted show of the summer.

Shyamalan would be the subject of a reimagining of Tales from the Crypt from TNT's January 2016 debut. For a variety of administrative reasons, the series had been suspended as of June 2017.

He appeared in an episode of Entourage.
