Nicholas Schubring Saputra (born 24 February 1984) is an Indonesian actor, model, and television presenter of German-Javanese descent.

He is best known for his role as Rangga in the 2002 cult classic romance Ada Apa dengan Cinta, a role he reprised in Ada Apa Dengan Cinta. 2.He received the Best Leading Actor in Indonesian Movie Awards in 2005 for his role in Janji Joni (2005) and Citra Award for Best Leading Actor in Gie (2005).

Early life and education

Nicholas Saputra was born in Germany to a German father and an Indonesian-Javanese mother. Saputra continued his studies in University of Indonesia after graduating from SMA Negeri 8 Jakarta high school. He was deemed as one of the vainest students in high school. He has a degree in architecture from the University of Indonesia.

Personal life

Nicholas Saputra is the only child in the family's household. Dian Sastrowardoyo, a frequent collaborator, and University of Indonesia alumni, he and his frequent co-star/collaborator Dian Sastrowardoyo are the best friends and University of Indonesia alumni. Mariana Renata, a romantic actor from 2005 to 2006, was romantically linked to Janji Joni.

Saputra is a passionate traveler who has explored North and Latin America, Europe, Africa, and India, and of course, Indonesia. He lived in a tiny village in Flores and was on a boat that nearly capsized. In March 2005, three months after the disaster, he became an environmentalist after joining an NGO to volunteer for the Aceh tsunami's aftermath. In 2006, he obtained his diving license.

Saputra has been a member of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), since 2008, when he brought classrooms and a traveling library to the area of Raja Ampat, Papua. In Indonesia, he is still involved in rainforest and orangutan conservation efforts.

With Ada Apa Dengan Cinta, Saputra co-founded Tanakhir Films. Mandy Marahimin, a publicist, was born in 2013. The company's emphasis is on cultural and environmental filmmaking. He collaborated with artist Angki Puro on a show titled "Post Jungle-Tangkahan" about the life of Sumatran elephants in 2017. Saputra's photographs were also on display in the exhibition.

Saputra constructed an eco friendly lodge on the border of Mount Leuser National Park in Tangkahan, North Sumatra, to promote the local's ecotourism, in addition to being a dedicated environmentalist and active in conservation campaigns.

Career

Nicholas Saputra began his modeling career as a runway model and has appeared in magazine covers since high school. When playing baseball in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium when he was 15, he was spotted by a youth newspaper.

Saputra, an inexperienced actor with no experience in the entertainment industry, was cast in Rudy Soedjarwo's cult classic romance blockbuster Ada Apa dengan Cinta. Dian Sastrowardoyo, the opposite actress who was first published in 2002, was released in 2002. In the Indonesian Film Festival, he received his first Citra (the Indonesian equivalent to the Oscars) nomination for his role in Rangga, an indifferent and aloof student who fell in love with the most popular girl in high school. He has since been aspired to film work in Indonesia and Malaysia. Saputra remembers his career's inception: he recalls:

Saputra was portrayed in Biola Tak Berdawai, written and directed by Sekar Ayu Asmara in 2003. The film premiered at the Cairo International Film Festival, where it earned a Best New Director award and the Naguib Mahfouz award for Best Screenplay. It was also Indonesia's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards. Saputra was named Best Actor at the 2003 Bali International Film Festival for his role in the film.

Saputra earned his second leading role in Joko Anwar's 2005 romantic comedy Janji Joni as a roll film delivery man, opposite Mariana Renata, which earned him the Most Popular Actor award at the 2005 Indonesian Movie Awards. The film was shown in the Sydney Film Festival and Pusan International Film Festival. In the biographical film Gie, directed by Riri Riza, he starred as a Chinese Indonesian protester Soe Hok Gie in the same year. Soe Hok Gie's performance at the 2005 Indonesian Film Festival, two Best Actor awards at the 2005 Indonesian Film Festival, and 2006 Bandung Film Festival was highly coveted, and he received the Most Favorite Actor award at the 2006 MTV Indonesian Movie Awards. The film was submitted by Indonesia to the 79th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

Saputra made his first television appearances on Channel Vasia, hosting segments such as The Ticket and Screentime in 2007, and he served as the co-presenter at the 2007 Asian Film Awards alongside Lee Byung Hun and Daniel Wu. He appeared in Riri Riza's 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya the same year. At the 2007 Bangkok International Film Festival, Best Direction and Best Indonesian Film Award were given to the film, while Saputra was nominated for Best Actor and Best Leading Actor at the 2009 Guardians e-Awards.

Saputra appeared in omnibus film Cinta Setaman in 2008 and reunited with Dian Sastrowardoyo in two films; a short musical film based on the epic Mahabharata Drupadi; and 3 Dota Cinta, respectively; He was selected as a jury member of the Best Asian Film Festival in 2008, as well as as the French Film Ambassador for the 2009 French Film Festival in Indonesia. Chie Tanaka and he co-presenter the 2009 Asian Film Awards.

