The 2011–12 season was John Twente's greatest breakthrough, as he took over Co Adriaanse's starting position and didn't lose it even after competition for the left forward position, as Nacer Chadli returned from injury. He also ranked with six assists in the UEFA Europa League group stage assist rankings. In Twente's home game in the Europa League against Odense BK on November 3, John took all three points in a 3–2 victory. According to Football Leaks, John signed for Portuguese club Benfica on a five-year contract that included a €45 million release provision for a transfer fee of €9.1 million. It was rumored that 80 percent of the undisclosed went to Doyen Sports, a sports investment firm. Following his struggle to find his place in the first team during his first months in Lisbon, John became a regular starter or used substitute in Benfica's 2012–13 season, which included appearances in UEFA Europa League and Portuguese Cup finals.

On January 17, 2014, he was loaned to Hamburger SV for the remainder of the 2013–14 season.