Saputra became a sportscaster for Malaysian television station TV3 in 2011. He appeared in Riri Riza's environmental documentary The Magic Kakaban that year. He appeared in two indies in 2012 and 2013, respectively; Edwin's Postcards from the Zoo, which had its premiere at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, and Mouly Surya's What They Don't Talk About When They Talk About Love as a deaf man who falls in love with a blind girl. The latter was the first Indonesian title to win a prize for World Cinematic Drama at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and it earned the NETPAC Award at the 2013 International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Saputra embarked on filmmaking for the first time as an executive producer alongside director Riri Riza in 2013. Sokola Rimba's story about activist Butet Manurung who instructs Orang Rimba people is told in a book based on a book with the same name. At the 2013 Maya Awards, it was named Best Film. Saputra co-founded production firm Tanakhir Films in Wamena that year, and he co-starred in his first film Cinta Dari Wamena, a story about an HIV/AIDS campaign in Wamena.

Saputra reunited with co-star Mariana Renata in a South Korean-Indonesian joint production film Someone's Wife in the Boat of Someone's Husband, part of Jeonju International Film Festival's Jeonju Digital Project, eight years after Janji Joni. The film was also on display at the Locarno Film Festival in 2013.

Saputra appeared in his first action film Pendekar Tongkat Emas in 2014, alongside Christine Hakim, where he played a mysterious warrior named Elang, which also involved elaborate combat sequences. In Ada Apa Dengan Cinta, he played Rangga for the first time. A spin-off of the 2002 original title that was released on YouTube in November 2014 is a 2014 one-episode drama. Saputra reunited for the third time with Mariana Renata in a web series Nic and Mar the following year. It was published in March 2015 and carried on Thursday and Friday by a cell phone, and it was a tale about rekindled couples.

Following Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?

Saputra revived the role of Rangga in Ada Dengan Cinta in 2014, with the exception of a 2014 success. 2, a film sequel that premiered in 2016. The film was critically acclaimed and became one of Indonesia's highest-grossing films. It has attracted more than a million viewers in Malaysia and Brunei. This was followed by Interchange, a Malaysian fantasy thriller that premiered at the 2016 Locarno International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.

In cooperation with the European Union Delegation to Indonesia, Saputra next co-produced, narrated, and appeared in Save Our Forest Giants, a short documentary film that raises concerns about elephant conservation in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Indonesia. In June 2016, the film was premiered at the French cultural center in Jakarta.

Saputra was elected as the jury member of the South-east Asian film maker competition in the 2nd HOOQ Filmmakers Guild in early 2018. He returned to acting in Aruna & Lidahnya as a chef in 2014, a film based on Laksmi Pamuntjak's "The Bird Woman's Palate," which earned him the Citra Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2018 Indonesian Film Festival. The film was shown in the 2019 Berlin Film Festival's Culinary Cinema Section and received the ABC Award at the 2019 Osaka Asian Film Festival. Saputra ended 2018 by leading all three omnibus episodes of Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2018: The Sea, Hekishu, and Variable No. 3; directed by Daichi Matsunaga, Indonesia's Edwin, and China's Degena Yun. The film was co-produced by the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Japan Foundation Asian Center, as part of the biannual Asian Three-Fold Mirror Project. On October 26, 2018, the film festival in Tokyo held its world premiere.

Saputra co-starred in the Filipino-Malaysian joint production horror film Motel Acacia the following year. In November 2019, the film made its world premiere at the 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival. "[c]harismatic Nicholas Saputra giving the best picture as a former accountant struggling to recover his ordeal in the cursed motel," Allan Hunter of Screen Daily wrote.

Saputra was chosen to become the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in November 2019. "I am honored that UNICEF in Indonesia has trusted me with this position," Saputra said about his appointment. Activism has always been my passion because I am concerned about this country's future. I believe we should start from the very beginning, making sure that Indonesian children's rights are respected so that we can create a happier world for children." He joined UNICEF in December 2019 to raise concerns about the urgent need to expand water and sanitation services, as well as basic hygiene practices. He also participated in the Leuser ecosystem foundation campaign to raise public interest about the ecosystem conservation in Mount Leuser National Park.

Saputra's production company, Tanakhir Films, produced their first feature documentary film Semesta (Islands of Faith), which tells the tale of seven Indonesian environmental campaigners. In November 2019, the film made its world premiere at the Suncine International Film Festival in Barcelona, a few years before the local debut in February 2020. At the 2020 Indonesian Film Festival, it was nominated for Best Feature Documentary. In August, 2020, Netflix unveiled it on Netflix.

Aquanus is expected to appear in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe next year, based on Wid N. S.'s comic book superhero character created in 1968. In November 2020, he was also cast in Riri Riza's forthcoming film Paranoia.
